https://i.imgur.com/LeHqryS.png Full size: https://i.imgur.com/LeHqryS.png The shoes are all stickers. I don't have a pink gundam marker yet, but when I get one, I'll probably replace the triangles on ankle parts. And after taking pictures of the belt, I realized there's some silver parts I missed, namely the frame around the "screen" (and they really should've been painted that before the sticker). |

What you say about color seems a good idea, I think you can buy them individually, do you have any reference for those you mentionned ? Quote:

A friend that painted warhammer figurine told me to wash the plastic, to paint it with a special paint (gray, that act like a undercoat), then to repaint it (that means all the figure then) Is it the way ? or can I paint it directly ? I already wash plastic before mounting to try to remove oil so the stickers stick a bit longer (don't know if it really helps) Thanks for your answer ! Neoxul |
Gold = Gundam Marker GM04
Silver = Gundam Marker GM05 Black = Gundam Marker GM38 Airbrush is a lot more work. I do not recommend unless you want to repaint the whole model. Markers and paintbrush are better for just details. For warhammer figure, you have to use a primer (the undercoat which can be any color, but usually grey). That is because you paint those figures with acrylic based paint and that doesn't stick to plastic without the undercoat. Gundam marker are alcohol based so you can paint directly. This is why I think they are best for details. Washing does help. Newer model kits are better at being clean right out of the box. Old kits from the 80s and 90s had lots of oil on them. I always wash the runners if I plan to do a full repaint. Oil from your hands also interferes with paint and stickers. |

Others kamen rider of the line doesn't have this problem ! |
Quarantine has me really stretching my hobbies.
I keep looking at Zi-O trying to improve him so I painted the ride watches on his wrists. https://i.imgur.com/aMV7pL9.jpg https://i.imgur.com/YODuAkS.jpg I only painted the two front-most ride watches as depicted on the Figuarts. It was actually a lot easier than I expected. Just one very tiny brush and a droplet of paint. The Build watch really pops! While I was at it, I painted some clear gloss over the Ziku driver screen. It's a little shiny now, though its hard to tell in the photo. It definitely darkened the sticker, which means the sticker is absorbing the gloss material and could eventually peel off on its own. If that happens, I will print out a replacement using a transparent printer sheet. For now I think Zi-O is done! https://i.imgur.com/VQYotto.jpg |

I looked for those gundam marker on amiami : I found silver and gold but black was referenced under differents codes : GM10 GM20(line panel) Only Creos Gundam Marker - Black GM10 can still be ordered A 6 pens markker set was also available with gold, silver and black with different code : -GM151 metallic set gold -GM152 metallic set silver -GM153 metallic set blue -GM154 metallic set green -GM155 metallic set red -GM20 sumi-ire brush pen (black) Would that be the same that those you talked about ? Thanks for you counseling ! neoxul |
GM10 is okay for black. GM38 is a little lighter, which is a personal preference. You can only tell the difference in bright light. GM20 is different type alltogether. You do not want that one.
That 6 pen set is shinier and lighter than the ones I recommended. They are good, but not the best match for normal Bandai colors. I used GM152 Silver for Zi-O's neck. I use GM05 silver for all of Kabuto's silver stickers. GSI made a new silver "XGM02 EX Shine Silver". I would order that one if you can. I ordered it, but it has been delayed due to COVID. |
SODO Kamen Rider Kuuga is complete.
