just checked and yeah it's subbed. About to watch it now
|
Jesus christ are they serious about collecting 88 Kyutama's? I was just recovering from the ranger keys.
|
So I guess the big story with the premiere so far in this thread is the f***ing ED dance? This is why I just wait for subs. You end up with stuff to actually talk about. :p
Speaking of which, I really liked this premiere! It felt extremely cramped and fast paced, but not necessarily in a bad way. Anyway: - Okay, first off, I've massively underestimated this show's commitment to its premise. This was really big in scale, and I'm glad Toei realized they can just put some CG stuff in the sky and say "we're on a different planet now". Presumably this will be a thing throughout the show, and that's awesome. Though I wouldn't be surprised if we end up spending a lot of time on Earth anyway. - I like how we're waiting a bit to introduce everybody. Hopefully the show makes a big event out of everyone getting together for the first time the same way it made a big event out of pretty much everything that happened this week. - Speaking of big events, man, this stunt with Shishi Red sure was something. I'm slightly worried about this Lucky guy, since he seems like Daigo without the charisma, but I get the feeling he's probably going to have some character arc and get way cooler as the show progresses. Unless they really want to have a character who just stumbles his way into good things accidentally for 48 episodes. I anticipate the "Lucky's luck runs out" episode will happen before the halfway point. - All the mecha stuff was real cool. I especially dig those crazy cockpits. What I dig less (and this is pretty nitpicky) is how Kyuren-Oh's suit changes from having the Kajiki Voyager's nose as a sword and just having it be an arm between shots randomly. Like, I'm glad you didn't abandon the tradition of Sentai robots with swords, but, please, just pick one variation of the suit and stick with it for more than two shots. - OP is great! ED is really weird! Definitely not ちょうかっこイーグル. Man I'm gonna miss that pun. - Also, on that note, I still miss Yamato. I mean, I miss Zyuohger in general, but man, it's no wonder I'm not very into this Lucky dude. But now I'm really drifting. :lol Other than that I'm not sure what to even say. I'm a sucker for this sort of Sci-Fi stuff and this was a really flashy episode that made exactly the kind of bold statement Toei seemed to want to hype up, so kudos. Time will tell if there's any substance behind that flash, but for now that seems like a fun ride to be on. |
I wasn't feeling this episode at all. Too little of too much. I know it's for the toys and all, but did they really have to blow nearly their entire quarter catalog in one 25-minute episode? Hopefully it'll pick up after all the main characters are introduced, but I don't see myself being able to deal with Lucky for an entire season.
I do still like the OP though, but the ED is pretty terrible until it picks up and gets faster. I wish the whole song was like that, because I really like it. |
I was infinitely more interested and wrapped up in Garu's troubles than Lucky's. That's not a good thing, considering one is our lead protagonist, and another is going to be lost in a sea of rainbows, and I'm pretty certain Garu isn't Lucky enough to be a lead...
