No. Your typical Blu-Ray player are normally region locked and a region free Blu-Ray are not always cheap. I have seen people in both the Region 1 & 2 community that are like "Just buy a Region Player!!!" when not everyone has money on them.

Yeah, I'm looking them up now and I'm having trouble finding one that's less than £300...

If Zero-One's Blu-Rays are Region ABC then awesome, but otherwise this is definitely problematic for me

So here's the deal:

Regarding time frame of Zero-One

- No official subtitles exist
- Everything has to get approval by Toei before release
- That will tie things up considerably

I would expect Zero-One on stream this year. I would expect it on Blu-Ray *NEXT* year.

Is it Blu-Ray or DVD?

At the time of the stream Shout! Factory had not had the meeting to determine and finalize release plans for the physical media. So while all indications look to be Blu-Ray, until it's stated as such it would be premature to proclaim Blu-Ray.

Is this going to be it for the next year?

Short answer - no. Shout! Factory has more tokusatsu shows (including Kamen Rider) that they're looking at, working at, and hoping to bring over. Don't forget - they still have Super Sentai and Ultraman on stream too.

That's Toei, not Team Kamen Rider. From what I gather, Team Kamen Rider paid for the movies to be subbed and "released", then fought hard for no region blocking.

Look I understand the frustration with losing subs from subbers who take down content in an effort to support official releases, but the reality is that none of us are entitled to unauthorized subs at all. The only parties you should take umbrage with are Toei themselves and possibly those who legislate on international trade laws; not the subbers who are doing something in a hazy legal space solely out of passion.

I think you’re mistaking people being understandably frustrated with people harassing fansubbers. No-one is being unreasonable about this.

Cool that Rider is getting more official English releases. I liked... more than half of Zero-One so I would totally buy a Blu-Ray set! It had better be a Blu-Ray set.

Wow, Ryuki and Zero-One! I now feel kind of bad I watched Zero-One with fansubs just recently. Neither show is my favorite, but both are solid efforts, and being able to have more KR on physical media is *extremely* exciting to me. I mean seriously, this is long overdue. We only have V3 and The First predating this.

I do feel bad for the European folks though, but I’m sure the subs will still be around somewhere for those that need them. I feel angrier at the fact civilization has trapped itself in a hell of DRM-heavy, region locked electronics than I do at poor Shout Factory!

So Zero One blu ray is awesome, but it's understandable to be upset if you are not a US based person. Also it is 2021, you should have something that can play blu rays by now, blu ray players are not that expensive.

I can't say I'm happy about more TokuShoutsu, I was hoping they could go to an actual normal streaming site. I don't expect Netflix, but at least Crunchyroll maybe? Just something beyond a live TV network or Tubi.

I don't want to complain too much, I am grateful. It just isn't what I would have preferred.

With Funimation streaming the W anime, I wonder if that might lead to something.

Of course optimistically I'm just hoping for something with Saber and the third Reiwa Rider.

Both the original series and Kuuga are streaming on VRV under the Shout Selects label, along with every Sentai they have and Ultraman Leo.

This is awesome news by the way. I hate they had to skip Agito because Toei sold those rights to Toku (I hope it was a short contract at least). Still, finally an excuse for me to finish Zero-One once it's added.

Honestly with Funimation there's definitely a big chance that Rider will gain more and more traction in the west.

Especially if say... we decide to just plop the eventual Fuuto PI anime onto Toonami. That would definitely boost it up by a lot in terms of visibility.

Thinking about it, these are possibly two of the most interesting seasons they could have chosen in terms of what they'll do with subs.

Ryuki is a series where the original subs created something that western fandom heavily associates with a character - Asakura Ouja's "I'm vexed..." - even though that's not entirely accurate to the original script.

Zero-One, meanwhile, has a main character who does jokes and wordplay every two seconds. I remember near the start of this show people were comparing different subgroups and finding it interesting how differently different groups had translates the same joke.

Basically, it'll be interesting to see what the official subs do with this material!

I just hope that Zero-One getting a physical release means that physical versions of KR-1 and Kuuga aren't far behind.

Oh, one more interesting thing about Ryuki that some others pointed out to me -- Femme's on the poster!!

This isn't even necessarily a "all 13 Riders are there" thing, because others like Scissors and even the very significant Tiger aren't present either. I don't want to read too into a poster, but it would be odd to me for a character to be included when their only part in Ryuki is through the movie and 13 riders special, you know?

After the treatment Kuuga and the original series got, I'm sure whatever approach they take will end up being good, so I'm happy. Like, can you imagine if the people who gave us "Honshin" tried to translate an Aruto joke?

Okay, that would be *awful*, but I also would also like to travel to the alternate universe where that happened just to see it. Honshin alone made me laugh so hard I cried a bit.