https://i.imgur.com/F1uzXtu.jpg The paint for this figure was very minimal. https://i.imgur.com/LkfNZoN.jpg Silver paint at the belt (sticker on top of paint), red paint at the writs and gauntlets. The rest were stickers. I also added some more gold paint to areas on the wrist with a bad paint job. https://i.imgur.com/7pBwKA1.jpg I think I have decided to just collect the SODO Chronicles of all the main riders and display them doing their kicks. SODO are great but after Figure Rise standard and converge, do I need another figure? Yes I think I do. The 4 inch scale is probably my favorite size, putting them into that glassic GI Joe 1990s figure size. The articulation is great and there's just the right amount of customization and assembly for them to feel personal. I only wish they weren't so hard to acquire. And they can get too pricey for what they are! Either way, SODO Chronicles in particular feel very high quality. Kuuga uses a lot of shiny plastic, gold painted parts and a soft plastic for the horns. The one thing missing from SODO figures that would absolutely elevate them to master tier for me are the lack of compound eyes. If they remade them with multi-part compound eyes, I'd be in all over again! |
Re-organized my collection today. Something I've always wanted to do:
https://i.imgur.com/vohMdaZ.jpg https://i.imgur.com/AAtgYEE.jpg I have the Kiramager YU-DO and Minipla sets coming soon which I plan to paint. I really want to do Figure-Rise Den-O but I have no idea when its coming. Also picked up the new Gundam Markers EX Silver and White. Will test those soon. |

Secondaries on a shelf https://i.imgur.com/c6qy8pI.jpg and some more- bad guys, side characters, and other suits I just could not resist. https://i.imgur.com/6Wu72sX.jpg I love these things but there's some weird gaps. No Birth, Mach, Baron, Beast, Diend, or Garren. My big wishlist is: the other Kabuto Riders, Drive Type Formula, and Armed Hibiki. |
The YUDO figures for the currently airing Sentai season Mashin Sentai Kiramagers have finally arrived and this is how I've painted them. This is a guide for painting YUDO and SODO figures (which are very similar)
https://i.imgur.com/ojTfU0K.jpg KIRAMEI SPARKLING! For these figures I used: Gundam Marker EX Silver Gundam Marker EX White Gundam Marker GM38 "Black" YUDO and SODO figures use cheaper plastic with a gloss coating that makes paint sometimes hard to stick to it. Gundam Markers will work, but it may take some extra coats. Regular acrylic paint will not work at all. If you use acrylic paint, be prepared to mask and prime. For the first step, I lay out all the figures and examine them. https://i.imgur.com/I0IbZbx.jpg I compare them to online images and other high end figures (If its a SODO, look for the Figuarts equivalent). The Kiramagers have a lot of silver stickers which have designs on them so I can't outright replace them with paint. As a compromise, I plan to paint the edges of where the silver will stickers will go. The stickers only cover a surface and in many places, they don't cover the entire object. In the image below, the bangles and cuffs are molded as thick pieces. These is where I will be painting the most. https://i.imgur.com/lo3hnLI.jpg Once I have a plan, I look for any excess flash I can cut off and/or sand. https://i.imgur.com/aBNSwN0.jpg I am particularly looking for places that stickers will go to make sure they go on smoothly. The next step is to disassemble the figures to make painting easier. https://i.imgur.com/Hr82kDl.jpg I use a fine brush to paint all the black areas. These are just the shoes, the belt buckle, and the Kiramei changers. https://i.imgur.com/ssveim8.jpg Even though the changers will eventually be covered in stickers. I'm painting there in case the color pokes through in between the sticker parts. (The changers are molded to the primary color of each ranger). After I'm finished with black paint, I wait about 10 minutes to let it dry and move on to paint the silver parts. https://i.imgur.com/nnVi5gV.jpg You can see I've dissembled them further to get a better angle. I am only painting the edges. The stickers still do a great job at providing a uniform look to match the armlets which have insignia I can't reproduce. Because I'm not using the black part of the belt stickers, I actually cut up the stickers because I still want the tiny detail on the buckle piece. https://i.imgur.com/TnoPaba.jpg I use holders to help me paint parts that are hard to hold. These are the shoulder pads and the whole thing is painted silver. https://i.imgur.com/4X6gJdZ.jpg For big parts like these shoulder pads, I used the marker directly on them; no brush at all. You can see here I added silver paint around the neck like on the actual suits. https://i.imgur.com/LrKsCrU.jpg This is easy because the neckline has a molded ridge. I'm not freehand drawing a silver line, instead I let the marker do the work and barely make contact with the plastic area. Think of it like inking an embossed stamp. Next take a break and let the paint dry. With the white marker, I paint the necks and the tiny part below the helmet's jaw. As you can see, white is very difficult to paint on a color as vibrant as red. It takes quite a few coats. If it wasn't such a small area, I wouldn't even try painting it. Painting white is always a bummer. The painting on finer details like this white doesn't have to be perfect- you can even see Bandai's own paint job is a little sloppy when you're up this close. Once everything is painted, I apply all the stickers like you normally would (using tweezers!) then I reassemble each figure one at a time. https://i.imgur.com/pDPEBie.jpg Not pictured here, but at this point, I will take my hobby knife and clean up the paint job. This just means lightly scrapping off anywhere paint got out of hand. For bigger mistakes, you can clean off paint with rubbing alcohol or a specific "Gundam Marker Eraser". Scrapping away the paint is how you get those clean lines where a mold line isn't there to guide you. Here's the end result: https://i.imgur.com/huDLhZ4.jpg https://i.imgur.com/BhZN5k5.jpg The Kiramager YUDO figures are much improved from the LuPat ones. The painting is all in the details, but even without the paint, I still think they'd look great. The posability is superior to SODO, likely due to the slightly larger scale. The wrist joints have really good articulation as they are on an extended ball that you can pull in and out. I hope this guide was helpful! These figures are actually fun to paint because they are so small you can do it by hand with a brush. As things get bigger, you can start to see brush strokes and I begin to opt for my airbrush. A little paint goes a long way and I always recommend it! Please feel free to ask any questions. |
Dang man, you did some major work with those. Good stuff!
|
FRS Kuuga got a new coat of paint this morning.
