I never loved anime.
I loved certain shows and series, but I never watched a show just because it was an anime.
That was where a lot of contention rose between my otaku friends and I, whereas they treated Anime as an infallible medium with poor series being rare and I was far, far more critical.

And Death Note is stupid. I could never see why it was so praised.

I used to love anime. Then moe became a thing.
I also describe it as the moment that the art style shifted from females always looking older than they were supposed to be to always looking younger.

Anime is just plain creepy these days.

Well the manga was great and the show itself was a fantastic and faithful representation of it. It's just a good interesting dark story.

I also watched Inuyasha for years. Up until the "ending" where they half-assed it and quit well before the actual ending of the manga. I never came back for the OVA but I've seen the original 6 (or is it7?) seasons and all the movies. I enjoyed it alot, I don't know that I could set back and watch it all again but I do have fond memories of that show.

there are too many patterns...from the love triangles, the fighting tournemants to the mecha/armor upgrades...hell I love gundam, and it is always fight in space, reluctant hero, then re-entry, learn a lesson on earth, upgrade mech, then go to space with a new resolve to end the war...Gurren Lagan was the last really good anime I have seen...and I'm an OLD school fan...

I think it's fair to say I'm not a big anime guy. There've been shows and movie I've watched that I loved, but I'm not the kind of guy who keeps up with all the new stuff and has opinions for every moe shovelware series* that comes out. I love, and I mean LOVE super robots specifically, but that's almost a different beast from other shounen, at least from what I've seen.

On the subject of long series, I've only watched one: GaoGaiGar, which is 49 episodes and a six episode OVA. Now, I love the shit out of GaoGaiGar, but I can see how people could find it and other episodes of its type and length to be too drawn out. The main advantage I see to it is that when you spend that much time with the characters, you feel more attached to them when crazy shit starts happening. GaoGaiGar is supposed to take place over a whole year, and thanks to it being 49 episodes, it feels like it, meaning that when the shit hits the fan, it feels that much bigger. Now, I can also see how it could just be drawn out for no good reason, especially with manga, which from what I've seen, has a tendency to just be SPLASH PAGE SPLASH PAGE SPLASH PAGE story SPLASH PAGE SPLASH PAGE SPLASH PAGE SPLASH PAGE.

And again, I'm dead serious when I say that if you're all hating on anime OR have even the slightest modicum of interest in it, but haven't seen any Miyazaki movies, you need to fix what's wrong with your life and watch some. Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, and Castle in the Sky are all great places to start.

You see, I was a huge Ranma 1/2 fan as I got into anime.. so I knew Rumiko Takahashi's problem with serial comics, never developing characters/relationships, and endings that don't tie things up. At least Inuyasha has a real ending..
True story, I watched the first 50-100 episodes of the anime, then skipped to the last several chapters of the manga years later to see how the series ended and found out that I missed absolutely nothing of importance by skipping about half of the series.

Death Note was alright. The anime came out around the same time as Code Geass season 1 so there were too interesting shows with anti-heroes to contrast against each other. The thing with Death Note is it relied too heavily on contrivance and coincidental circumstance.. and drug on too long. Code Geass had a fallible anti-hero protagonist but then fell too heavily into mecha merchandising and pulled a Gundam SEED Destiny where the second season tried too hard to pander to the fans and sucked

Here, here. Gurren Lagan is the latest anime in my top 5 favorites. I enjoyed Macross Frontier as well before I stopped watching anime altogether, but it could not surpass Macross Plus.

I think only late 80s to 90s anime like Slam Dunk, GTO, Tomorrow's Joe, Dragonball -Dragonball GT, Doremon interest me...and some super robot related shows likw Gurren Laggann, Getter, and etc. I just cant stand shows where it all depress, dark/evil or when the main character narrate his/her life at the beginning of every episode...

What part did you like best? The part where they broke the magic crystal and had to gather its shards, the part where they broke the magic crystal again and had to gather its shards, or the part where they broke the magic crystal yet a-fucking-gain and had to gather its shards? :p

But hey, I should be fair. At least each story arc had the exact same villain. :p

I can totally understand the hate for most anime. I'm certainly not a fan of the medium when it takes itself seriously. Shows like Death Note, NGE, and Cowboy BeBop do nothing for me. I do, however, absolutely adore anime when it just lets loose. Namely, slice-of-life schoolgirl comedies. There's this charm about them that I can't get from other shows. There are a few serious anime shows that I do love, but that's due to them being romance stories, which I'm just a weakling for. Especially Toradora. I would watch that if anyone here hasn't.
