We know the Megaforce is Goseiger, and since Goseiger is a much better match to the origins in terms of colour than Gokaiger it wouldn't be that farfetched an idea to have them be the ones to turn into past rangers. The tensouder already uses cards as a means of power, so the ranger keys could easily be turned into ranger cards. Bandai dumbing things down isn't a new thing, and I can imagine blindpacks of cards would be easier to market in bulk than ranger key sets (unless they blindpacked those, but that's a whole different story).

What if at the end of the "1st Season", they lose to the Warstars? Forced to leave the Earth in shame, they travel to "some planet" where they learn that they need not follow the rules of "Heroism", and with that are granted the new "Super" (Gokai) powers. This way, they aren't bound by the laws (based on the original MMPR) that, will probably, be instilled in them like: "Don't attack first, only defend" and the like...

This is a great idea, which inspired my own idea of what should take place if I was in charge of the story :D. Admittedly, it's not the most original, but here it is:

1) Megaforce Rangers are the primary Rangers, like OmniKhaos said, they lose the war against the enemy.

2) Taking cues from In Space, one Megaforce Ranger is knocked off the team and the rest are forced into working with a lone space pirate who will be the newest Red Ranger. With the help of the space pirate they seek the ultimate power to defeat the enemy once and for all, thus forming the Super Megaforce (Gokaiger). The ultimate power possibly requires a path of heroism, as OmniKhaos suggested.

3) They will have adventures aboard the Gokai Galleon Ã* la Power Rangers In Space.

4) For the Ranger to be knocked off, I suggest the Red Megaforce Ranger, Troy, who would be presumed dead or missing. He would later return as the Gokai Silver character. Thus he can retain a main character spot while sharing the spotlight with the newer Red Ranger.

5) Transforming into past Rangers could take place in Super Megaforce to be more climatic. We are introduced to veterans and previous teams in Megaforce, but they and the Megaforce Rangers are overwhelmed in the Legendary War. To preserve their powers in the face of a terrifying, unbeatable enemy, they condense all their powers into keys that could be used by the Super Megaforce team. Note that this would conveniently include the Megaforce powers, so this would excuse a change in costume WITHOUT simply throwing away all that was accomplished in Megaforce.
