Well, they certainly communicated everything I need to know about that movie. The designs, the lighting... Especially the lighting. They're okay at best, but... yeah, no, I can't dig it. Maybe they'll look better in motion and proper, you know, daylight, but right now I think this sums up everything we've seen so far fairly adequately:

ALSO -- looks like there won't be any cool martial arts action in this movie because there's no way an actor can move gracefully in those suits.

I just went they went with a suit closer to, say, Ant-Man, which allowed for a lot of fast and flowing movements. |
I was behind Rita's new look, but this just makes them all too similar (I don't give a crap if their suits may come from the same alien compound or what have you, I still think they're ill fitting). What I think works aesthetically in Super Sentai, as well as Kamen Rider, Ultraman, and other tokusatsu series which are the real inspiration behind all of this, is the contrast of designs between heroes and villains. The suits of heroes are typically more refined, easier on the eyes. The villains (kaijin) by contrast are akin to traditional kaiju–rugged, cornucopias of texture. If they want to create tokusatsu for a more mature audience, something Americans can appreciate, why not revisit a tokustatsu that was made for a more mature audience to begin with? These Power Rangers sport "an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made." That sounds awfully familiar...

Someone watched too much Guyver.
When will anyone in Hollyweird learn that when you make superheroes, less is more? They could have easily gone with a mesh or carbon styled suit without the Green Lantern, Iron Man, CGIed vibe these are going with. I just don't like them. Becky G you had one job. These just look like Project Runway Superhero rejects. It doesn't matter if the belt is spraying itself all over them (which sounds as bad as I just typed), it still means the only thing they homaged was the helmets. Everything else about the suits is not. Whatever. As long as the actors can act, EB doesnt act like Effie Trinket, and the script doesn't completely blow, I can put up with Trons Kids. |

But the larger question is: why would they design suits in which martial arts are impossible to perform when martial arts is a fundamental part of Power Rangers' identity? There is literally zero joy in watching CGI figures use martial arts. The whole beauty of martial arts is that real people are performing seemingly impossible physical movements. That is all stripped away when the figures are made out of liquid pixels. I was really hoping this movie would make me like Power Rangers for the first time since I was in elementary school, but it's looking increasingly like that won't happen. |

They look awful, but mostly because of the helmets. They're really, really weirdly proportioned and look too similar aside from the red ranger's. I think the mouth areas are far too big.
It's just overdone for the sake of being overdone. However, really glad the colours are so vibrant when I was expecting super drab, washed-out colours. And I really like the little lightning storm inside the chest diamond that looks like it's deep inside their torso's. Really makes it look like they're more than people in normal suits, and alludes not only to the lightning bolt logo, but an actual power source. Basically I like the intent, but not the execution. I like them, it's been an uphill battle with the designs in the movie but I am enjoying everything after I get past stupid things in my head. Though these are the first designs that I have enjoyed from the moment I saw them. Definitely feel a bit more Kamen Rider-ish mixed with exactly what you'd expect from Hollywood with Power Rangers.
|
For the most part i think they look cool, however the helmets look really off.
|
Eh, they look fine.
I don't think they're any weirder than the first movie suits seemed back when the first movie came out. As someone early on pointed out, at least they're colorful. I'm sure somebody behind the scenes was pushing for all-black with different colored stripes. |
First thoughts were that these looked bad. Now, they don't look as bad, but I'd like to see them in action before finalising the decision.

Guyver + Iron Man + MMPR Movie Suits = Nope.
The helmets are awful. The proportions are way off, they look weirdly elongated or something. Rita was slowly settling into my consciousness as OK, thanks to the on-set pics, but this is about a million steps in the other direction. |
Yes. All of my yes, this movie can have all of my yes. I had the feeling they'd be armored suits like the original movie, but with more modern flair, and so glad my feeling was right. And if you look closely at Red's chest, you can almost make-out a hologram image inside the diamond. More than likely a T-Rex. Which I hope means they all have the same of their respective animal inside their chests. Oh! Maybe that's how they call the Zords!
I LOVE MOVIE SPECULATION o_o I am in love with these suits as much as I'm in love with Rita's reveal. Bring This On Right Now! |
i think these suits look great. i wish some of the helmets harkened back more to MMPR.. but the red ranger's helmet looks fantastic. i can't wait for figures of these suits.

