Just finished the first ep and it throws everything at you wayyyyyy too fast.It felt like they immediately went from eating breakfast to becoming the Magirangers. It was like every character had one line and you're supposed to understand who they are.
I don't want to compare it to Mystic Force, but I got a good idea of who the characters were in the first ep of that alone. And their not-Ranger uniforms are way better. This doesn't mean I don't like the show.I'm more than willing to stay in this for the long haul. |

Episode 1
Pacing? What is this "pacing" you speak of? :p Yeah, that was really rushed. "Hey kids, magic exists, here's your weapons, go fight, kthxbai!" Way to get your children murdered, lady. Is it me, or is the audio synch off on this episode? Not sure if that's the show's fault or TVN's. I assume the latter since this is one of their older projects using TV rips. And thanks for not translating some of those words with no English counterparts like "mom" and "brothers." :rolleyes No real sense of the characters beyond basic archetypes so far. Kai looks like he may get kind of annoying, but probably not Jan-tier obnoxious. Hope the special effects get better, as the green screen stuff here is really bad. I've seen worse, but that bit with Kai falling off the pole was still awful. I will probably never watch the end credits again. The song isn't Zyuranger ending bad, but it ain't good. Also, this is the lamest dancing I've ever seen in a Sentai's end credits. Villains are pretty badass. I forgot how cool those mooks are. Always loved the Wolzard suit, too. Houka really, really isn't Vida, is she? :( Episode 2 Man, the monster designs for this show are great. Man, the effects for Houka's shapechanging are shit. I'm liking the action so far, although I could do with less sibling squabbling. Pacing is still kinda rocky. Your mom died like two hours ago and you're already back to joking around with your little brother? What the hell, heroes? "N Ma" is a really cool name. Nai and Mare look pretty fun, but, again, I could do with less of the Shrapnel verbal tic. Tic. But if a show wants me to like it, it really can't go wrong with hot goth chicks. Chicks. Soccer ball attack. Very Gorenger/Kakuranger. I dig it. Little plant puppet I am going to hate you. |
Houka is my favourite Magiranger. :o
|
She's my favorite so far as well. I guess it's her bubbily laziness :lol
|
I don't think I'll like Houka. Vida is one of my favorite Power Rangers of all time and Houka is pretty much her polar opposite, despite using the same footage.
|
If any of them annoy me so far, it's Tsubasa. While Houka's laziness is funny, his is freaking annoying, considering he has a bit of arrogance/cowardliness to it, which is the complete opposite of Chip.

Since the series isn't on Youtube, I guess I'll have to read off the comments or, miss another Lets watch Wednesdays.
|
It's weird seeing people comparing it to Mystic Force. I guess if we're doing Mystic Force now people will think it's weird I'm comparing to Magiranger. :lol

I think I like everyone honestly. Kai's voice is about the only annoyance. Tsubasa gets a pass because years from now he'll also be Jin Masato. So I can't hate anything that he does :lol

Originally, I wasn't as big a fan of Makito compared to the others. Still my least favourite, or tied with Urara anyway. Anyhow I like them all decently enough.

Or Spielberg getting a pass on AI for making Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark. |

