Yo, Ragnarok looks sick. |
I imagine the comics must be set during the first act of the show, given that they're being written for new and old fans alike. Love the design of Ragnarok!

They did say during the panel that the comics were set during a certain set of episodes in the show so certain characters, developments etc hadn't happened yet; but couldn't say much more. I think it does make sense for it to be set during either the first part of the show or the job competition arc because the later part of the show doesn't leave a lot of room for other stuff to happen
|
The artist did a solid job of adapting the Zero-One designs, although I'm curious to see how everyone looks in their civilian looks.
I'm glad this is actually set in the show and not some kind of Americanized "re-imagining" of Zero-One. Ragnarok looks interesting. I'm kind of curious what his deal is and when the story will be set timeline-wise if Aruto had to fight a major baddie in-between everything. Maybe around when he had Shining Assault Hopper. |
I love how Ragnarok manages to both be a completely original design not using suit conventions whilst also being another Shining Assault Hopper recolour. :lolol
|
The front cover got shown off on the front page, and I really hope that's not how the inside looks because Izu is straight up unsettling.
|
The official synopsis was also given.
“Aruto Hiden is Kamen Rider Zero-One! Along with his trusty Humagear companion Izu, he’s saved the world numerous times as the insectile superhero! But when his company Hiden Intelligence is attacked by the mysterious Ragnarok, Aruto must not only face the volcanic cluster cell-powered villain but also his own past…” Makes me wonder if we'll learn more about Aruto's biological parents. |
Like I get it, he's a grasshopper, but "insectile" is such an odd descriptor. I dig it.

A preview of issue one of the Zero-One comic. Warning: Minor spoilers
Gotta say, I was not expecting Ragnarok to be able to use the Flaming Tiger Key. |

I'm actually surprised they used "Henshin" and kept her name as "Izu" when it seems like they were really pushing the official localization name as "Is." Kind of wondering if there's a reason for that, other than appealing to people who watched it subbed back when it was airing. |
Honestly, keeping it as "Izu" makes sense because "Is" is a lot harder to parse as a name. Keeping "Henshin" is just plain weebery, mind.
|
Was she called 'Is' in Shout's official 01 subs?

While I understand the council (Toei/localization) has made a decision, given it's a dumb one I've elected to ignore it.
Like seriously though, this is the one time I will always push back against the official spelling. Because Izu looks better than Is. |
I like Izu better too, though it is funny that the two official pieces of media out for this series in the west are in conflict about localised names...
|
I actually liked "Is," especially once we got into the theme naming of her family of Humagear's, and I don't think it's pronounced that differently, but I know a lot of people prefer Izu.
|
There's also the fact that comics use all caps, so there's no easy way to distinguish the name "IS" from the word "IS". Using "Izu" makes things a lot easier to read.
|
Yeah Izu doesn't seem to have made the transition to comic book very well. She's a bit too emotive for a Humagear and her words don't match up with her show style. Aruto doesn't either, but that's an easier thing to accept.
|
Izu is drawn like a generic comic book superhero. Her poses and expressions are all wrong.

I would've at least gone for "President Aruto." |

Well, it's set in the actual series continuity and they are in Japan, so some honorifics would be understandable in-context.
|
I've noticed that the way people speak across the Japanese and English languages are a bit different so seeing the characters, especially Ragnarok, speak more like an American comic (I mean, yeah I get it, that's kind of the whole point) feels a bit wierd to me.
Not saying it's a bad thing, but it'll take some getting used to. |
Stonebot has recieved backlash over the shoddy product that is their release of the Kuuga manga. They have also put out a statement that can basically be summed up as them shoving their heads in the sand.
https://twitter.com/TokuNation/statu...98984837283841 Oh well. Hopefully they don't pick up the Fuuto PI manga. |

That's assuming either even get brought up for localization at all period.
And if they do, this doesn't suddenly mean Titan does all rider stuff. Seven Seas literally did a localization of Ishinomori's entire original Kamen Rider manga last year. |

Very good first steps. Stonebot's explanation for why the manga translation looks worse than the preview pages is...extremely questionable if they think what they published is what traditional manga localizations look like...but outside of that, reprinting volumes 1 and 2 with fixed translations and following that same path with 3 onward is exactly what they should be doing.
The question is how much of an improvement the new translations will be. If they're notably better and on-par to typical manga releases, that's more than fine. If they're only slightly better but not by much, different story. |
Hopefully this is it resolved and the translations going forward at least pass a bar
|
Translations that bad should never have made it to market. The fact that they even thought that would be up to par is worrisome.
|
So vol. 3 is out in the wild now, does anyone know if the translation has improved at all?
|
According to those who found it in the wild on Twitter, from what I saw anyway, the scans are cleaner with no signs of sloppy Japanese text erasure, but apparently while the translation itself doesn't read as awkwardly as the previous two volumes, it's no different from preview copies sent out to reviewers before it was seemingly delayed after the original backlash about the quality.

This whole situation with Titan has been really disappointing, between this and the absolute meme that is the Zero-One comic, the whole thing just feels so half-assed which at the point why even bother doing this in the first place if you weren't going to try. I'd love to see other Rider manga come to the west (Fuuto PI, Kamen Rider Spirits, OG Black) but hopefully someone other than Titan picks it up. |
I hope we get the KRS manga next. It's been long overdue for a US release.
|
Seven Seas picking up any other Kamen Rider manga would be the best cast scenario. The care they put into the original Kamen Rider and Gorenger collections is all the proof you'd need to know they'd treat the licenses right.
