And it's pretty clear Superman is OP as hell. There's a specific reason why Goku was constantly downplayed and made to seem weaker in light of the current threat. That was so he could still play up the underdog theme he had since the original Dragonball. In the eyes of the fans, Goku was the ultimate lifeform, but in the eyes of Akira Toriyama, Goku was the underdog who needed to struggle and overcome the odds to win in the end.
Superman, however, was never presented as such. DC knew Superman could sneeze and wipeout a solar system, and played things as such. Superman has always been the strongest character. Not the Hulk, not the Sentry, not even Goku can hold a candle to him.
That's why people face palm at attempts to make him relatable to the viewer.

My brother argued that Goku could generate kryptonite and said that the battle provided an inaccurate depiction of Goku's fighting ability. My response… well, let's just say that my brother is the polar opposite of Applejack.

I think there's a story there. A man wielding that much power has to deal with the responsibilities of that power. In the right hands, you could have a magnificent story come out of that. It might be because I have low standards, but I think Man of Steel did a good job of portraying that when it was portraying it.
