So this is a little late, but I finished Godzilla Singular Point back on Wednesday and binged Shuumatsu No Valkyrie/Record of Ragnarok the day it was released on Netflix.
First off, Godzilla. Definitely better than the Polygon trilogy, fantastic animation on both fronts, the CG actually blends well with everything else. I will warn that there is a lot of scientific exposition that may go over some people's heads, don't know if that's just the fansubs or if it really is that way, but sometimes it can be a little confusing, but overall, I got the gist of it. If I have any complaints, it's that on paper, it's basically Shin Godzilla with more monsters and easter eggs, but in the end I absolutely loved it. I'll probably see it when it drops on Netflix, to see if the subs make more sense, and just because I enjoyed it. Shuumatsu No Valkyrie/Record of Ragnaraok, I first heard of it around when it was announced for Netflix, and people were really excited for it, also seeing a couple of the characters had my interest (if you're thinking about Aphrodite, you're dead wrong, pal) and because I love Mythology and Historical Figures, and because it sounded neat, I decided to watch it when it came out. And sure enough, I liked it, yes the animation was lazy in some places, but I enjoyed it overall. I have some minor nitpicks, but those aren't important. Anyway, when the Manga gets localized (because I can't find it anywhere, and it's inevitable now that it's on Netflix) I'm going to pick it up. And at least the Spring Anime seasons are ending, or at least, I have less to keep up with, so I can finally watch other shows. |
Now I don't know if I will keep this up.
But I'm working two series again which I started earlier this year but stopped for a bit because the writing bug kicked in. Currently making it my mission to rewatch all of Bleach, yes, all of it. Mostly because I told a friend while they were watching it that we'd suffer through the filler together. And a podcast I'm listening to (Chugging Bleach) is also going through all of Bleach so I might as well do it out of courtesy. Currently finished Episode 77, Bount Arc continues to roll but I got a new OP and ED so that's nice. Also working on Brave of the Sun Fighbird at the moment, got through Episode 5 and 6. Nothing much to say on it other than, and it's weird saying this given there is no actual connection between Brave Series, I miss the Geisters from Exkaiser. Like idk, there's just something about the four villains we have that isn't doing it for me quite yet. Meanwhile the insane antics of the Geisters were always a treat to watch. |
I'm actually really curious about Getter Robo... If only I wasn't so busy, I'd be watching more things like I said I would, but even so, the connection in my area is pretty spotty, so I'm not going ham.

As usual my obsession with robot toys has unearthed yet another Japanese mecha show from the 80's that I never knew existed up until now.
I watched "Panzer World Galient" from 1984 over the last few weeks. It's produced by Sunrise, and some parallels to Gundam cannot be overlooked, but it is its own thing most of the time. To get the obvious out of the way, no, there aren't any tanks in this show. Most people associate the word "Panzer" with the image of a cannon on treads, but the German word "Panzer" can also refer to "armor" or "shell" and in this case it's definitely meant to be "armor". So unlike Gundam, this show takes place in the middle-ages on the planet Arst, and it's not a fantasy setting, just medieval stuff, knights and kingdoms but no wizards or elves and such. But there are giant machines of unknown origin referred to as "Panzers" which are piloted by humans. A warlord named Mardoul has brought these machines to the battlefield and used them to quickly overthrow all of Arst and has taken complete control of the planet. The show begins with one of the last free kingdoms being overthrown; only the newborn prince of the royal family is taken to safety by a loyal knight. After a short time jump, the show follows the adventures of the teenage prince Joldy, now called "Jojo" as he and his caretaker, the knight who rescued him, search for a legendary Panzer known as "Galient" that is said to hold the power to defeat Mardoul. All of this sounds very standard, but what fascinates me about this show is that it doesn't go into the direction one might expect. After Galient is found, it doesn't magically win the war, instead it is barely enough to protect the "White Valley" where it was found and where the last free people of Arst take shelter. This is of course very Gundam-esque, right down to the name, as these episodes very much resemble the ones where Gundam protects White Base. But this is only the very beginning of what unfolds within the story, and it would be a crime to spoil it. What sounds basic quickly escalades as the scope of conflict expands beyond what anyone could expect going into this show. Needless to say, I very much enjoyed it. It's short and sweet, 24 episodes (or 2 OVA's), has some interesting characters, some cool mecha design and action, but most importantly, a great story and a surprisingly complex and unique villain. Mardoul’s motivations are... complicated. Again, I won’t spoil it, but his dreams, what makes him tick, are very much not what one would expect. And my favorite character I can't talk about at all, because her story and character is, you guessed it, too fascinating to spoil. Now, after all this teasing, where can you watch this show? Officially, I think nowhere. As I understand it, this show was never released outside of Japan and thus has not accumulated a huge following. You can't even find a good summary of the plot anywhere, but that’s not an issue: Japan received a Blu-Ray release in 2017 (I think) and as a result the show is now fully fansubbed in English, available on many "unofficial" streaming sites in glorious 1080p, I even found it uploaded in its entirety on the "You”s of "Tube"s. I can only recommend giving it a try, I really feel like I found a lost gem of mecha anime history. Right from the beginning it sucks you in, and even though it feels a bit Gundam-y at first, it quickly expands beyond being a copycat. If I haven't made you curious yet, just watch the beautiful OP and consider diving into the "Galient World": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BETVBTRCGIc |
I am currently both trying to finish Heartcatch Precure! (it'll be the first Precure show I've completed and I did make it up to episode 30-something way back in 2010!) and also after my recent discovery of just how far behind I am on Digimon, I am trying to finally finish the tri. movie-things so I can make a start on Adventure 2020! :lolol