Might be a little hard to tell from the photos, but the difference is amazing in person! Or should I say mighty! https://i.imgur.com/RbBO8qx.png Metallic red paint job on the left, straight out of box on the right. |
Those compound eyes really pop!
|
I might not be able to appreciate the full extent of it, but I can definitely see it's picking out details like the Linto markings a lot more!

Companies have been doing some impressive things with paint lately. Games Workshop's "Contrast Paint" line is based entirely on this type of capillary effect. Also metallic paints are better than ever. This picture of Den-O's rear shows the color matching between Gundam Maker silver and the silver runner. https://i.imgur.com/Cg3dviY.jpg |
So what you're telling us is that Den-O has a Premium(Bandai) quality behind. Right?
Jokes aside, I really do need to pick up a pack of metallic markers at some point. |
Perhaps I've just built too many Gunpla and the kits are feeling too same-y for me, but Minipla continue to impress.
Today we have Mashin Gattai Kiramaizin from the currently airing Mashin Sentai Kiramager! As we entered the final arc of Kamen Rider Zero One, I found myself getting the most enjoyment from Kiramager when it came to toku shows. At first, I thought the design of the mecha was too simplistic in the way in transformed, especially with Blue Jetter just being a straight up sword; but thinking off how each mech is a triple change and how Kiramaizin is also a combination of Land Mage and Sky Mage, I came to love the design and the many ways it was used in the show. https://i.imgur.com/hMCHG7v.png For paint: Mashin Fire - Molotow chrome marker on the "headlights". Gundam Marker Shine Silver beneath the red gem stones on the chest, front and back thigh stones, and beneath the side window gems. All stickers used. Mashin Shovellow - Gundam marker gold on the headlights, shine silver beneath the upper wheel. All stickers used. Mashin Mach - Shine silver under the hood and on back of the head that can be seen from the top. Metallic green on the headlights. I cut the headlight stickers to use the flame part in conjunction with paint. All black stickers used. Mashin Jetter - Molotow chrome paint on the windows, metallic blue on the kneecaps/underside gems. Slight modification to the flame stickers to get rid of the white part. Whats with all the flame styling? Mashin Helico - Metallic pink on the front windows. Shine silver underneath the helicopter blades. Metallic black on the landing gear and Sky Mage hands. Headlight stickers were used. Metallic blue paint for the top Sky Mage's head. The overall build was quite good and the end result is another winner for minipla. The articulation is impressive with optional joints for the waist skirt and ankles. It's a bit of a bummer that the actual head doesn't fit into Mashin Mach, but I'm glad they included a larger head option instead of leaving us with the squished one inside Mach. https://i.imgur.com/NdpmikY.jpg I'm want to pick up King Express Zabyun next but I hope he comes in his own set and I don't have to buy the Smog Jouki set. That guy looks rad. |
Hello,
tried to do some painting with the gundam markers I bought recently. Here is the result : https://i.postimg.cc/mks1HLpR/peinture-1.jpg Gold, silver and were easy to put, red was more difficult to put on the blue plastic. Tried silver and black elsewhere. One of the black is really black and cover eveything (it is hard to control where you stop). Another one is light (code GM20, it is light it hardly cover anything. I don't understand how it should be used (panel line ? I tried but it doesn't seems good to me) I have a difficulty to not go to far. Is there another method than putting masking tape to be sure to do things right ? (I hope it doesn't bother you if I put my test to seek your advice, tell me if it is the case) If I put a sticker over a part how should I remove it ? hot water ? Thanks for your advice ! Neoxul |
GM20 marker is not really good for anything. Maybe it is okay to panel white parts. Most of the time, the pen is dried up for me.
It might help you to apply the paint with a small paintbrush. This will help you control the paint better. I use a tiny paintbrush and work in layers to make sure the paint doesn't spread to places I don't want it. Masking doesn't really work with paintbrush and markers (it is mostly for airbrush). To remove sticker, use rubbing alcohol or dedicated sticker removal like Goo Gone. |

I read something about using it for paneling using a cotton swab to delete the ink. Quote:
Is it a special paintbrush ? I suppose you have to "wash" it after use, what should I use to do that ? Alcohol ? Water ? Quote:

Thank for your help. Neoxul |
I thought I was gonna do a guide for these but they turned out to be really simple.