Jin/Tsubasa always gets a free pass in my book :D

Watched Episode One. And yea. I think I found something I don't like :lol It wasn't bad, the team just takes getting used to. The VA's though are spot on, especially Necrolai's.
|
I like how Kai obtain his powers.
I never like that talking plant, the plant is pretty annoying. It was kind of funny when it decided to sing a song before it wanted to explain the Magitopia to the Magirangers. |
I'm liking Makito, just cause he keeps the group together in a special way. That and MagiTaurus was always my favorite in Mystic Force, even more so now.
|
I had no idea they replaced Vancuria in Mystic Force, good to know though! And considering what Disney was doing to Power Rangers at the time, unsurprising. Well unsurprising regardless really, considering its a kids show, and some fishnets are the only thing holding her boobs in place.
In terms of characters, I've watched two episodes, and the fanfic like pacing of the show has meant I don't know anyone. I know Kai, because he is the Red, and everyone shouted his name like fifty times a minute. Kai is like a horrifically watered down Alata, even though he came first. Then we got yellow - an antagonist douche, how did this become Chip? Green, the stoic badass, why did this become Xander? Pink, changes into random shit in one of the cheapest special effects I've seen in the entire franchise. And then Blue, that one exists. |
I literally just finished Magiranger tonight. Oh well, one day Ill join in on this "Lets Watch Wednesday" thing. I haven't seen Mystic Force, don't have any desire to now either, Magiranger is a LOT of fun!
|
Mystic Force is pretty good, I know the show has its problems, but it's always been a season I've really liked overall. I've been checking bits out on Youtube, to see how they stack up next to how things play out in the Sentai, and they hold up well.
It was also the Disney days, where they followed the plot beats of the sentai, but would actually spend money on making the seasons unique as well. So Mystic Force is worth your time, even if you've just seen Magiranger, as it takes it in some starkly different directions. |
Well I suppose I can check into it at some point then. Magiranger surprised me so I hope everyone else enjoys it!
|
Eps 2 and 3 are much better.MagiMother got it bad,I was hoping she was gonna stick around to at least mentor them in some way,but I guess that's what Mandora Boy is for.Who I'm suprisingly liking, when I saw him for the first time I was straight up creeped out by the way he looked. After seeing him here,he isn't so bad.
Even though I've seen how they worked in Mystic Force, the Majin are still so cool to me.I love it when they actually give the individual mecha the spotlight before immediately combining. What's the point of having individual mecha if their only tactical purpose is the combination? That being said though,I'm ready for MagiKing and I wish my SRC wasn't broken so I can enjoy that design in my hands. :cry |

That was a fun trip down memory lane. Seeing these early episodes it's interesting to see how the characters were early on vs how they how they are at the end of the series. Also knowing how later plot points turn out, I catch the key moments in these early episodes.

