That is probably Riderman's fault. The original secondary Rider debuted as a character who hated the bad guys, but also had a negative impression of the hero and would initially fight both. A lot of the secondary Rider tropes we see today call back to that.

One of the things I liked about Wizard was that it inverted the standard main/secondary dynamic we had at the time. Haruto was the more serious and straightforward character while Beast was the more emotional goofball.

I agree. Goto was a really cool dude with a arc to becoming Birth. I dunno if "chill guy" is what I'd call him considering how he was early on(like firing a rocket at Eiji, for example) but he definitely mellowed out over time. Also, bold move of them to not have your 2nd Rider be fully realized until about 40 episodes in, but hey, it was pretty unique and cool, IMO.

I think this thread should be called unpopular new tokusatsu opinion to not confuse the old ones with new ones.

I don't like giant fights. When I watch Sentai I just zone out.

Actually sometimes I'm not in the mood for giant fights either. Though there's a time and a place for Sentai and you couldn't really get rid of them I kind of like how Kamen Rider is mostly ''pure henshin hero'' because I'm more interested in the concept that anyone can be a hero than a lot of giant fights which don't always do anything different. Though Go-Busters could be a bit boring I did like how they actually innovated though with things like the barrier while the mecha's forming and so on.

I was incredibly bored watching both Kamen Rider Kuuga & Agito. I'd rather watch Decade over those two because even if it was bad I was still more entertained by it than both Kuuga & Agito put together.

Having seen MMPR - Super Ninja Steel , I'm watching the Toei counterparts and in most cases some of the shows are a bit dumb. Car Ranger falls int this category for one. Cool team but an idiotic plot.

Sometimes a weak plot will nearly kill a show be it Hasbro or Toei. In both countries I've seen some dumb plots. You watch a few and like

Having not seen either of them yet or their Sentai counterparts, I honestly feel like I'm more looking forward to watching PR Samurai for the first time as opposed to starting RPM.

Ignoring how the fandom feels about both series', I just find it kinda hard to get excited for RPM since I don't like the direction it took while using Go-Onger as source material. And while Samurai doesn't look all that impressive I can atleast appreciate that it feels like it is trying to be a PR series & not trying to be something it's not ala RPM.

I'm obviously gonna give both a fair chance, I just don't view them with the same level of enthusiasm as I had hoped I would.

IDK if this is actually unpopular, but here goes:

Using the powers of previous heroes is a horrible gimmick. It makes it seem like the current hero can't stand on their own, and needs to rely on the franchise and nostalgia to be powerful within the fiction and interesting to the audience.

I'll probably watch Decade and Zi-O eventually because I'm just that invested in Kamen Rider, but my hatred of past-hero-powers kills any interest I have in Gokaiger despite loving the idea of a pirate Sentai. If Ultraman ever makes a new season that isn't built on this concept and reusing old monsters, I'll definitely give that a chance, but until then no way.

(Of course, if you like any of those shows or the concept of using powers from past heroes, more power to you!)

I won't argue with you on the gimmick stuff cause you have a point there, but nonetheless Gokaiger is a good show and I humbly ask for you to look past the gimmicks and give it a go. What really got me to like it aside from the heap of fanservice and trivia was the progression of them starting as these alien pirates who really don't have to protect Earth and just gather the rangers so they can hit the jackpot, in this case the greatest power, and get out whether the Zangyack empire is destroying Earth or not. Yet gradually they learn what it means to be a super sentai team as the show progresses and I think the final batch of episodes reflect that. Also their tsuika senshi is a sentai geek. A REAL SENTAI GEEK. Such a geek he became their silver ranger.

In my opinion, I think Zangyack is one of most boring villain group in Super Sentai.

But, at least Basco as villain is better than Zangyack and I personally prefer Basco become final villain than super duper boring Zangyack Emperor.

Takeru Satoh's acting as normal Ryotaro is so awful it genuinely makes it difficult to watch sometimes.

Look, guy is a fine actor, and I get that he has to portray a character with basically 4 different personalities, but the performance he puts on for normal Ryotaro is so horrible, it's hard for any moment to hold any weight since he always has a pseudo whisper going on, not to mention his line reading with said performance is god awful.

The Zangyack on the other hand? "Ok guys, here's the plan to invade Earth. You see these fancy warships we have orbiting around Earth? We'll just have them do nothing while we send soldiers down to Earth. It's foolproof!"

I half-agree. One of the few points I can give Super Mega Force is that I found Prince Vekar way more entertaining than Warz Gill.

I disagree that legendary powers are bad in general but I agree that heroes should stand on their own if they need to. It was brought up in Ghost when the Parka Ghosts deemed Takeru ready to stand on his own after getting Mugen Damashii but Takeru reminded them that their legacy was still important to the world and inspired him to let his life burn bright.

I think Gokaiger, while a decent but overrated show, has a serious problem with its premise. They have their own powers but they also use legendary powers even though they got them by accident and didn't do anything to earn them until character development. They got pretty much everything from the start on a silver platter. It's not like Zi-O, where Sougo is ordained and groomed to become the inheritor of all Riders, tasked with earning the trust of his predecessors so he can get their Ride Watches.

This problem was fixed in Super Mega Force however, with Legendary Ranger Mode having a time limit, encouraging the Rangers to use it sparingly and rely on their training. They were already chosen and mentored by Gosei a year before getting access to their predecessors' powers.