Lucky is so horribly bland. I wanna be a Kyuranger *Becomes Kyuranger* LUCKY! I wanna get a voyager *Gets Voyager* LUCKY! I know they're not going to drill it in as much after these first few episodes, but he's literally stumbling his way into power, and I hate that. Not everything has to be destined or anything, but I really, really don't like Lucky. The other characters are nothing special...I was hoping to really love Spada, but he was really rather bland. Ironic for a chef. Maybe once he gets more time to do things. I was really rather underwhelmed. Lucky has no charm to him, the other 3 didn't really get much anything, and Garu was cool. The mech fight was both cool and tired. They really should take more advantage of them being in space, and I so hope they do. I liked it, but I have a feeling that I won't be a fan of them in 4 more episodes if they devolve into the standard Sentai fare. Unlike Zyuohger, nothing really popped out for me. I'll keep with it, though. Also, I like that they're beginning with the team not complete yet. Reminds me of Kakuranger, and that's good. |
I'm not voting yet since I've only seen the raw (I'll wait for TVN for the sub; do NOT translate any part of the series name, UGH), but so far, it's feeling like a 5. Observations:
- I suspect that we were introduced first to Hami, Spada, and Champ as a brief nod to the "team after the anniversary starts with three members" tradition. - "Yossha, lucky!" is already grating, and I'm not sold on that performance. I'm a little worried we've got another Takaharu on our hands. His voice *sounds* like Daigo, but he's kinda got Takaharu's dead eyes. (And in fairness, it's hard to match the charisma of Daigo's actor.) - I did not notice an "Uchuu Sentai... KYURANGER! *explosions*" group pose in this episode. That's kind of unprecedented, isn't it? - I'm already enjoying the performances on the part of Hami and Spada's performers. Oh, SNACK, the actress who plays Hami reminds me of Luka from Gokaiger, which is funny, since as I understand it, she's playing the voice of Raptor 283. - They mostly successfully pulled off the battle locations not feeling entirely familiar, and the completely new mecha battle set is very atmospheric. This series may yet actually pull off feeling different. - We've had series in which the red hero joins an established team last (Kyoryuger and Gekiranger), but this episode makes the red hero *next* to last, which may have been another deliberate attempt to break a pattern. - I did NOT expect that KyurenOh would be functional with no legs: that's great, and it opens up some (effects-heavy) new possibilities. The Kyutama cockpits are seriously cool. This is a great-looking series on a lot of levels. - But oh, honey, we need to talk about that closing sequence. Maybe... it'll grow on me? I'm sort of aching for the kind of low-key, atmospheric, NON-DANCING closing sequence from Shinkenger. I kinda liked the "jumping on the planet" visual, but not enough to get past how much I don't like the fish-eye lens. Not a fan, yet. - I was hoping we wouldn't meet all nine Kyurangers in the first episode, and I was partially rewarded. It's not quite as slow as build as I'd have liked - we've got 5-6 in the first episode, depending on whether you want to count un-transformed Raptor 283. Stinger didn't appear at all, and Balance and Naga Rey appear only momentarily. Looks like we may not meet Stinger next week, either, which'd be swell, but my money's on him getting teased in the last 30 seconds like these two. - I wonder just how modular the opening and closing sequences are. They seem to be deliberately holding back the four heroes we haven't met/seen transformed yet, but they're present in other shots. I'm greatly looking forward to having words added, but the plot was intelligible without it. I'm amused by how much of the Japanese I can kinda follow given that I still haven't taken an actual class. |