EPISODE TWO
Looking like more of the world is being developed, and I like what I see. This show is wearing its Harry Potter references on its sleeve. The music, the secret Hogwarts-hideout, the living paintings, the use of silly sneezing powder to defeat troll-monsters. It's so close that henceforth, in my head, this series takes place in the same universe as HP. Magiranger vs Infersia is what's going on in Japan while Harry Potter's off fighting Voldemort in England. Don't even try to challenge me! Stray Thoughts: - Dead mom is a great motivation for the team. Shame that MagiMother's actress is out of the picture -- I liked her. - Tsubasa's so sensitive! His prickliness and arrogance are defense mechanisms, I guess? - Magi Magi Magiiro is such a lame henshin call. - The broom bikes are even more badass than I expected. Please tell me they keep using them as much as they did in this episode. - Hades Beasts! Bat-Boob Lady! Nai and Mare! I'm totally sold on these bad guys. - Oh, wow! They actually henshin into their mecha? Has Sentai ever done that before? Humanoid individual robots are my favorite, and these suckers are mighty cool-looking. I also love that Taurus is so much bigger than the rest -- really cool sense of scale with these guys. - "Courage will teach you the magic." Flimsy, but I'll buy it. - The girls on this show are pretty blank. Are they ever developed into real characters. - Damn, TV-Nihon's translations are particularly annoying this series. Tsu-nii-tachi? Really? Definitely enjoying the show more and more. |
Stage 03.
It actually woulda been better if Kai joined the series a little later, I think. I actually really like the idea of an older brother jealous that he is now being bossed around by his youngest brother, and when the MagiRangers went out the first time he automatically took the leader role and his siblings naturally fell in step. It was a nice subtle touch, that didn't need to be spelt out, to be appreciated but now they're actually making a "thing" of it. It would have been nice to have had Green lead the team for a while, even if it was off screen before the series began or something. Because in this incarnation, it just makes Kai look like a brat, which a Red should never be and Green look like a control freak, so you can't really side with him either. Also, it's a secret, MagiBlue says, while transforming right in front of a little kid? Is she retarded or..? Overall - I'm not impressed. I didn't all out hate the three episodes, the MagiMajins were epic, and the villains are really cool as well but the comedy fails, the characters weak and the action unimpressive. I might tune in next week, but it's no better, I might just give another LWW a miss. |
Just managed to finish the first two episodes for now and I'm reminded of all the things I liked about Magiranger. The best thing about Magiranger is the whole look of the show: the costumes, the wardrobe, the monsters, the mecha, everything is excellent.
The music is also some of the best Super Sentai has had, and I love it. Some may say that the individual character development is not as strong as other Sentai seasons and to an extent I agree. But that's because I believe Magiranger focuses on developing the family as a whole rather than each individual sibling. This will become more apparent in later episodes as their familial ties are emphasized more than their individualities and nobody really stands out. It's quite interesting, actually. |
This was a great beginning to to Magiranger. I'll keep watching (I was going to watch Majiranger at some point anyway since I finished Dekaranger a while back).
|
I'm watching episode 3 right now.
Mandora Boy is singing. I want to punch somebody. |
Finished episode one and umm. Yeah I really liked the music, the suits, fights, it just felt different than let's say Kypryuger, just I liked it.
|
Good action in episode 3, although that trapeze thing was really weird. But it was weird in a Kakuranger kind of way, so I can dig it.
Makito's actor is kind of awful. I really hope the show's CGI budget runs out soon, just so they stop trying. Mandora Boy is the worst thing ever, desu. |
my second go through of this and it is still fun to see. I love the family aspect of this and how things get shaken up by the youngest becoming the leader. a loss this soon is definitely a curveball. wolzard is such a cool design and a mysterious dark knight. mandora boy is so adorable don't ya know hehe. Vancuria, all I can say about her is DROOL. the fact that she is two goth Lolita's is cool, something not seen in mystic force. the design of the main general guy at this time, sorry forgot name, is a cool menacing mechanized steam look.
|
The start of Magiranger felt rather erratic and sudden, I liked the ideas at play but imo a 3-parter start would have probably made for a better pace than a 2-parter, just so things wouldn't feel so rushed.
Nonetheless this first batch of episodes did leave me wanting for more, so that's good. While talking about characters so early in the show is probably pointless, so far I like Tusbasa and Houka, don't care much about Green and Blue, and Kai quite sincerely drives me nuts, but at the very least the show recongnizes his flaw so his development may turn out very interesting. Oh and that ending song is way too catchy, love it. |
My first let's watch is my favorite sentai!!
Episode 1: I actually didn't watch this episode now because I watched it so recently heh. So I don't remember if the opening is in the first episode or not. But either way, I love the lyrics, and in fact want a line of it tattooed on me somewhere (yuuki to iu na no mahou wo motteru). I don't know why it speaks to me so much, maybe because I'm shy. Onto the episode - for the first episode of a series I thought it was okay. I thought the bit with Kai saving the boy's balloon was a bit unnecessary but I guess you have to show the good guys being good guys? Magi Mama is so lovely <3 I like that she felt Kai wasn't ready. I also like that all the members of the Ozu family are at different points in their lives and have different goals. This makes their character-centric episodes all the more wonderful. I love the henshin/roll call poses, Pink's is definitely my favorite. The ending! The chorus is my favorite bit but I love it all. I actually learned the whole dance a while ago! I should film it lol. Episode 2: Magi Mama says something a little foreshadowing, methinks. Oh, and I love the fact they actually, you know, have her killed. Definitely did not do that in Mystic Force (one of the many reason Mystic Force irks me...but that's a discussion for later). Of course, I love love love Nai and Mare and their cute outfits and pun names and their sexy morph. I like the Majin (I'm sorry these are all me saying "I like this, I like that" lol) especially Magi Fairy and Magi Mermaid. And they're all drastically different sizes! If you can't tell, I love sentai where things are very different from one another, haha. Episode 3: This episode, along with other Makito episodes, just solidifies him as my favorite character and Kai and my second least favorite. I love how Makito wants to lead them all and protect them in his mother's stead, and it irks me how selfish Kai can be. But then again, I believe Kai is like 16, so, I guess he;s at that age where kids act like that from time to time. So, Mandraboy. He's a little annoying, but not as annoying as...a certain character that comes later. But I do like the little song he sings. I know how Makito feels, I've always been the one no one listens to and "brings up the rear." The little bit with Urara and the little boy was unnecessary but cute. Makito ate the stem when he ate the strawberry...So, Kai isn't going to ask how the others knew how to henshin into Magi Dragon? Oh, okay. Overall, these three episodes aren't the best of Magiranger, but they are a strong start and definitely show this is a sentai where family and courage are important. |
