The 2017 we see when Another Build is created (and throughout all of episode 2) had none of that. It was just the standard world. So, we see two different versions of 2017 in these Zi-O episodes even though none of the characters comment on it directly since it's not really related to Zi-O's plot. Quote:
-2017 is the only date shown (through the Cross-Z RideWatch) -New government cabinet announced on tv, and Japanese general elections were in 2017. -They show a remake of the Sawa/Gentoku meeting from the beginning of Build. So, they basically showed the Build World 2017 in episode 1 in order to make Build references with the skywall, Smash and their hideout, and then just had Sento and Banjo in the main world's 2017 for episode 2 since it works better for Zi-O's setup. I'd guess they didn't attempt to explain how that works for several reasons, like Zi-O still establishing its basic premise and cast during these episodes too, so commenting on an unrelated alternate world set up (and that world being fused away) would just overcomplicate things. |

I don’t understand a thing of what I watched...
Basically Episode 1 was the Skywall world from Build and Episode 2 was when the Skywall World fused with the Original world... After their encounter in original 2017 Sento and Banjo don’t remember a thing about who they are and they lost their powers... We see them in 2018 and they regain their memories after giving the Ridewatch... basically? And Geiz says that Build is not back...so what does that mean? Sento and Ryuga permanently lost their powers? Do they remember who they are? If someone can clarify.... |

This is my face attempting to understand how all the time travel works in this show. It pretty much doesn't, so we're going with a "No Rules" scenario. (Or rather, three rules, one of which is 'Don't think about it to hard'.) And, considering that rule, this wasn't a bad episode. All the characters get to show off a little personality, Sento and Ryuga's cameos are neat, and I will never be sick of "Let's get Yanikiku Tonight" references. And they have me hooked for next episode with the promise of the Only Winner. I'm definitely EXCITE. |
So Zi-O is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. Letting the time jackers fuck with the past and replace riders with another riders is no good but just Zi-O being there and obtaining the rider powers also erases the original timelines. Damn. Sougo is asking a lot from Geiz, Tsukuyomi and the audience to believe in him and his ability to do the right thing in the end.
I'm interested in where this goes. It's kinda funny that the anniversary season is "destroying" every season before it haha. Oh and why is our boy Emu always so pissed off? lol |
I am sorrow. I am disappointment.
Zi-O sucks 'cause it's written by incompetent. Episode 2.5 is a pathetic excuse to deliver a wild card to plot hole abuse. That will be a record for me to drop a KR show before episode three. |

-Fictional universe, bud. Their elections don't have to coincide w/ ours. -This....is actually a pretty good point. But it's your ONLY good point, so still, this statement is still pretty shoddy of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. No, the Build World we see in Zi-O's going back to 2017 is the original world, where the Skywall existed. 2017 is when that world still existed, therefore, it's available to go back to. After all, if they really did go to the New World, where the Skywall & Evolt never happened, then why would Sento & Ryuga have their powers when there's no threat to fight, and why would Sento still be a thing & not be Takumi Katsuragi & Sato Taro instead? |

In episode 1 of Zi-O they also show two different 2017's, the Skywall one (That Geiz knocked Zi-O into, as in forced into another timeline) and the main one where Another Build gets made. The only way for Sento and Banjou to actually be in the main timeline while also being able to forget everything that happened is that the merge brought them back to 2017. If this was the Sky Wall World, Then that means that they never would've gotten to the main timeline in the first place. |
I'm not gonna lie, I'm... not enjoying this so far. This episode in particular was a dire attempt at a tribute to Build, with barely any solid connection nor many characterful interactions. The whole thing just felt completely off and dull, and it makes me worry for the other legend rider interactions. Which is pretty strange, since I thought if anything about Ninninger was well-done; it was the use of the previous heroes! And yet in this, Sento and Banjou are just kinda... there. Pushed off to the side with new viewers learning nothing about them and returning viewers not getting a chance to see how they've gotten on since Build's last episode. This could have been done with any Legend Rider and it doesn't exactly make me ecstatic to see how they handle Ex-Aid and the rest.
