I don't know about smelly food, but NOISY food. Just open the damn bag before the show starts, stop trying to do it quietly during the show because we can hear you inching the damn thing open.

Yeah, people can think Transformers sucks and compare that to parallels for Pacific Rim, but those are closed minded people. Much like the people who insult our fandom because we have grown ups in brightly colored spandex fighting rubber monsters while their own genre also has grown ups in brightly colored spandex fighting occasional rubber monsters or you know, giant clouds, which is even worse. Or fighting other grown ups in brightly colored spandex but all the while it's okay because they wear their underwear outside of their costumes. Quote:
There's just no real place for giant robots that don't transform in Western culture though, as sad as it is. |
As someone who grew up with 80's action movies I can tell you the Transformers movies are terrible examples of popcorn entertainment.

That doesn't make every movie excusable. |
Yeah but leaving your brain at the door is kind of the point of the multiplex, yeah you can complain, but cerebral, intellectually stimulating films just don't sell on the same scale as something like Transformers and maybe the world would be a better place otherwise, but these places only exist to make money.
If you want thought provoking cinema, don't go to your multiplex go to your art house theatre. |
I'm not saying I can't enjoy a popcorn flick or that they can't be fun. It's why I liked Amazing Spider-Man and the Godzilla franchise as a whole.
I'm just saying that it doesn't make every movie worth watching. |

I just wish I could see this movie already so I can form my OWN opinion of it instead of listening to what all these other people whom I don't care about affect my excitement for better or worse.
I still wish movies just came out on Blu-ray/DVD. Theatres and pre-screenings and critic reviews and all this just gets in the way of the movie itself. |

Especially if you want people outside our fandom to actually like or enjoy this. So far, I've seen people in our fandom going because it's "giant robots" and to support that. There's no real reason for people who aren't in our fandom to see it otherwise. Hell, I'm not even interested in seeing it. |

The only thing people need to leave at the door is their cynicism and screaming kids so that we can watch the movie in freaking peace. |

Reading this makes me sad. I don't think the mecha genre will ever really catch on in the States due to predustice, pure and simple.

The international box office is harder to predict but can be an even greater source in most cases.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/inte...tors-laud-film With folks like Hideo Kojima and Go Nagai offering Del Toro their support, I think Pacific Rim has a fighting chance. |

Guys, I've seen this movie. Its a good movie. Its a fun movie. The characters have depth well at least for the crews of the Gipsy Danger and Striker Eureka.
The battles are epic albeit they either take place in the night or in dark settings. You see what is happening and the action is clear but I think this was simpler way of The overall plot is...kinda cliche but hey, it works. Del Toro gets it. He sets rules within the world that he created and stuck to them as best as he could without any ass-pull moments. And he does "build" a world. He explains through Hunnam how the world reacts to the Kaiju threat, how it's shaped its culture and the politics of the world under threat. Its not as in depth as one might want it to be, we might see more exploration in other media like games/comics/novels. It's better than what I expected going in. There are a few annoyances. The "Kaiju Expert" doctor for example was an annoying character but he served a couple of purposes. Hannibal Chau had a lot more to his character than what was revealed. Again, he can be explored in other media. And the ending was....Well, to me it should have been a little more symbolic. But I guess the world of Pacific Rim needed a happy ending badly. Yo ljacone, there's a shout out to the fans of old badly dubbed kaiju movies in the film. Look for it at the scene where Maki and Raleigh are introduced for the first time. I thought it was a sound synching problem at first then it hit me. I was the only one chuckling after that. |
Rottentomatoes.com has it right now at 77%,and honestly that's where I figured it would be.A fun movie, but no blockbuster.
|
I've watched the movie, it was excellent! Definitely the best giant robot movie (not that there's much competition, but it beats the Transformers movies) and was actually better than I expected. Have fun guys!
|
Just gone done watching it in imax 3d and I gta say, ignore the reviews.ignore the rumors.its a damn good movie

I just noticed this thread today, and I find it incredulous that people are predicting it to fail even before the movie opens, I'm doing my part to see this movie, more than once. From a guy that knows everything there is to know about the story, I can't wait to see it unfold before my eyes. Now go do your part and cancel the apocalypse! P.S. It already has been green lit for movie 2 (development wise) |
For all those saying Pacific Rim would tank due to Grown Ups 2,I'll just leave this here.

This movie doesn't interest me. I'm not saying I won't see it eventually, but I'm just not that excited for it. Quote:
EDIT: I've never said this movie would fail either, but what I did say was I'd rather see Grown Ups 2 or the Lone Ranger over Pacific Rim. Of course, my intellectual value was questioned because "hey, giant robots fighting homages of people in giant rubber monster suits is thought provoking and deep." |
Admittedly it is quite a bit more thought provoking than Grown Ups 2. And thankfully there's no Adam Sandler in Pacific Rim :p
|

Adam Sandler would probably draw in a crowd based solely on that. |

The whole "Do your part and cancel the apocalypse" thing is derived from the movie, which is what that statement's for, you go see whatever movie you want to, its your hard-earned money. |

I know all this stuff isn't taught in schools or whatever and I guess it's hard to wrap your head around, in the way a lot of the world is when you're a kid, but the over privileged ignorance in this thread at times is astounding. |
if pacific rim becomes a dredd 2.0 becaues of marketing, I'm gonna be so pissed you have no idea
I want to see it so badly but work is keeping me from doing it, because of my schedule i doubt i'll see it till tuesday or wednesday and it hurts me |
I will say one thing,it is very cliche and cheesy. But the fight scenes make you totally not care about it at all.The acting, even though most called it bad,is extremely good. They picked the actors perfectly.

I get where you're coming from though. I don't think Steve Carrel is funny at all, and he keeps getting work too. Quote:
The issue I have in this thread is that some of you are acting like because people don't want to see Pacific Rim or choose a different film over it, that suddenly those people have no "taste" or "intellect" and it's insulting. Besides, they're two different friggin' genres. Some people just want to laugh. I hardly see an issue with that. If everyone agreed and liked the same thing, what's the point of a forum for discussion in the first place? |
Daikaiju is a genre, just because you like tokusatsu movies or shows doesn't mean one automatically likes daikaiju movies or shows.
I think it is the duty of daikaiju fans to go see this movie, not tokusatsu fans in general! :D |

It was such a good movie, but unfortunately like someone said above, good and successful movies are two different things. Grown Ups 2, while a horrible movie, will do better. I hope that's not the case, but it most likely will be.
If you're interested in Pacific Rim at all, then go see it! It's SO good. |
