While I doubt we'll ever see a military theme again (Least I got Bruticus from transformers for that) I'm sure we'll see ancient civilizations and a sphinx again someday. |

Y'all are breaking my heart here. Shinkenger is one of those shows you just aren't allowed to NOT like in my book. It's awesome and action-packed and dramatic and funny and most importantly has buckets of heart. I try to respect differing opinions, but I can't even begin to imagine how anyone's reaction to a show so wonderful could be anything worse than mildly positive. |

Has anyone here seen Goggle V? I'm currently up to episode 12 and, while I like the show well enough, I can't help but feel as though its sorely lacking in, you know, the rangers actually mentoring and bonding with their child sidekicks. I want to watch a bit more of the show before I start complaining about it too much but I'm still interested in hearing how other people feel about it.

So I'm watching Power Rangers Mystic Force, and either I somehow missed a few episodes, they are out of order on the Shout Factory DVDS, or they made some plotholes by starting things from Magiranger but not finishing them. I was watching one episode and the formed the Megazord, and I thought "Isn't this the first time they fully formed the megazord? I'd have at least a comment about that." Then Koraag steals the megazord magic. Next episode they form the megazord just fine with no mention of the power being stolen. Then I get to the fight with Morticon, and the Red Ranger is taking about combining with catastros again and I was thinking "When did you combine with the horse the first time?"
So am I missing something, or did they just not care? |
The Shout DVDs are out of order?

Yeaahh. Already finish Shinkenger and it was kinda good series :)
now want to watch Timeranger |
Finished Power Rangers Mystic Force. Not bad. Did focus a little too much on Nick as it got to the end though. Phineies was surpisingly good and nuanced for a guy who seemed like he'd be comic relief early on. Poor Madison never really got an episode that was "her" episode." Also that thing with her and Nick seemed to come out of nowhere at the end.
Really liked the Ten Terrors, wish their arc had been a few episodes longer. Well got Lost Galaxy on order, so in a week or two I'll start that. I actually watched all of that one back in the day, but this time I'm going to be smart and blog the series as I watch it. |
Hey, what do you get when you let several months worth of movies and specials pile up before watching them in one go? That's right kids, it's a Zyuohger quadruple feature!
Zyuohger the Movie - I tend to think most Sentai summer films are both very enjoyable and very forgettable, and, fitting for a series that's basically the ultimate "default" Sentai, Zyuohger's own attempt nails that feeling perfectly. I had a good time watching it, but there's not a lot to it, and I probably won't remember much about it a week from now. Zyuohger VS Ninninger - About average for a VS movie. The chemistry between the teams is pretty nice and brings to mind Carranger VS Ohranger, which I loved, but outside of that not much left a big impression. I am fond of what they did with Takaharu though. His personality is on point the whole time and the idea of his son from the future caps off his development from the show quite nicely. Zyuohger Returns - Definitely the highlight of the bunch for me. One thing I'll say upfront is that you'll be disappointed if you were hoping for any kind of serious, gritty look into the potential civil unrest caused by Zyuohger's finale. Things seem to be mostly going pretty great, and the focus here is on what the team are up to. On that front, I think it seriously delivers, tying up plenty of loose ends in the form of a somewhat stock but nevertheless entertaining tournament plot. If Misao was your favorite character from the show, I think you'll absolutely adore this one. Super Doubutsu Taisen - Being a goofy extraneous thing, I had pretty much no expectations going in, so I was actually pleasantly surprised how fun it was. It starts off looking like it'll be pretty boring, but just gets more and more delightfully crazy as it goes on. |
Finished Maskman a few days ago and yeah, it's a Showa sentai alright. Had some nice fights here and there but felt kinda bland for the most time. Not to mention that Galaxy Robo kinda sucked.
Currently 4 episodes into Carranger and I'm really liking the goofy designs of the villains and their rides so far. |
Yeah, I am not a fan of Maskman at all, which sucks because I wanted to be a fan of it. I love their suits.
Anyway, I couldn't fall asleep last night so I watched the first two episode of Goggle V. They were pretty decent. This is the only Sentai series I know absolutely nothing about, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I got a laugh that the "Good" science guys have their own child slave force. :lol It was also hysterical when the red ranger says, "This truly is evil science" when a giant Air Man looking bot appeared. All I'm hearing whenever they say evil science or dark science is, "GERMAN SCIENCE IS THE GREATEST SCIENCE IN THE WORLD!" I do hope they cut down on the time they show the mech transforming and stuff. |