I do have a few things I like. Zi-O and Geiz' respective Rider Kick effects are fantastic, and Woz continues to be a joy to watch. I also admit fully to adoring Sento saying he was jealous of Another Build for getting to hug Banjou. But all in all this was just kinda disappointing. Very little substance to the episode and an inconsistent time flow which, while not a bad thing in and of itself, was pulled off very badly going by the confusion of not just myself but clearly a lot of people here. There's every possibility future episodes will be better, but right now they did not land a good first impression in the slightest. |
Quote:
I agree, but I'll save my "Oh dear god they're gonna keep doing this" for when the Ex-Aid tribute is done. This also could've been a case of "we know we got a Build team-up in 3 months so, let's keep it short" |
Quote:
Just, again. Very bad first impression. |
Another problem might be that this was all written without much knowledge of how the Build finale was going to go, depending on how much the writer share between each other. Ex-Aid's been over for a year now (and doesn't have multiple words deals to confuse things), so it might be easier to tie together.
Also, I've put together a theory of how all this timeline shenagin stuff works out. To me, this makes the most sense. SKYWALL WORLD 2017 - Heisei Generations final occurs, uniting the two worlds for a bried time. This is what allows Zi-O to cross over, and is where the Build portion of Episode 1 occurs. SKYWALL WORLD 2018 - Build finale, which dumps Sentou and Ryuuga inti... MAIN WORLD 2017 - Because Sento and Ryuga have to be around at this point, per episode 2, as they fight Kaijin Rider Build. This is where the creation of KaiRide Build occurs, and his defeat, in a time loop. Sento and Banjou, because their powers have been stolen by Zi-O, are affected, morphing Sento back into Takumi mentally, and reverting Banjo;s character development. However, it doesn't change things fully, probably because (as Den-O showed) time is hard to change - even if their past has been infected by an evil Kaijin Rider, the two are still friends. MAIN WORLD 2018 - In some looping timeline, where KaiRide Build lived, he gets blown up by Geiz. This restores the timeline, allowing Sento and Banjo to regain their memories, and give Sougo the Ride Watch which he only gives them when KaiRideBuild is destroyed, which hasn't happened yet because he doesn't have the RideWatch and KaiRideBuild is still around, and oh dear I've gone cross-eyed. Basically, the best I got is that the Another Watches don't do anything specifc, they just pervert the timeline. I'm basing this off the Eighth Doctor novels, though, so don't blame me if it doesn't make sense. Those don't make sense either. God, I hate time travel. |
I liked it.
I also spent half the show trying to figure out the time paradoxs and wtf was going on. Pretty colors, rider kick! neat! wait what?! ...carry the build, a remainder of cross-z with build left over, carry the 1, 2 plus 2 equals, who's that guy what's going on? I think I got it now but...shoot I hope every episode this season isn't going to be time paradoxes and weirdness. I really liked this camera shot... https://i.imgur.com/1CtuiQq.jpg |
Time travel.
They screw your brain. And how did Geiz got Ghost RideWatch is the question I want answer in like episode 5 I guess? Another Build is a good character by the way, nicely developed. It perverse the notions of Best Match and Nebula Gas and doing it nicely. It even has better use of the bottles by swimming and shooting like crazy :) |
I do like how Swimmer and Archer is essentially a callback to Pirate Train in terms of loose themes. I also like how they set up the joke of Sougo not being good at physics in Episode 1 with Tsukuyomi's exposition to pay off on it with Sougo's equations being him not understanding anything.
Also even Zi-O knows Sento and Ryuga have a thing for each other, that whole, "Build! Cross-Z! Best Match!" and "I feel oddly jealous" had me cracking up. There are just some nice little quirks in this episode with the Build Cast, since I wasn't expecting too much since these guys were gonna be Sougo's first swing at things at the end of the day. Sento acting like a proud parent and going over and telling Sougo what to do was also great. But let me tell you, Woz is probably my favorite part of this show right now. He's Zi-O's hype man, witnessing the birth of his favorite King, and just pops up out of nowhere. I love him, also he does a story time for the recap in front of a repainted Cronus Clock, that's also pretty great. And lastly, I love how this show does show that not even Geiz is perfect despite him wanting the best for the future. Because it's implied he's run into the Time Jackers and Another Riders on multiple occasions, but chose to blow them off for trying to kill Sougo. Overall this series so far is a bit messy, but it's a fun kind of messy. |
Yeah, Woz simply steals the show whenever he shows up.