First up is the SO-DO Rise Hopper. https://i.imgur.com/zZrZxh0.jpg For this one I used Gundam Marker EX Silver for the wheel spokes, the kickstand, and a couple of details around the engine. I used Molotow Chrome in the one spot there was a silver sticker. The SO-DO Rise Hopper is a nice little kit but feels on the big side. It's certainly wider than it should be, making it difficult to put a figure on properly. Well, it looks good and its the best rendition of the bike unless the Figuarts actually happens. Next up are the auxiliary robots from Kiramager. This was a full set of 5 minipla. https://i.imgur.com/6vD6M9T.jpg Here is the sticker sheet for all of them after I was done. https://i.imgur.com/xWJKuvV.jpg Again, I used Molotow Chrome for all the shiny silver headlights. I used Gundam Marker Metallic Black for all the black stickers. For Mashin Carry, I don't know why his non-jeweled parts are supposed to be white while everyone else is black. They come on a black runner with white stickers. I tried painting them white, but white is already a hard color to paint such a broad area, much less over black parts! I ended up using the stickers, but I wish I just kept them black. Anyway, I also messed up on the Molotow Chrome paint apps. The silly marker requires days to set and I kept accidently touching the chrome painted areas just trying to move around and pose the robots. I still think Minipla are great and these are an fun addition to the Kiramaizin. I mostly wanted it for the gun, but also there's a vacuum! How cool is that? The next upcoming kits that will be arriving this month are Figure-rise Standard Hibiki and Mashin Zabyu-N Minipla. I'm really excited for Hibiki and I've already outlined a plan based on the preview images and early build videos online. |
Hit the beat! Keep your beat!
Find the place that makes your heart shake! Hit the beat! Keep your beat! Find what no one else can do! Because that is your beat! https://i.imgur.com/0G9C1sE.jpg Figure-Rise Standard Hibiki has arrived and I could not wait to build it. The Hibiki suit is perhaps one of my favorite designs of all time. I constantly waver between my love of clean sci-fi suits like Kabuto and Faiz, and the really elaborate, almost scary looking suits like Hibiki and dare I say Decade. This was a long and arduous build due to the level of paint needed. Here are the colors I used: https://i.imgur.com/Xn6C3Ys.png https://i.imgur.com/qFjeO9i.png I almost attempted a metallic purple airbrush job for the forearms but it turns out Metallic Blue is actually a better match. I applied it going for a fade effect with a thick nylon brush. For reference I looked up images of the Shinkoccou Seihou Figuarts Hibiki and the Hibki promo poster from Heisei Generations Forever. So to start, I applied some Shine Silver to the face just in case the face stickers didn't cover up the whole area. https://i.imgur.com/UPljTHK.jpg Luckily the included stickers actually turned out better than I expected. There's definitely a visible seam down the center where the sticker is expected to fold, but not much can be done about it unless you wanted to attempt your own paint job. Hibiki's mask doesn't really "glow" like other riders, so I was okay with the way this looked. (The kit actually comes with an extra face sticker in case you mess up). https://i.imgur.com/1xskpM7.jpg The silver horns were hand painted with Shine Silver, the head emblem was done in gold, and I painted just the bottom jaw of the red mask part with "Char Red". https://i.imgur.com/VICJfTj.jpg Now comes the most time consuming part. The chest armor was painted in Shine Silver directly with the marker. Then after letting it dry, I touched up any parts I missed with a tiny brush. The strap underneath the armor was painted in a metallic black. These areas are very small and not very forgiving if you accidently touch one of the "teeth" on the way down. https://i.imgur.com/bXCDAA3.jpg Perhaps the most difficult part then was the Hibiki logo on his belt and both pairs of drum sticks. The kit comes with tiny wrap-around stickers which I knew were gonna be a nightmare to apply, but in hindsight I almost wish I went with the stickers. Painting the emblems first began with painting in between the crest in metallic black with the tiniest brush I had. Then cleaning that brush (because I only have one that small) and painting the gold parts. We finish with regular Silver paint to the surrounding area. The black paint was impossible to completely fill in the space, so I ended up going in with a panel liner marker. There's still tiny red spaces that went unpainted. This is some of the smallest paint applications I've ever had to do. For the wrist and ankle armor, I simply used a brown panel liner. I don't have a good brown paint, and even if I did, I think those areas are too detailed for a clean application. After the marker, the silver parts were painted in Shine Silver. This leaves us with these stickers unused. https://i.imgur.com/Qn29jvh.jpg The forearm stickers come off as the big failing of the kit. Gradients are never easy to do and these