Yeah, my biggest criticism with 80s Sentai is that the characters are barely ever developed. There are often times when they never really tell us why the rangers were chosen to be rangers like in Dynaman and Changeman. Okay cool, they have been given powers and were chosen, but why? What is so great about these specific individuals thay they were the ones chosen to save the world?
Why is the pink ranger in Dynaman afraid of cats? They show that she is scared of them, but they never tell us why. How any people did Biorobo actually scan? They only showed us five people being scanned, but since the second yellow exists, there were more, right? Did Biorobo just scan hundreds of people with the particles? Or did he just decide to scan a sixth person because reasons? Come to think of it, this is probably another reason why Jetman is so loved. People on here might not understand it, especially the love for Guy, but coming off the 80s Sentai with generic one dimensional good guys, a morally gray character like Guy was revolutionary. |
The missing background of the rangers isn't as much bothersome in my eyes as the boring action, especially the mech figs, which could have easily been left out in certain episodes and leave more place for actual plot. Zyuranger had some bland heroes but could make up with interesting mech fights.
As for 80s shows, at least Liveman kept me on the seat with a solid cast in the first half and Sun Vulcan with its cheesiness. I do have some hopes for Flashman and Dynaman and I'd like to check these out once they're fully subbed. |

I also liked the first three Liveman cast members, but the show really ran out of ideas for them before the halfway point. Adding in Black and Green was a terrible idea though as I found them to be uninteresting and brought the show down quite a bit. Dynaman has been fun thus far. I really wish MFC would finish it up soon so I can see the rest as I have been enjoying it a lot. The cast might be bland, but the show has a lot of energy to its name and I swear the reason Bioman barely had any cool explosions was because Dynaman took up the budget for both shows. DynaBlack is my favorite of the group (who is also in Blade and Kyoryuger). I've only seen the first 20 episodes of Flashman raw as I own the DVDs, but it seemed cool from what I recall. |
I watched episosdes 3-8 of Goggle V and there's been good things and bad things. I've been fairly entertained thus far, but it has its gripes. I don't like how pink and black don't even do anything during the mech battles. In fact, they pretty much just disappear so Red, Yellow, and Blue can combine and beat the monster. Granted, it's not like the mech battles are even remotely good, but it still sucks that they are sidelined.
The rangers are pretty bland too, but like I said, they have been entertaining episodes so I'm able to forgive them. Plus, I'm still in the first quarter of the series, so we'll see where things go from there. Oh, I have to say that I can not help but think of the words "BOMBARDMENT" whenever Goggle Yellow (and sometimes the rest) attack the villains with dodge balls. :lol |

Don't forget the bowling pins. :lol
I'm actually going to be making a great joke about the hula hoop when I review this series, laughing at it and then cutting to a scene of Tira from Soul Caliber IV. |
Maskman Episode 32: Man did I love this episode. The episode starts out as kind of a sad story about one of Kenta's friends losing the will to race but it quickly dissolves it what could best be describes as an episode long road trip starring Kenta, who's tied with Akira as my favorite Maskman, the kid of the week, and a crappy car that was quite literally falling as Kenta drove it. Seriously, at one point in the episode, Kenta had to literally get out of the car, pray to it so that it would keep driving, and jump back it when it starting driving off without him. This was all while he was him and the kid were being pursued by Oyobu, who takes off one of the car's doors. This was a hilarious episode.
Episode 33: This was a weird episode. I didn't dislike it exactly but I'm not really sure what the point of it was. The entire episode was dedicated to a character that, while not bad in theory, was completely pointless as the entire reason for her existence is to tell us that Kiros is an asshole... something we've know since the beginning. While they kind of tried to make it a lesson for Takeru about what love can do to you if you aren't careful, it ultimately feels very hollow since he not only had very little actually involvement in this story, this in no way reflected the relationship he has with Mio. While I can kind of see an episode like this working very early in the show, in fact I pretty sure there kind of was, Takeru has long since grown past that stage of his character. |
So you watched 32 and 32? o_O
Have you gotten to the episode with Akira going to Mortal Kombat island? |
Quote:
Ya, I've seen that one. I don't really remember it all that much, there's a bit of a gap between the time I watched the first 29 episodes or so until now, but I do remember that Akira was a complete badass in that one. I also remember swimsuits. That's not an important detail, outside of the fact that they swam to an island when they could have flown, but I like swimsuits so... It has also occurred to me that we know more about Akira's backstory alone then at least half of the other team member combined. That's not a complaint or anything like that I just find it odd that he was the one singled out. |
Yeah, Akira is the only ranger in the show I even liked as he was the only one who seemed to be developed throughout it.
|
The partners and I decided to start watching Kyoryuger, and so far they're digging it. It's fun watching th BF's reaction since he'd watched Dino Charge before this.

