Kamen Rider has always had mature themes its just now with recent shows like Wizard and Fourze buried under Super kid friendly appearance and introducing new forms or weapons every 2 episodes because toy sales.
Wizard has themes of Hope, despair, people's dreams, loss, beings within us. Its just they convey it through flashy magic and Shunpei |

New words will be added annually. Going back to the showa series they have MOTW which required blood transfusion. They captured girls, put them on the table, and have a tube or straw to "suck" the blood off from the captive's body. Also using foam to show the melting of victims. Over all show is light-hearted, but the feel of it is still pretty dark. |
It kind of threw me off as well, even the American adaptation Dragon Knight was built around the horrors of war and death and what have you and that was after you processed it through the soccer mom filter.
You go to the originals and you have like dead kids, themes of suicide, depression, genocide. I mean modern series are a lot more kid friendly but you watch something like Kuuga and it's darker and bleaker than a lot of movies made for adults. |

Yeah, Japan can get away with so much more than America or Europe can. Think NGE. As far as I know, this was first marketed as a kid's show. Yeah... [Cue me being proved wrong] |
