I don't think going back to a more standard Sentai is what makes it kind of middling, it's doesn't really stand next to the best of those. I think the most interesting aspect is the spy/espionage stuff and while arguably it's more about that than cars even, I still wish it'd lean into it more.

Still, I like it enough and watched it long enough that I might as well stick with it and see where it goes. I just hope Gozyuger kick things up a notch once more.

Eh, it's pretty much familiar comfort food compared to the fine dining that was King-Ohger, which is why I think it works for me. It treads familiar grounds and takes somewhat of a back-to-basics approach to reset the gears so that the next one may shine. Pretty much. It's futile to try comparing Boonboomger to the 3 shows that preceded it, but being considered a more conventional Sentai, we can totally compare it to Kiramager, which I personally think is just better at virtually everything it does. I wonder if Toei are afraid to invest too much in agents and espionage themes, due to Gobusters becoming a financial failure.