these look far more practical than the traditional spandex. that's why this makes sense. plus, it's not like these suits are bulky like the armored batman, even the iron man armors look a bit more bulky than these. i think it's a great compromise between something that looks practical, yet still has that power ranger flair. so yeah, my only complaint is that other than the pink and red rangers the others' helmets don't look MMPR enough for me. but hey, red ranger is my favorite, and it looks like he's got the best helmet, so, i can deal with it. now we just need to see the zords. |
Eh. The suits themselves are fine I think, but the helmets look a bit off to me. Plus, I feel those glowy Arc Reactor things are completely pointless; they'd look better without them.
|
Not really a big fan. I don't hate them, but I don't like them. I wish that the "gloves" and "boots" were white/silver to break up all that color, and they need belts because the buckle at this point looks just like a weird navel piercing. At least the colors aren't muted for a "dark and gritty" look.

Anyone else think the Red Ranger suit looks like Lord Zedd?
|
Quote:
Red ranger is gonna become Zedd, much like how Rita is basically a proto-Green ranger, and the sequel will introduce Rocky to replace our former Red Ranger! |
The next thing they need to show us is the Zords/Megazord.
|
I dig it.

Well, they're better than they could be, but yeah not too big a fan of them right now, but I'm going to save final judgement until I see them in action. Still they could definitely do with better helmet designs... And belts... And boots. :I

And let's face it, the spider-man suit is FAR more iconic than the ranger suits are. I don't think there's as much of a desire to be faithfully accurate to the source material here as there is with something like spider-man. Especially since every iteration of the rangers have had different suits. This also needs to appeal to general audiences. 5 teenagers in spandex compared to five teens in really slick armor with lights.. There's no question which wins out. These rangers are also rooted in advanced technology.. Zordon, alpha, the zords.. It'd made sense that their suits are technologically advanced. They certainly look like they'd lend themselves well to martial arts movements. I know that people generally don't like change. But that's just the way it is. Iron man looks nothing like his original appearance, the transformers look nothing like their original appearances.. The x-men have changed, and captain America certainly isn't wearing his original costume. So, change and updates are par for the course. I loved the MMPR designs. The figuarts figures are some of my favorites.. But you know, I already have those, and I've seen them before. I'm totally open for something new, something updated, and something that looks more grounded in cinematic reality. I can understand why some people dislike these.. But I honestly never expected them to use the classic spandex suits. And hey.. Maybe they will use the normal suits at some point.. Who knows. |
I love these suits. I need to see the live action version of these. I have high hopes for this movie.

It feels like the worst of both worlds to me, personally, forcing in ties to draw nostalgia, but wanting to do their own thing and changing familiar things so radically. |
I'm just not that big of a fan of them.

I was goofing around in Photoshop and changed a few things here and there. They're not perfect, but I kinda like the direction I was going with it.
Minimizing the amount of random splotches of color and yanking off the blue wires works a whole lot better IMO. I don't know what I was doing with the cuffs and shin armor, but it's a start I guess. |
Oh, cool, a new version of Hibiki. :p
|
I personally love the new suit designs in their entirety. Now, if only they had what looked like magnified versions of their Power Coins on their chests so as to homage the suits used in 95's MMPR movie, then I would love them a whole lot more.
|
Wait I just thought of something.
Didn't they say the suits were supposed to look "organic"? Because this is like the furthest thing from that. |
I think part of the reason I'm offput by the design is because of how the Red Ranger is posed. He just looks so uncomfortable and awkward.

Also, Sentai have different suits because it's basically a different universe with each installment (they're not connected, or at least they're not supposed to be). This new movie is clearly a retelling of Zyuranger (the source material for the original MMPR), and it's straying from that significantly. I didn't expect spandex (I'm not that daft). I was willing to accept and was looking forward to new, updated suits, but not these. |