Wow, OT is quick. I'll watch it after I finish Ultraman Orb.

Just watched it subbed. Thank you O-T. They know how to translate.

Hmm... I'm not sure what to make of this so far.
On the one hand, I really like the premise: a small band of resistance fighters traveling around the galaxy, battling an evil empire. I think there's a lot of cool potential here, assuming they don't just land on Earth at some point and stay there the rest of the show. I also like how each Kyuranger is an alien and not all of them are humanoid, that's a cool touch. On the other hand, the pacing on this first episode was really bad. I know they wanted to get everything established right away, but establishing the team, adding two new members, and introducing the mech all in <25 minutes left the episode feeling incredibly rushed. It may have slowed down the show, but I think they should have introduced Garu or Lucky in this episode, not both. The other big problem I'm having is with the characters. Lucky is goddamn awful. There have been louder and dumber Reds, but this guy is just incredibly obnoxious. "Randomly bumping into the plot" is a pretty lazy super power, his motivation is incredibly shallow, and that catchphrase needs to stop right the hell now. I honestly don't know if I can watch more than a few episodes of this if he's going to be like this every damn week. |
Just watched the "raw" version (didn't know that was a thing till it came up as an option when typing Kyuranger into Youtube), and even though I had no real idea what was going on it was still kinda interesting. Like others have said, I definitely want the changer now... even with it's rather dissapointing handle.
Trying to not judge the characters till I can understand what is going on, but I get the distinct feeling that, much like Power Rangers, I'm going to be dissinterested in whatever is going on with the Red Ranger. I just really hope that when this inevitably gets turned into the 2019-20 PR series that we don't get yet another Red Ranger searching for their father. It's too bad BoJ doesn't make figures of the female Rangers. A figure of the Pink Ranger in her non-Ranger look would be kinda cool. |
I'm going to be the first one who says he likes the ED, aren't I? Not really the song, but... I dunno, the trippiness of the visuals just made me laugh through the whole thing. It's too weird.
I'm going to have to echo the rushed feeling, it felt like important things kept getting skipped, especially where Garu's involved. Lucky too, but he's got that whole... yeah, he's kind of nuts. Not in the fun way but I feel like logic kind of breaks down in his presence. Like... did we have to make his ENTIRE character based around his luck? I mean, at least you can argue his luck isn't all good, what with continual near-death experiences, but since they only emphasize the good moments, it just makes him annoyingly cheerful. Also, am I the only one who feels that this was a bad gimmick for a lead character? Still, I like the action, especially when the team is split between mechs and foot. I'm hoping to see them really take advantage of not needing the whole team to do the big guy, lets them break up those bits of action a little more and helps the fights feel a little more chaotic. Hoping to see Lucky's, er, luck be more erratic in future as well. I'm okay with him lucking out of shit as long as he also lucks into shit as well. Maintain the balance, ya know? |
Most of this was okay, but everything that was kinda nice got completely ruined for me because Lucky. God I hate these awful screaming lunatics they stuff into a Red costume every other year. Yamato was so much better it isn’t even funny, it’s sad.
So yeah, decent premise I guess. I mean it was a disjointed mess like every first Sentai episode because they can’t throw enough toy ads at the children, this story could’ve had something if they took what happened here and split it into three episodes and had it paced better, but we all know that’s never going to happen so… meh. I’ll watch a couple more episodes but if this stays the way it is I’ll give it the middle finger and go back to hating modern Sentai again. |
I totally freaking loved this first episode. It was everything I was hoping for and more so far. Champ, Spada, and Hammy were fun in the beginning. Spada is one of my favorites so far. Love the cooking puns and everything. Garu's back story was completely awesome and I loved him believing in himself and wanting to fight. Lucky was a lot of fun and I love the random stuff that happens to him. I love the story of this right now and I can't wait for more.
|
Just fuck this episode. Seriously this was ok till the exposition dump that lead to the rush. By the time it got to the fight on Garu's planet I was yelling slow the fuck down. I will give this and maybe the next few episodes slack for them having to get a team of 9 together before episode 5 probably but damn this pacing was so awful. Also fuck Lucky! I would love to care about Garu but they rushed his introduction and background so quick with the hyperactive child Lucky. Damn I miss Zyuohger because their first episode was at least better paced plus didn't leave me annoyed and with a fucking headache. PLEASE DESTROY LUCKY'S CAFFEINE AND SUGAR SUPPLY FOR OUR FUCKING SANITY!!!!
|
Good lord we just got another Takaharu aren't we?
I just feel i miss zyuohnger character already... This episode ruined because lucky IMO If this keep up i don't what to say really.. Please don't be another nininger |
This first episode felt really rushed with so much stuff thrown at you, but it's not terrible. Lucky doesn't seem all that great a protagonist, but I do like the rest of cast. For now, I'm sticking with it.
|
I'm watching the first subbed. I have enough thoughts to almost want to live blog it.
It's got all the heart of GoKaiger, but all the frenetic pace of ToQger. Why is Lucky screaming so much? Isn't Shogun of the Space Shogunate kind of a redundant title? Planet...JugJug? Sounds like somewhere you'd franchise a Hooters. 11 minutes in and I'm having a Kamen Rider man moment. So....many.....tropes. So....many....toys..... Red's first henshin is actually pretty spectacular. Finishers are Final Fantasy level extinction events. I can go with it. The flagship makes me miss the elegance of the GoKai Galleon. It's like a giant ice cream cone with a fist attached to it. I'm going to call it an unidentified fisting object. Is Blue's suit actually made of suede? Is suede even a henshin suit material? With a fur lined neck? Got that mecha out quick didn't they? Like no build up, just here we go. Also, they're individually piloting, instead of all together in one group. That's something we haven't seen in a while. Overall, I like it. Lots of story possibilities when you have 9-10 characters to write for for the next 49 episodes. |

Edit: I forgot there are some newer faux fur fabric variations, too. It could easily be one of those. I spent way too much time working in craft stores in ye olden days. :D |
I can't find a decent sub. Any suggestions?
|
I am not going to be here for Episode 2 on February 18 since I am going to a christening for my nieces. I won't be here on February 25 either for Episode 3 since I am going on vacation.
|
Well then you can always catch up afterwards. XD Have fun with the events of your life. ^_^

Could a mod please delete this post? Thanks in advance!