stickers don't really sell it. I thought about applying an airbrush gradient, but then I'd have to paint over it with the Silver. https://i.imgur.com/SwXYajq.jpg So what I did was poured some metallic dark blue paint into a tray, dipped the brush in the paint and applied at the base of the forearm where the color should be the darkest. Go all the way around and as the paint is drying staring to dab the brush downwards to get a fade. You want the paint to be in the "sticky" phase so it doesn't look runny and blends well into the red. It's a very short area and I would say only runs just barely past the silver spikes. https://i.imgur.com/zpsPLpK.jpg The finished kit looks amazing. I used a brown panel liner marker to detail out the hands. The purple pre-painted plastic used in this kit is very stiff and somewhat brittle. I recommend using a fresh hobby blade to trim down the nubs. The molding on this kit is pretty incredible including some very sharp parts (the horns and hand knuckles in particular). https://i.imgur.com/JwqDrER.jpg In the end I would still consider Den-O to be the best overall kit to date. If you paint your kits, Hibiki has so many organic details and shar points, that I would definitely put him in the expert range. A couple of minor cons: - Some of his wrist pegs are too long and makes his hands look like they are floating. - Doesn't come with drumsticks alone- only in hand and in holder. The sheathed drumsticks are completely cast in red plastic. - Joints are plain purple plastic - Wrist bracelets come off easily and are composed of 2 parts each, so be careful - Almost every sticker goes into a curved surface - His chest, thighs, and head seem a little on the big side. Pros: - Very stiff, holds poses well - Effect parts are excellent, definitely usable for the Figuarts - The purple parts look professionally painted! - No problems with assembly other than some sharp parts The Figure-Rise Standard line continues to impress. I look forward to each release and can't wait for Decade in December! |
Absolutely gorgeous. Stellar job!
|
Goddd that's beautiful. I'm kind of scared to get him now because I know his silver would never look as good as this!
I'm very surprised to hear about the drumsticks not being accessories. It's a very odd decision, though granted I can't think of many other things I'd want to do with them outside of giving them to Decade -- and on the plus side, it means they don't rely on the awkward holding thumb hand of previous FRSes and hence is much stronger. I wonder if this'll be the standard going forward; maybe Decade is this way too? |
Yeah I just assumed we would get standalone sticks with maybe some pegs for the hands to hold better (Hibiki's Henshin Onsa is this way), but when I think about how the sticks have that little finger loop, it makes sense why they aren't separate.
I debated doing a "dirtier" more matte silver because in my head thats what I remember it as, but its actually pretty shiny in a lot of official depictions. And ultimately if I decide I want it changed, I can add weathering on top of this paint application. I think the kit still looks good straight out of the box. The special coating treatment is a show-stealer in person. |
Today we revisit an old friend.
https://i.imgur.com/If3UkVn.jpg Kamen Rider W is easily in my top Kamen Riders for both the series and the suit design. I love the half and half gimmick and the way the show attempted to combine Showa and Heisei sensibilities. The Figure Rise Standard kit is a good one but the green has always bothered me. I've wanted to paint it for a long time but the idea of taking it apart had put me off of doing it. Well today was a chill rainy day so I went for it. https://i.imgur.com/Ay8kWWr.png Didn't get a good before picture, but the one on the right is the out-of-box green. I painted all the green parts in the new Gundam Marker metallic green (GM 174). The packaging officially calls it yellow-green which is a much better fit for W than the old metallic green Gundam marker. The silver was painted with the always fabulous Shine Silver EX01 Gundam Marker. Then a little metallic red was painted on the head crest, replacing the former sticker. I also took this opportunity to touch up the black paint around the gold parts of the cyclone side. https://i.imgur.com/jeCynOA.jpg https://i.imgur.com/I6fagQp.png I am so much happier with the way the kit looks now. It has completely obviated my desire for the Seihou figure. At this point I think Build is the only one remaining that I still wish to repaint. |
Beautiful!! The green really shines :D
|
God, that figure is gorgeous. It's my favorite kit, and you've made it better than ever. Outstanding work!
|
Damn dude, it looks beautiful!
|
I recently built a new custom mechanical keyboard themed around the king of trains himself. Ore, sanjou!
https://i.redd.it/quxrmnzsfvw51.jpg Also here is an updated image of all the main riders from the Figure-Rise standard line https://i.imgur.com/xW3tceE.jpg |
Ooh, absolutely can't wait what you can do for the upcoming FRS Decade and Ryuki!
FRS Dark Decade perhaps? |
