Were they trying to make this think less recognizable? Maybe they didn't think homaging the original would draw a general audience?.. I still don't understand what they were thinking.

If they're trying to play up the alien-ness of it, then why bother with the t-Rex, triceratops, mammoth, etc..

People keep talking about a mastodon and while I am hoping that's what the black ranger's Zord is, that leaked image doesn't look like a mastadon at all. More like a giant Dung Beetle. I really have no clue how that thing transforms, its really odd. I hope the individual zords that combine look good.

This looks so terrible to me. The whole point of the Megazord is five individual Zords coming together to fight a monster. The new Megazord just looks like a bland grey action figure with a few splashes of colour. I don't get it at all. I was excited for the movie, but after seeing this, I'm not so sure.

On the plus side, it doesn't look as gangly as the original movie Ninja Megazord. That thing looked like Slenderman.

While the Zord posters don't exactly show you the full zords and same with anything other than the T-rex toy. They confirmed at con a while back and with the power coin toys that the zords will be the same animals as MMPR (Not that stupid fan remake that is pissing off it's backers). It just shows they really pushed forward with the alien aesthetic of the zords so much that i imagine it might be hard to figure out how it is a Mastodon. Heck the helmets are not much better even knowing what animals they are i couldn't confirm it what blue, yellow, or black are supposed to be.

Yeah, only the red ranger helmet is accurate to its motif animal while all the others look like they got mutant stingrays resting on their heads.

Pretty sure it was confirmed to be around the 20" mark in gestalt mode, according to an article connected to the T-Rex Zord reveal. And no, aside from adding some color, the DX version doesn't really look any better. In fact, it probably looks worse in that it's several components trying to look like a big grey man rather just simply being a big grey man.

I'm really looking forward to the movie, and I'm willing to give this new Megazord a chance. However, I'll wait till I see the full transforming one before I think about picking one up.

Are we sure these are still based off of animals that existed? I mean, the coins have very clear, very realistic depictions of the animals on them. Why are the zords so... weird?

The combined megazord itself I can give it a pass just on overall design alone without context.

No kidding, the mastodon zord looks like a mutated tardigrade with a longer snout/mouth thingy.
