It smacks to me of a film school snob trying to tie his giant monster movie(and himself) to 2001 and Kubrick. Godzilla has a pretty great and iconic theme. Use that.

And the "meant for a limited audience" thing is bullshit. This "leak" and the takedowns are all part of the marketing.

Maybe if it was "just" a giant monster movie, I would agree. But it's not. It is much more. It's the KING of the monsters. And yes, he has an iconic theme. An iconic theme that is absolutely the wrong tone for that trailer.

Honestly, before you said it, I didn't even realise the music was there. It's really not that evident, and hardly the most iconic music of 2001 I remember.

Actually it's not. Apparently the reason it was exclusive and is being taken down is because the family of Robert Oppenheimer didn't approve of his quote being used.

Even though, you know, the quote perfectly encapsulates the story of Godzilla. Garreth Edwards has wanted to release it, and indeed may be the one behind it (he said he was the only one with the actual video)

It doesn't change the fact that.

1. It's not that noticable

2. It's not the most iconic musical piece in the movie (we all know what the most iconic piece is) And even if it was, who cares?

3. It doesn't matter. It's just music. Or I shouldn't say "just" music, but it was ultimately picked for the reason of "it fits the trailer." I don't get what the big problem is. Calling it "pretentious" and using the word "snob" quite frankly seems like a case of pot meets kettle. There's no reason to get up in arms about an excellent piece of music being used in a trailer for which it tonally fits perfectly.

That's what I thought, then I looked it up since I wasn't 100% sure. It is an early, limited look, nothing I said there is wrong. This was made way back before SDCC of 2012. However the reason for it's exclusitivity and getting taken down is because of the quote, evidently.

Yet funnily enough, it's apparently been up for two weeks before now, and only with the news of the November trailer was it discovered.

It's an old, rough trailer, made to be exclusively shown at SDCC. The reason it has remained exclusive is because of the family's disapproval over the quote use.

Seems straightforward to me.

All this conversation reminds me of is how the early Man of Steel trailers used LOTR music and were utterly freaking dumb because it's utterly dour, somber tone totally clashed with the quasi-inspiring and uplifting visuals and how it's the EXACT opposite of the case here.

I only hope Godzilla turns out to be a better movie.

Yes, it's the music that's repeated several times during the movie, during the most important scenes. IE the Monolith scenes and the Stargate. It's that piece of music. Unless you mean the waltz that's played during the spaceflight, which is a nice scene but not really that essential.

EDIT: Actually, I realized you meant Also sprach Zarathustra, which yes is more iconic. Though I did look back and I never said the Ligeti music was the most iconic in the film, so that's a bit of a strawman anyway. It's still iconic music in extremely famous scenes.

I don't understand why there's this contingent of people on this board who can't separate criticism of things they like, from criticism of themselves. I have not personally criticized you in any way. I did not even criticize the film. I criticized one aspect of this leaked trailer, yet you feel the need to personally attack me. Why? Are you unable to discuss things without doing that? By the way, yes, this is the long-coveted SDCC 2012 mood piece played during the Legendary panel and not an actual trailer for the film. Even its Godzilla isn't necessarily the one we'll see in the film, and double that for his deceased multi-limbed foe.

I also wouldn't hold my breath on those November trailer rumors. Comments by that damn fan site's Twitter seem to have been blown out of proportion, but November DOES mark Godzilla's birthday~.

But it looked just amazing. I know its short, but this is exactly I want from a high budget Godzilla movie, I really can't wait after Pacific Rim was so brilliant, my hopes are way, way up.