I'm fine with characters not having a deep backstory or developing or anything like that but these guys are just so bland and lacking in any unique characteristics. That being said, I really like Kenta. Just as much as I like Akira in fact. His character, while pretty simple, is one that I enjoy very much and I tend to find his focus episodes very entertaining to watch. |
I have mixed feelings on that. I feel that a 50 episode series has no excuse not to go into backstories and develop their cast, or at least half of the cast.
Changeman has had by far the weakest characterization of any Sentai show out there. I wanted to like them, but there wasn't much to grasp. The pink ranger ended up with Disney Princess-itis by falling in love with a man seconds after she met him and then he never showed up again throughout the show. |

In her defense, that's a pretty common Toku trope for both genders, especially before the 2000s. Love interests in Tokusatsu almost never mean anything in the long run, no matter how important they are in the episode itself. |

So I watched Shout!'s stream of Megaranger today which ended up being a mess. The episodes were cropped into 16x9, there were constant feeze ups, but most of all, they didn't have any of those live segments they did with Kakuranger, which was a let down. Yeah, they had that Shamus dude do some voice overs in trivia, but it just wasn't the same without a group there talking about the show.
|
I watched episodes 9-15 of Goggle V today. The ninth episode was pretty cool with an Edo period styled village. However, the ending had the rangers take a child with them so he could see the world and then he was just gone in the next episode. They didn't even mention him at all. I hate when they do that! -_-
The next few were pretty much standard fair, but the last one brought in a new general who just disintegrated two of the villains like they were nothing. What a waste. They didn't even get to go out with a bang. So far I'm still enjoying the show, I just wish it could live up to the full potential it has. Except for the mech battles, those continue to be snoozefests. |
I just finished up Gingaman recently and i didn't like it going it at first but i really grew to enjoy it. it got a lot more interesting for me once Black Bull showed up and it made me put the other two Sentai i was watching on the back burner to focus on it (The other two being TimeRanger and GaoRanger)
|
Yeah, Gingaman starts out a bit slow but the moment Sanbash is removed from the board it gets good. Can't wait to finally watch it subbed next year.
|
It was weird seeing Sasuke back as Hyuuga in Gingaman i didn't notice it at first but after awhile i saw the similarities
Out the ones I've watched from start to finish i would have to say my favorite right now is Kakuranger i felt like it has had a more pleasing finale than some of the others like Dairanger and Zyuranger |
Just watched discs 2 and 3 of Mega. A lot of great stuff here, but I really wish Shout! could figure out how they wanted to spell Hinelar's name. Sometimes he's Hinelar, other times it's Hineler. It's Zechs Merchise/Merquise/Marquise all over again. :lol
|
i was watching some of OhRanger today since i decided to go ahead and finish up it and Carranger. and i can't help but think of how over powered King Pyramider is i thought Mighty Shogun was OP"d but hell Pyramider blows Mighty Shogun outta of the OP'd water
|
Do not live in US and difficult to get the Shout's Super Sentai content. However I am currently watching Shinkengar in between of Kamen Rider. Might rewatch Gokaiger or Boukenger after I finish off with this.
|
So I decided to try Kakuranger again. A bit of backstory: I started Sentai with Zyuranger a couple of years ago, and all of the Power Rangers nostalgia practically smacked me in the face. I absolutely loved it. After finishing Zyuranger, I tried watching both Dairanger and Kakuranger. I hated Dairanger, and was bored of Kakuranger. Why? At the time, all I wanted was more Zyuranger.
Anyways, I don't really know what it is. I think between being stuck on Zyuranger for so long, seeing newer Sentai and how bland and formulaic they can be, and getting into Kamen Rider, my interest in Sentai basically dropped down to zero. Well, I've found myself in the mood for some old school toku, and after visiting Japan this summer and seeing a ton of temples and shrines, I've also been wanting to watch something themed around traditional Japanese culture and mythology. On top of that, the anime Ushio and Tora made me want more youkai action. So I decided to give Kakuranger another chance, and let me tell you, I already absolutely love it. Now that I'm not expecting another Zyuranger, like when I first tried watching it, it's easy to appreciate what this series is and what makes it unique. I've missed old school sentai, and this is a great return to it. I can't wait to watch more. |