If Shout are releasing stuff in the US (I know it's a different entry in the franchise, but I doubt one company are going to release one piece and then another a different one), I doubt Arrow are going to come anywhere near it for American territories.

Which is why I can't really see them tacking it for the UK either. Some distributors use Shout masters here and I'm sure vice versa occurs too, but I don't see Arrow doing that either.

Also just to clarify again most BD players are only region-free in that they're region free DVD players. For actual region-free BD players there's either crazily expensive (and hard to come by) manufactured ones or buying them from third parties that hack them and then make them region-free.

I did the latter a few years back, and mine was about £130.

Ryuki is my single favorite show of all time. I am ecstatic for it finally get an official english sub and be easily accessible.

With Zero One getting a dvd/bluray release, hopefully this does as well (as well as Faiz, Hibiki, Gaim, Fourze, W...everything lol).

Been having a think about how certain extra media for the shows Shout currently has could be distributed; and which ones I'd prioritise. I'll also say I'm assuming that movies would get separate blu-ray releases to series blu-ray releases, as I don't think it's very reasonable to think they'd happen on the same release.

Kamen Rider: This is a pretty easy one -- there's just two movies for it! Do a 2-pack blu-ray of Kamen Rider vs. Shocker and Kamen Rider vs. Ambassador Hell and you're golden. That's all you really need to do, with maybe some special features having trailers

Kamen Rider Kuuga: Uhh. Well. Hm. Not anything here, actually! This would be EVEN EASIER to do than Kamen Rider because there were never any movies or specials or follow-ups for Kuuga or anything. The absolute most there is are the HBV and the "Director's Cut" of episode 1, both of which I feel fit the bill of special features on the series discs.

Kamen Rider Ryuki: Now this is where we get to the significant stuff. Ryuki had quite a few things going on, but I don't think anyone would argue with me if I said the most significant things that absolutely must be prioritised are the Episode Final movie and the 13 Riders special, which I think would make a fine 2-pack with the special features including 13 Riders' alternate ending. Aside from this there's also the HBV - which I think Shout could get a kick out of by advertising it as a crossover with another Rider, even if it's not really - which could go on either this movie/special 2-pack or the series. There's... also Rider Time: Ryuki, but I feel that would only come when Zi-O comes around and bundled with the other two Rider Time series if at all. Either way I think it would be separate from both Ryuki releases I'm predicting here

Kamen Rider Zero-One: Oh good god jesus. Okay where do we begin? Well, alright, the most obvious place to begin clearly -- Reiwa: The First Generation and REALxTIME. Like Ryuki I think this could make for a very clear 2-pack and is definitely what I'd call the most important (as I would for the winter crossover and summer movies of any other heisei rider). Beyond that there's also 01hers: MBJR and 01hers: Vulcan & Valkyrie which I feel would also make another 2-pack, and an arguably cleaner one at that as those two obviously go together. After that though? Oh man. The HBV, The Presidents, the recap specials, those little anime shorts, that one gag battle between Aruto and Taro, Project: Thouser. Of these I guess I would say the latter is the most 'important' to include as it was marketed as backstory and context on the series compared to the others being fun side affairs, and was of course included on the Japanese Blu-Rays. The recap specials I would also call part of the series itself, so those two parts I would put on 01's main series release. The others... bit of a toss-up as to whether or not they'd be included, though I don't think there'd be a lot of fuss over them either way unless someone considers Genm vs. Thouser the pinnacle of storytelling. I think as long as they followed the pattern of prioritising feature movies and prominent specials I'd be satisfied with that

Personally, and I know for some seasons this would be easier than others, I'd just prefer everything in one go. If bonus movies/specials had to be separate releases, I'd rather they all just be in one box set based on season. I know that'd likely result in big/expensive boxes for stuff like Zero-One, Den-O(oh god), etc, but I'd rather just have to make two purchases instead of like, four or more.

I feel that way as well, but I'm trying to be realistic here. Shout's Sentai releases didn't include movies as far as I'm aware, Mill Creek's New Gen Ultraman releases included movies but that's because the series were so short to begin with (26 episodes each), and I'm pretty sure movies and specials are separate releases in Japan from the series as well.

Either way I think it would only go beyond 2 sets when it comes to V-cinema movies or truly insane series like Den-O

This is one of the reasons why I'm disappointed that Shout is doing this and not Mill Creek. I don't think Shout put any of the Sentai movies on their respective sets, but all of Mill Creek's current Ultra stuff has the films. We're even getting some of the smaller things, like the Orb web series.

I mean, the crew of Power Rangers have mentioned that Sentai movies cost extra to get the rights to. I’m not sure what the situation with Rider movies getting licensed alongside the shows is, since Dragon Knight was not only able to get footage from Episode Final into three episodes, but they featured the Verde suit in two or three episodes using all original footage.
