According to LinkedIn and a few of my sources, James Bates left the show very early in the writing of Super Megaforce. James was brought in late to the development of Samurai after working for 13 years for Matt Groening, Nick, and Transformers. He was the Story Editor for Super Samurai, Megaforce and Super Megaforce. James worked on Clash of the Red Rangers, PRSS Episode 1 (Super Samurai), PRM Episode 1 (Mega Mission), and possibly PRSM Episode 1.

As mentioned in Marc Handler's interview, the Story Editor plays an important role in the process. James pushed for more originality rather than the standard translation of Shinkenger and Goseiger. If you liked Super Samurai and/or Megaforce, then James might be missed. :) At the moment, it's unknown whether he was replaced by the original Story Editor from Samurai Season 1 or if they found someone else.
