Since I started watching when it was off the air through whatever VHS' I could find I never really had a first Doctor so it took me a while to find a favourite. As a child it was McCoy, but now I'd definitely say Pertwee. Even though the majority of his stories are Earth-bound, I really his straight scientist/man of action approach to the character.

If any of you have BBC America you can tune in tonight to see a special tribute to Pat Troughton, followed by the airing of one of his adventures. I'm assuming it will be Tomb of the Cybermen, but last month's Hartnell episode - which is being reaired this afternoon, btw - was freaking The Aztecs, so I have no idea what BBCA's selection process is.

I'm rewatching the Hartnell overview special right now and yeah, tonight's Troughton episode is going to be Tomb of the Cybermen. |
Considering Doctor Who almost certainly wouldn't be here today without The Daleks I'm suprised it wasn't that. Despite it being the obvious choice the stories that come even close to being that important are few and far between.

Then yes, The Dalek Invasion of Earth should have been the next logical choice. |

Not sure how many of you guys have ever listened to the Big Finish audio adventures (and if you haven't you really should), but I just finished up my Dalek Time Controller custom and thought I'd share :D

Because it's the 50th aniversary, I've decided to watch all the new episodes of Doctor Who, plus any old ones I have lying around. The only ones I'm going over are 'The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances' and 'Planet of the Ood'- they scare the **** out of me. Please don't try to get ahead of me and post your own reviews the way I do-you can still watch the episodes. I plan to do episodes a week, but to finish Series 1 before 30th March. So, on with the first review!!
S1,E1: Rose - Broadcast 26/3/05 The first episode of the rebooted series, it starts of like Eastenders. Then we get movin shop dummies, a man with a bomb, and an explosion. Then you know Doctor Who is back. Plot A young woman, Rose, stumbles upon moving shop dummies, and is rescued by a man calling himself 'The Doctor'. He explodes her job, and gets her tangled up in his messy, monster-fighting life, then, after some exposition, a shiny Mickey, and some running, they blow up a blob of CGI. It goes quite fast, but the bits with Clive, a fanatic who tracks the Doctor through time, feel slow. The appearance of the Autons is good, and it ties it in with the old series, which helps make sure people know it still links to that. 8/10 Characters The characters are well laid out. The Doctor has gone from an enigmatic old-man-type person to a northern, angry man. Rose is shown as a person who seeks variety in her dull, monotonous life. Jackie is shown to care about her daughter, and the Nestene Conciousness is shown to be a smart blob! 7/10 Scare Factor Not a lot in this episode. There's the bit where the Autons move for the first time, and there's the massacre in the shoping centre. Good, but not great. 6/10 Overall This works as a series opener, and it introduces us to all the concepts of the new series that we need to know-New TARDIS, new Sonic, new Doctor. This episode is really worth a rewatch. 8/10 |
What is with the nicknames of his current Companions? The Girl Who Waited, The Centaurion, The Twice Dead Girl. I really hope this isn't an on-going thing. It's fine, just it wears out quick.

Good idea with the reviews AkibaSilver, keeps this thread going. It would be interesting to see your points of view.
I don't have much to say about Rose as an episode, but it was a decent beginning, I guess. I didn't warm up to Rose as a companion until many episodes later. Quote:

By the way, which era of Doctor Who did you like, Sentai? |

Tom Baker, My first Doctor. |

How does he whine? He's the strongest willed character on the show. |

Come on, justify your accusation against Rory or stop talking nonsense. Others would use ruder language than I. |

Also, how does being constant "fodder for villains" make him whiny? It has nothing to do with whininess. Every single one of Rory's protests in the entire series was a legitimate protest, and he doesn't even protest that much. He has constantly shown that he was willing to give the benefit of the doubt to Amy and to his friends in general. |