If Super Sentai does legendary powers again for the 50th anniversary, I would like to see it be more like Zi-O, except for confusing time travel stuff. Each Ranger could have a unique form based on a Sentai, like you could have a pink Gekiranger or a yellow Ryusoulger.

Vekar was entertaining because they exaggerated how whiny and vain he was, which brought out a lot more of what I think was always supposed to be the joke with Zangyack - they're all following the orders of a pampered brat, completely unfit for command, who is only in a position of authority through nepotism. Didn't Warz Gill have literal blue blood, even? Much like with Genis in Zyuohger or Dogranio in LuPat, there's a very justifiable reason why the villains act as inefficiently as they do, although whether that resulted in fun bad guys is, of course, up for debate. I was never a big fan of Zangyack myself.

Totally agree. Saban made the right call in dialing it up with him. In some hypothetical alternate timeline where Goseiger and Gokaiger were more traditionally adapted, I'd want them to keep the decision they made with Vekar, because it made him alot more fun(ny). Whereas Warz Gill, while I don't hate him as a villain or anything, he just doesn't do much for me due to being more understated.

Speaking of Goseiger, that's actually a really underrated season. Granted, I haven't seen much of Sentai in general, but based on stuff I'd heard about it beforehand, I went in expecting to be bored to tears. But I came out of it actually rather liking it for what it was.

I think Goseiger just has a reputation because it came out after Shinkenger, which people loved, and Gokaiger, which people also really loved, leaving Gosei still a perfectly solid Sentai, but just ignored.

Drive and Zero-One, while they have plenty of good qualities otherwise, are two series that prove to me that this franchise is not capable of writing about robots

Drive: Ok so we have a solid non evil robot, should we build up on him? Naaaah let's just kill him off in the same episode.

Zero One: This is the biggest part of the show, now let's keep it to like four characters.

I think the "Workplace Competition"-Arc, together with the "Hiden Manufacturing"-Arc are easily the best parts of Zero-One and honestly, the only Arcs better than meh.

I don’t actually like the first half of Hibiki much. It has some interesting components, but isn’t a very compelling show for me. I mean, its obviously better than the second half, but still!

On the other hand, an unpopular show I really like is Black RX. It’s such a fascinating transitional show, with both Showa and Heisei characteristics. I might even argue it’s my favorite Sentai, since it has a pretty strong team angle. I think a lot of people have a hard time with it since it follows Black, but I thought they complimented each other nicely in an odd way.

I actually LIKE Thouser alot. The way Sakuragi portrays him is fantastic as a character that should be hated. While the stuff in the job competition arc was the worst part of Zero-One, me seeing Gai just this smug motherfucker one-up Aruto every week was kinda entertaining to watch. He also has the best suit.

Him being redeemed, I'm not a fan of. But the episode didn't make me go: "Oh c'mon! Why??" I still fairly enjoyed his redemption episode especially his reaction to when he got AIBO back. I like how no one really forgave him and he's demoted to basically ZAIA's Kamen Rider lap dog, but I like that he doesn't complain, completely accepts it, and makes an attempt to work his way back up, no matter how difficult it takes.

Tho, I would've liked if they went the "Dan Kuroto" route for him. Not in the sense that he becomes a meme lord that spouts "haha funny" jokes ever second, but the idea that, while he's helping the heroes, he's still not an ally. Save him as a villain again for another movie. Tho, probably not the best idea since a lot are tired of him already.

His growth as a combatant is cool too. We see him lose a lot of fights, but the way he stood on his own against Metsuboujinrai, while losing, shows that he's slowly improving.

The only thing that really didn’t work about this character for me was that he was essentially behind everything. He created the Ark. Sure, at the end of show it becomes apparent that something like the Ark was destined to happen, if Gai hadn’t done it somebody else would've, but still - for being the guy (Ha!) who essentially has a whole lot of property damage at best and a whole lot of deaths on his hands at worst - that's a trait the character doesn't embody well at all.

I mean, the show remembers, Aruto tells him that to his face (agreed on the "redemption" part by the way, that was handled well within the show) but… for the man being excited about his robot puppy dog and wearing ZAIA boxers to have this much of a track record - I feel like he needed to be written a bit more serious.

Doesn’t take away much from the fact that he was an entertaining character with a great looking suit though.

Ex-Aid designs are awesome.

And I mean Level 1 forms, the Level 2 stuff and even the clunky Level 3. They all exude camp in the best way.

Actually, I got into Kamen Rider because of the look of the Ex-Aid Figuarts. Well, I saw Gaim's designs first and was intrigued, but it was the Ex-Aid designs that really sold me into this franchise.

Besides, I guess you could tell I REALLY love Ex-Aid just by looking at my username.

Gokaiger is one of my favorite Super Sentai Series. One of main reason I watching this series because the previous Super Sentai actors as guest stars in tribute episodes. All of Tribute Episodes in Gokaigers is really awesome!

Not all previous Super Sentai series have Tribute Episodes in Gokaiger but Gokaiger is still really cool anniversary season!

But sadly, Zangyack as villain is really boring. Even some of previous villains from Goseiger are more interesting than Zangyack in my opinion.....

Is that really an unpopular opinion? I mean, the designs weren't warmly accepted at first, but I think people grew to love them.