Already better than Zyuohger. I love the uniqueness of the team and I'm glad that they're not introducing everyone at once. I really like Garu, he's pretty cool. The opening and ending are both really good. The ending theme is stuck in my head now. I love the mecha and how they use them as spaceships. Lucky's catchphrase was definitely overused so I hope they tone it down a bit.
|
Wow. Um. This is probably a top-5 Sentai premiere in my book. It's easily the best premiere since Gokaiger.
A ton happens in the episode, which effects the pacing, but that's de rigueur for Sentai premieres. I feel like this one-ups most premieres, in that we get a character-focus episode (Garu), in addition to a plot-focus episode. Usually, we get a very quick, superficial introduction to all of the leads. Here, we're given one character with a substantial level of depth and four others with a ton of potential. Of the 30+ premieres I've watched, I can think of like, two that do that. I know a lot of us have hot-blooded red phobia, but after a show with a very low key red, it's refreshing to have someone with more energy. And at least the actor is better than Takaharu in the first episode of Ninninger. He's also 1000 times less annoying than Magiranger's Kai, Dekaranger's Ban, and Gekiranger's Jan in their respective first episodes. Plus, his first henshin was baller af. The action was fresh. The mechs were badass (especially their first accidental gattai). The SFX were beautifully designed. The sets are cool. The actors are unique. The villains are suitably threatening (especially compared to Zyuohger). I was already in it for the long haul, cause it's Sentai, but now a lot of my fears have been allayed. |
I wish I could be as optimistic as some of you guys :lol
I really want to like this show, but this opening really did nothing for me |
This is my first Sentai I've watched in a long time since I love the theme this year. The episode was a bit fast-paced and Lucky's catchphrase was tedious, but wasn't bad overall. Loved the opening and actually liked the dance and music for the ending to.
Now, time to spend some money Kyuranger goodies :P |

- Take. A. Damn. Break. That was rushed as hell, even by sentai's standards . If they had not packed 3 episodes into 1, they could not have show this shiny robot, right ? It's not like they had ~50 episodes to foll... no wait, they have 50 episodes to follow.
- That said, it's cool to have diversity in the suits, the mechs are not bad either. - I don't mind the ED, it was visually interesting. - Obnoxious red is obnoxious. Don't pay attention to him, it makes him yell louder. - I hope it will last a bit before they go to Earth (I expect low budget episodes from there). |

-- Also, even though I echo people's sentiments regarding Lucky being annoying, which, as someone who likes Daigo and loves Takaharu and thinks he's horribly misunderstood, is worrying, I'd encourage everyone to reserve judgement for at least a few episodes. I think this one was just too busy to flesh him out beyond "guy who shouts how lucky he is a lot", rather than that actually being his whole deal. Or at least I hope so. |
Of course I'm going to watch until we get the full 9 member transformation and pose, so that's at least 3 episodes (Likely 4, since Pink and Orange don't really seem to be connected to each other).
It's just that, it's kind of clear that for these first 5 or 6 episodes, Lucky's character trait is going to solely be "LUCKY!" as we introduce our main cast. So while I don't doubt Lucky will get better, these early episodes I fear are going to be really annoying... |
All of this talk about Lucky being annoying and screaming "LUCKY!" let's not forget that he is the "Super Star".

I think I'm going to watch this a second time.

I have to say, I wasn't that impressed. The space aesthetic was neat, but the characters were kind of meh. It seemed like everyone was boiled down to one personality trait that they just kept hitting over and over again. The most obvious example of this is Lucky. I will keep an open mind as there will be more time to slow down and flesh all of these guys out. But if this one note characterization keeps up, I don't think this show will have any legs.