The one anime that made us wish we had motorized inline skates. |
Just watched Zeta Gundam episode 35. I thoroughly enjoyed the original series, but this one is kind of a chore to get through. About half of the episodes feel exactly the same, with very little happening to actually move the plot forward. At this rate, I'm kind of wanting it to end so I can just get to ZZ - if Gundam is going to be this repetitive, I'd rather have something that's light-hearted and fun than super melodramatic.
Thankfully, it seems like all of the plot threads set up throughout the series are coming together, so I'm hoping things pick up from here. |
Pokemon Diamond And Pearl has shipped in on DVD for all 4 sets. Black And White 1 has released. I'll start Pokemon Black And White in summer 2022.
Also may resume Naruto Shippuden at Series VI. |
I've been trying to get into Fena: Pirate Princess, but it feels like a chore! I don't know if it's my fault or the story's fault or the execution of the story, but I'm typically left unmoved. That said, it has moments that do have an impact on me. One of those is the song which plays to superb effect in "The Curtain Rises On The Climax". However, I don't know what the name of the song is!

I'm gonna watch Bleach

I've been watching Magic Knight Rayearth and Zambot 3. Rayearth is great, but I think I over-hyped it before watching it. How could I not, though? It's magical girl/sentai meets mecha meets old school isekai meets JRPG-esque fantasy, with one of the best openings I've ever heard. It's amazing.
Zambot 3 is okay. So far, it's just a 70s super robot. Thankfully, it's only 23 episodes long, and I've heard the action picks up quickly, so I think I'll be able to get through it. As much as I love super robot in theory, they're usually a chore to get through. |
last night, I watched Promare
or as I like to call it Tengen Toppa Fire Force New Animal Darling Franxx |
I might watch the rest of Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon. Starting Sailor Moon R

Darkside Blues (1994) - I only remember seeing this anime once on VHS when I was a kid, and I barely remember what happens. I went into this anime expecting it to be an underappreciated gem. To be honest, it's a decent film. Although the animation in Darkside Blues is excellent, the story is disappointing in my opinion. The animation is incredible, and I adore the film's dark tone. Despite his lack of involvement, it has the feel of a Yoshiaki Kawajiri film. It has lovely dark shading, and I like how dark colors are used. The backgrounds are extremely well-detailed, and the character movement is incredibly fluid. The soundtrack for the film is composed by Kazuhiko Toyama (Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII), and it is very well done in my opinion. The film's melancholy tone is perfectly captured by the music.
Darkside Blues has a great premise, but the characters ruined the movie for me. None of them piqued my interest, and I had trouble caring about what was going on. The DVD quality of the film has aged terribly, and an HD remaster is urgently required. When an HD remaster is released, I can see myself enjoying it even more with a better mindset. Also, the English dub for this film sucks. I was unable to find the Japanese version, so I was stuck watching the English dub instead. I recommend staying away from the English dub. Overall, Darkside Blues is an average film that I only recommend if you're interested in seeing it. Rating: 6.5/10 |
I inexplicably started watching Android Kikaider: The Animation and it already looks very interesting so far.

Naruto Shippuden Series VI
Oruchimaro had tried to renimate himself but Sauske had stopped him and gained control. Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon R - Starting Once I finish episode 52 on Hulu I'll watch the rest on DVD as my set is full screen. |
Now that I have free time again and the current arc is ending (or ended, for manga readers), I decided it's time to hop back on One Piece. It's been so long, I've missed it.

I just finished the WCI arc, so I'm in the late 800s. A little bit further than you, but still not caught up :lol I'm going to wait a bit longer before moving on to the next one. |
Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon R (Episode 16)
I just got to Chubi's entry in the 90s series. |
Working on some One Piece and I'm on the Punk Hazard arc, but it leaves me perplexed all because of one thing: what or how does Ceasar Clown's Gastanet attack work!? It looks like a cheap plastic clapper, so how exactly is it setting off gas explosions?