And why does he have the Zi-O driver? |
This is confusing but I guess I'll just continue watch to understand instead of trying to figuring things out.. But one thing that I understand is that there are three sides in this show, Geiz and Tsukuyomi trying to prevent Oma Zi-O to be born, Time Jackers trying to rise their own king, and Woz making sure that Oma Zi-O rise.
|
Ok, confused.
1. If Build is a parallel world, then why is skywall where zi-o went? Before he went to the past, zi-o visited sento in 2018 right? Soooo |
Quote:
Mind you it's been confirmed that Build's world was a seperate dimension, by the Ex-Aid team up movie. |
Ok, so sento in 2018 is from the new world, right?
|
which 2017 does he go back to in this episode? Skywall there or new world?
|
Quote:
And yes Sento from 2018 is in the new world/main timeline. |
In episode 2.5 mentioned that to defeat an Another Rider we need the same Rider's power. In this episode Sougo already have Build's power in 2018 then why would they need to defeat the Another Rider in 2017? Though it's still necessary to go to the past to give Sento(or Katsuragi) and Banjou the watch.

Loving the show so far.
Seems the inherit system means more than only the powers with how it rewrites history. Which will likely come back up in the movie too, and the back half, with some way to try and restore that. Or further dive into it and the rammifications of how it alters the timline of that rider in the years the Kaijin is active during by replacing the rider. I think it might also mean they inherit the problems too. So that may explain some future stuff, as well as how other areas will play into this and why they have belt sounds too. As meta-commentary goes, it also speaks to how the writers/producers inherited the shows and history too, to make use of it. Which goes to the whole internal system of how things are decided on and that side of the business used to then in show, and the artistic nuance to take advantage of that as commentary on the Heisei era of riders as a whole. Which may explain another future thing coming up next year based on the belt sounds leaks and other info. Also thanks to the 2.5, it seems outright that Agito's episodes much later may play a bigger role in the another rider system. With how Another agito is the original another rider that was a replacement and likely the origin of why the another rider system exists and the source of the name itself. We'll probably know more once casting is settled on that when it's time, so they know what they have to work with. But 2 and 2.5 really seem to point at that, and I especially love how 2.5 listed rules to basically tell fans to not overthink it and enjoy the ride(r). Essentially a "stop being so anal." But the entire story aspect of "Another Rider" is similar to those types of stories of copycats trying to replace the original and how much they fail at it or would screw things up worse. Which seems especially poignant with how Zi-O saved Geiz and Tsukuyomi by cutting away harmful pitches from hitting them from a fake that was hurting people not helping or saving. Kind of an interesting sub-commentary of the massive amount of bad suggestions about riders certain types of fans do. Loving the metaphor usages in this so far. It seems awfully pointed and fun. Especially that 2.5 after show where it's basically saying "here are the rules" and that "fans need to chill and enjoy the ride(r)." The show is really more of a mix of Den-O and Decade it seems. Using Decade's alternate world/different versions with Den-O's time travel. Making the inherit system rewrite history and making it so those shows never existed. So the parallel world stuff is entirely moot which is our 4th wall break point as a show concept. It's all one unified world. Which will likely come into play later with how different bad guys may want to use that to their advantage in how it erases their rivals. So far, the team has done a great job. Looking forward to how the rest plays out and is implemented. Especially loving how Geiz and Tsukuyomi are now living with Sougo and his uncle. Which is fitting with the watch theme. Really makes me look forward to the October episodes and the Uncle with Tsukuyomi talks. And really can't wait until she gets her own belt too. Looking forward to another stellar series from Toei. Quote:
