I loved it so much, so for me, it's clearly "Excellent".
Objectively, it sure had a lot of flaws, which was mostly the stuff around Daigo (all the girls wanting him, him being a bit too perfect, etc.) and of course it did have some weaker episodes. But still, it was amazing how Riku Sanjo wrote this season ALL BY HIMSELF. The designs were funny and cool, the characters were loveable, the overall plot was good and the comedy was fun to watch. Kyoryuger may not be able to kick Goseiger from my number one favorite season-spot, but it's still close second. |
Where's the "Best Sentai Ever" choice? Because this is my favorite Sentai that I have ever watched. Granted I have only watched 4 fully through still this is amazing. All the characters are so amazing and fantastic including the villains. Everything made this show truly special to me. Also Souji is the best Green Ranger ever and my favorite Ranger ever. (Obviously judging by my username.)

It's usually easier to keep the plot coherent if you have just one writer or a small team that communicates a lot working on it. Bigger teams usually have major problems in keeping the writing uniform.
A single author usually has a better overview on his own story, he knows how his characters work and what he wants to achieve. |
It's no Go-Busters, but this show was pretty high up the list. It doesn't necessarily crack my top 5 list, but there are moments in this show that are truly memorable to me. While I know people didn't care for the Daigo does everything aspect, I just accepted it as the basic premise pretty early on and enjoyed it after that. I would say this is definitely an excellent show, and the open ending and forth coming 100 years after only increase my appreciation of this show.

Just "Alright."
The most apparent flaws of the series stemmed from central aspects: Daigo, the mech, and the villains. They reared their heads too often for me to just write off and the show suffered for it. But as it stands, I just think it's alright. A mediocre series that could've done worse, but simultaneously could have done a lot better. I'm not particularly excited for the upcoming movie, but I'll watch it...Some 6 months after it's released :p |
I originally posted this over in the KYORYUGER EPISODE 48 thread, but I feel like it's more appropriate here.
Well done, Kyoryuger. As a series who's mission was to take Sentai back to its roots after a couple of years of deviation, it couldn't have been more successful. Even though it was rarely groundbreaking, it cherry-picked successful elements from the past and lovingly created a self-aware sentai pastiche populated by likeable characters. There may have been a lot of elements that skewed too kiddie, and there may have been a lack of complexity among the bad guys -- but Kyoryuger's colorful, bombastic charm was instantly disarming. And it did something that few other Sentai series can claim: it managed to never be boring. I'd say the show's greatest strength was its cast. These guys cohered almost immediately, and their obvious, off-screen affection for each other contributed to a group dynamic that really sang. I don't know that I've seen a sentai cast with this much true chemistry, that has gelled quite so well. Saying the show's cast is its greatest strength may be slighting its action sequences, which were excellent as well. With so many brightly colored rangers running around, each with a very distinct fighting style, this show never lacked badassery. Even when the weekly plots dragged or annoyed, you could always count on some thrilling action. Say what you will about Koichi Sakamoto, his shows are always visually engaging. No, this show wasn't flawless. I agree with the criticism above that the conflicts between Ian & Aigaron and Utcchy & Dogold could have been mined for more material over the course of the show. I agree that sometimes it leaned a little juvenile. I agree that the villains didn't show much range. I don't think they had a very compelling motivation (or really any motivation) for wanting to destroy Earth. I think that the last 10 episodes struggled with obvious budget limitations. And, of course, there's Ovirapoo. But even still, Kyoryuger is a success. On a pure enjoyment level, it outperforms every series since the show transitioned to HD. I may ultimately prefer Gokaiger and its cast of devil-may-care sentai rebels, but I think Kyoryuger offers a more coherent and consistent experience. |
Kyoryuger is the second Sentai series that I just couldn't stand to sit through all the way. I actually made it further into Goseiger than this, but that was my first Sentai and I was trying to fill the gap left in my life by the essential cancellation of Power Rangers post-RPM. Objectively, I do think Kyoryuger was better than Goseiger (as are most forms of norovirus, to be fair); I've just seen enough Sentai now that I'm less patient when I think it's bad.
Now obviously I can't speak for the entire series as I only made it to episode 10, but I can discuss what I didn't like about it (and one of the big ones apparently was still an issue up to the finale). First and foremost, I don't think Riku Sanjo should write Sentai again. I like Sanjo a lot; the Rider shows he worked on were fun and I can't necessarily blame Fourze's shortcomings on him since he was just the assistant writer there. But if there's one thing that Kyoryuger has made clear, it's that he's still in a mode where the show has THE HERO and his support staff. I don't know if there has ever been a PR or Sentai that's so red-centric; not even Power Ranger Nickstic Force. Galvantula hit the nail on the head: Daigo is a total Mary Sue and everyone on the show bent over backwards to validate him for it. The Kyoryu Gray arc was the nail in the show's coffin for me: we had a chance for Daigo to show real vulnerability and to find something that he wasn't the best at. But nope; his only flaw was being "too perfect" and he overcame it by waiving it off with some "teamwork" bullshit. And what really sucked about the Daigo focus is that the show had some characters with a lot of potential. Ian, in particular, was being built up as a return to the Black Condor style of antagonistic team member. But he pretty much fell into line with all the rest after a couple episodes and his background arc about losing a mysterious jewel? Yeah, Daigo's wearing it as a necklace. Could I have gotten through all of that? Maybe, but the other thing that killed the show for me was that I found it aesthetically off-putting on every level. Everything was just so cartoony and childish: the monsters, the mecha, the dancing, and especially the incredibly stupid special attacks. Inflating like a balloon was dumb enough, but the fart gun... ugh. And the sound... oh dear god, the unending onslaught of loud, glaring, obnoxious sounds. If it's not the gun voice screaming at the top of its high-pitched lungs, it's the minutes of extended tweeting and blaring of the mech combinations. The nice thing about subtitles is that you can watch the show without audio, but before Kyoryuger I never wanted to actually do that. I forget who said this recently (I think it was Locke or Matrixbeast), but Kyoryuger is a show for five-year-olds. Yes, Sentai usually aims for a younger audience, but usually it seems like there's something in there for older viewers. Kyoryuger gave me nothing that felt like it was even trying to entertain someone who could tie their own shoelaces. It had a lot of potential, but it was too busy burying its nose in Daigo's rectum and screaming at the top of its lungs to take advantage of it. tl;dr version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JNuqEz_GCQ |
Switchblade's comments hit the nail on the head for me. I only made it a few episodes into Kyoryuger myself, for all the reasons outlined above. I'm glad to know I wasn't the only person who felt like this about the show.
