Up until that point, I was loving the characters and the world that was being built up. All the themes about estranged youth and government run amok, apparently amounting to a blob of flesh because... Akira is Jesus? I don't know.

Also, it's kind of ridiculous to deny the impact Akira and Evangelion have had, regardless of your opinion of them. I personally think that A New Hope is the weakest out of the original Star Wars trilogy, but I can't sit here and deny that it was a landmark in genre filmmaking. The influence is self-evident.

I freaking hated Akira. Granted, I did watch the original dub and I was told that they did redub it to make it...Tolerable (As well as the subbed version probably being available now, too).

With you dude. We disagree on many things but Akira is just plain boring and awful. I don't deny it's impact but it is terrible.

Glad I'm not alone. Again, the Miyazaki films have had a huge impact on anime. I fully recognize this. But it doesn't make them any less terrible to me.

As for the topic of cooky crazy off the wall anime, i actually really like the fan service stuff like Burn Up Excess. That show was hilarious and awesome and weird all at the same time. I'm probably alone in saying that I enjoyed it but I also thought I was alone when I said I hated Miyazaki :lol

I like anime, I just don't watch a lot of them. Like everything else there are good anime and there's bad anime.

Am I the only who actually enjoys the US Robotech franchise better than the original Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada? I really enjoy that shared universe that was crafted from those 3 shows. Hell I even enjoyed the Shadow Chronicles film from 2006 and I'm eagerly awaiting that in-limbo sequel.

But I don't see what that has to do with my question. You can like a medium without liking everything that comes about in it. That's like if someone says "I like music" and you say "WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU NOT ALL MUSIC THAT GOOD!"

In fact, someone who's an enthusiast for a certain medium is more likely to be critical of any given thing in that medium. The only people who treat anime as infallible are people who legitimately believe that Japan is just a better country than all the other countries. This is, of course, ludicrous, and they are ludicrous people, but that doesn't mean that all anime fans are like that.

That's like when people come up to us bronies and say "OH, SO YA LIKE FAPPIN' TO HORSES, EH. PERVERT?"

I don't like anime overall.

The ones I did enjoy:

- Dragonball Z (yes, some slow parts, but when you step back and look at the show from start to end, the progression of the characters, the relationships that eventually build over time, it was an epic story-telling device)
- Neon Genesis Evangelion (first anime I ever watched, yes, it was a mind-fuck storywise, and that's why I loved it ... so much better than 99% of the anime available at the time)
- Ninja Scroll (the first movie, it was pretty epic, maybe because I was like 14)
- High School of the Dead (I love zombies and I thought this show did a great job of building characters, although I could have done without the BOOBS IN YOUR FACE PANTIE SHOTS that the director was very well known for)
- Blue Gender (a lot of people don't even give this one a shot because it was dubbed by FUNIMATION, but the show is actually freakin' amazing with a great story that unfolds as you move along ... and yes, it's one of those "HOLY FUCK TRIPPY ENDING" type of movies where you're mind-fucked)

That's it. I hate all other anime.

Well, High School of the Dead is an anime based on an ecchi manga, so that's not really the director's fault. It's more of the original author and artist of the manga :lol

I watch Gintama...and that's about it.

And I thought I was alone. Panty shots are one of the most annoying recurrences in anime. It's a surprise I enjoyed Bakemonogatari as much as I did.

I pretty much hate fanservice. It's why I dread any anime with a large female cast, because it's more of a counting gag rather than just normal fanservice for how often it'll inevitably happen.

It may be a gag but I could honestly care less. It's not as though it detracts from the story (most of the time). I'm cool with it.

I'm OK with panty shots in small dosages. It's the same thing with boob shots as well. If both are done with resistant then I'm happy with them.

Having panty shot overkill kept me from getting the Rosario Vampire DVDs a while back and this is coming from someone who loves the manga to death.