Like say if the swimmer he bottled ended up becoming a gold medal winner, then on cereal boxes, which later inspired another kid that eventually led to that kid becoming an astronaut, or designer of a pool enhancement that saved lives, or anything else that blossomed from that one swimmer's life. Athletes and other high profile names impact the world as a whole on the timeline side of things. Same as the individual impacts those around them too, which is a domino effect from what that inspiration led others to do, that then impacted those lives, and so on. Like the old saying goes, one act of kindness can lead to a world of change. And it's true. One person buying someone in line after them a subway sandwhich because they held up the line too long, can keep that customer after them in a good mood while driving on a highway afterwards to prevent an accident, that would have impacted others, and then how that impacts others, and so on down the line. All from 1 act of kindness. It's why the "pay it forward" practice is so important. You never know how one act of kindness can spiral forward helping more. This is part of the principle to the pay it forward coffee system too. Same could be said of the rider series really. How one random act can lead to change and 20 series later, here we are. All because randomly Saban tried to bring it stateside once upon a time, and expanded finances for Toei by bringing power rangers to the world stage. Broadening Toei's resources and areas that help them finance shows and work on them. Sentai and Riders may not exist today as we know them without that. Same as a whole lot of other things. Without that, we wouldn't be here now posting about Zi-O itself. Or for that matter, even this site itself existing. Without Saban's pursuit of bringing this material stateside in the late 80s and early 90s, and the other companies that did similar like Biokids or what have you because of Toei's shows. Adults today, likely the very ones that pursued this site itself, wouldn't have been as inspired and drawn to the media to do so. Same to the companies that tried to make Ultraman more global. Like Tsuburaya's licensing it out to Australia for a series. Or the original black and white dubs. So a domino that creates the future, if you turn it sideways, then it doesn't fall in place anymore, and impacts nothing or stops the tide of change. So you have to go back to it, re-orient it, then let it fall setting everything else in motion. Which is essentially timelines and how they change by theories of time travel. Which also brings us back to importance of Zi-O cutting away pitches that would have hurt Geiz and Tsukuyomi, because Tsukuyomi in particular may affect the rider timeline as a whole on a meta scale. Which is directly lecturing fans through metaphor by saying "stop telling us to hurt them, because we aren't going to" or more particularly "Tsukuyomi is off-limits from harm because she's protected, and those bad pitches are being cut away." As well as how not only did Zi-O cut away those bad pitches, but Geiz was shielding her. Which also gave us a character defining point. Geiz wanting to save people and isn't fully blinded by his mission, and how this Sougo isn't like their Sougo and something set that in motion that changed time to turn him into Oma Zi-O. Allowing their humanity to come through as well, which also goes back to them traveling to the past which saved more lives. Which the domino effect is also shown through Sento and Banjo by how they got the ride watches to give to Sougo a year later to cause and close the loop. Which then brings us to the ramifications of the inherit system and what all Sougo inherits when he defeats the monster too and how that impacts the original rider. Paradox powered Rider really when you think about it. Which bring us back to the 2.5, and rule 3. Don't overthink it. Domino effects are weird like that. Some dominos may have even affected Dominos. xD |

So now that we've got Rukia and Renji living with Ichigo....I mean Tsukuyomi and Geiz living with Soggy, does this mean that more hilarious hijinks will ensue?
Because the whole point of that episode was confusing other than to say that Sougo is just a nice guy and we don't know if he's going to sour like a milk carton expiration date. I will say the best part of it all is the way they made the Build Armor suit, and having to shake it to make it. And the equations being their own puns. |
The first two-parter left a bad taste in my mouth. Acting is bad, effects are bad, writing is bad, the tribute portion was even bad. Doesn't follow Build's continuity and makes nothing of the returning characters. And my god some of the effects are unbelievable in a bad way.
I did like the design of Another Build and how he had his own weird Best Matches. The pacing of the episodes was all over the place and I don't have a read on Sougo, Tsukuyomi or Geiz. I think Woz is pretty funny though. It's too bad the Build episodes were bad but we'll see Sento and Banjou again in the winter film so I can make an exception here. Rider pilots are rarely good, so this was to be expected honestly. The opening theme and visuals for the Rider henshin's are very cool though. And the 0.5 spin-off episodes are absolutely hilarious! |
