The amount of ass Omegamon kicks in X-Evolution just makes me wonder how Dynasmon and Crusadermon/LordKnightmon/LoadKnightmon got reduced to Lucemon's bitches in Frontier...
|
So I watched the first episode of Digimon Savers.
It feels like I just watched 5 episodes. Jeez, slow down a little. Yes yes yes, characters have to be introduced, and because it's a shonen series, there has to be some action, but I didn't remember Agumon evolving in the first episode...For an intro, it tried to do way too much in far too little time. What stood out to me: Masaru is kind of hitting every check for the brash action hero. I do not like that. Yoshino's voice actress is gawd awful. I have no idea what DATS is trying to accomplish with Masaru. Anyway, this beginning sucked. |

I'm not going to recap every episode I watch, but I will post about Savers when something sticks out to me in some fashion. So I just finished episode 2.
I just realized that Geogreymon and (So far) the entirety of Lalamon's evolution line's voice acting sucks. Geogreymon's VA sounds bored and anti-climatic, and Lalamon's high pitched voice just...Blah. Also, it really annoys me when an anime designs a mother character who looks like she's in high school. This isn't a strike against Savers in particular, but it just really dislike when they design mothers who look like they can be the main female protagonist with how young they look (Here it's seriously an issue though. Unless she had Masaru when she was flipping 6, she looks way too damn young). Right now an issue I'm having is evolution. In Adventure, they only evolved after establishing a bond with their partners to literally show their growth as friends. In 02, they literally couldn't evolve for the first half, and used the DigiArmors marked with the symbols of the previous characters to evolve, typically in a 'passing the torch' moment for the new cast. In Tamers, they could only evolve during a moment of great duress, putting their human partner in danger, but also after establishing enough of a connection similar to Adventure. In Frontier, they had to at least prove themselves and find the armor. Here? You wanna evolve? Then just evolve. Kind of kills what made it special... |
first of the beast king is the best digimon move.

10 episodes of Savers down. 38 to go. I also think there's a movie or special, but we'll deal with that later.
Anyway, it's a little dull. The MOTW format is uninteresting, but I'll be fair and not hold that against Savers in specific since damn near every series does that (Tamers included). My issue with it is that the fights they feature are rather dull to watch. Sometimes we'll get GeoGreymon tossing a Digimon around before finishing it off, or Gaogamon doing one of his token attacks before reverting back to Spiral Blow, but overall, it feels like there isn't much to enjoy action wise. The relationship between Digimon and human is rather interesting, though. I like that the Digimon aren't just malicious because shut up, but they actually aid the humans they meet in some manner. It makes the characters a little more interesting in how they utilize the Digimon for their gain in some way. My only issue is that the Digimon who actively help the humans are treated as mindless animals driven by instinct, and the Digimon who can speak and are treated as sentient are either the partners or show no desire for anything beyond "Destroy stuff because shut up." However, to be entirely fair, I am only 10 episodes in, and the main story arc has yet to begin. But to be unfair, these introductory 10 episodes have done little to hold my interest. Masaru hasn't gone through any sort of change, Tohma has a problem with Masaru for 2 episodes, and now they're buddy buddy, Yoshino still doesn't get to do anything, and the Captain feels like they don't know what to do with him (His demeanor and attitude feels like he's the stoic, quiet leader who makes wise decisions and everyone respects, but his actions and decisions makes him feel like the "Hot blooded" leader who acts before he thinks). |

FINALLY got to watch episode 15 (And 16), and, well...I'm not really feeling it.
It is definitely picking up, don't get me wrong. Merukimon's entrance was great, but recently all he's done is sit on his ass and just shrug whenever our cast do anything. Ikuto is interesting. Actually, lemme change that. I hate this kid. I hate this kid so much. Anyway, I'll stick with it, since it's picked up since the first 10 episodes. |
Finished the first 20 episodes (And 21). A lot happened, but, curiously, it was all rather uninteresting.
I think my issue is that I don't have any draw to Ikuto, so all this focus on him makes it hard for me to really enjoy it. That said, I don't dislike the current story or the character anymore, but I'm more interested in his arc ending more than anything else. PawnChessmon's partners are really annoying. I do not like them. And mysterious man opens Digital Portal and sucks away Gotsumon's army. Curious. |
Butter-fly is still one of the best anisongs in my book.

Well, finished episode 30. 20 or so more episodes to go.
A lot happened, and now I'm actually invested. Huzzah. We got to see Kudamon evolve twice, so that's pretty cool. Shame the first time was just a quick glimpse, and the second time he lost the fight. Our heroes finally hit Ultimate (Mega) form (Sans Ikuto, but I'm sure his is coming up soon, since it appears in the new opening). New Bio Digimon, which are pretty neat (And a lot more interesting than the Gizumon). A new ally in the form of BanchoLeomon, and the story is progressing nicely. It doesn't feel like it's moving too quickly or drudging along as it was earlier. Things are looking nice, and I'm starting to enjoy it now that the universe stopped revolving around Ikuto. However, a big issue I'm having is with Kurata. His plan I understand, and his reasoning I can see. But the problem is that he's delightfully evil, and it's dull. It's like taking Tamers's Yamaki and turning him into the Joker. He has an evil laugh after every sentence, he takes joy in mass genocides, and he toys around with the others. It's so black and white that it's hard to like him. I would much prefer if they toned him back. His ideals are in the right spot, but unlike being merely extreme in his desire to protect the real world, they chose to make him unlikeably evil and malicious so that there is no doubt about him being blatantly bad. And yes, I know. Shonen anime and blah blah blah. But the problem is that the last villain, Mercurimon, was a lot more of a grey villain, who acted in the defense of his world. So to go from that to Kurata is rather dull... Quote:

I remember it from the tune, because the German version used the same melody with translated/new lyrics in German. Was pretty awesome. |

Yeah I do give the US-version credit for making something entirely new (and the beat is kinda catchy) but I'm happy we got the original songs with good dubs.
|
Decided to watch all of the movies I've not gotten around to, starting with Revenge of Diaboromon.

(But nothing can beat the original movie! Loved the final fight scene where Tai and Matt's Digimon: WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon DNA Digivolve into Omnimon and fight the Digimon virus. It was amazing and such a powerful moment!) |

I decided to watch the dub for it since I'm familiar with those voices and all I could find was a rip of the Toon Disney broadcast. |

Okie dokie lokie. While I haven't finished the next 10 episodes, I feel like making a post since a significant event happened.
So, episode 38 (I've seen 39, but that was just a clip show except for the ending). A lot has happened, and it was...Interesting. So Belphemon is introduced, awakened, and then killed in a rather short span of time. I don't like that. Granted, I know they did foreshadow him a lot earlier and kept him silhouetted, so it's not like they shoved him in last second, but it's just that for a character they built up, he was defeated a little too easily (Especially after establishing that he almost wiped out the Digital World (Granted with 6 others, but they played up his threat levels a lot)). Still, Belphemon was adorably evil in Sleep Mode, and looked pretty cool when awakened. The fight was pretty nice, but they made an error in having Belphemon no sell everything at first, but then, even after powering up, he was stunned and stalled by Perfect (Ultimate) level Digimon attacks. It was jarring for RookChessMon's attack to make him roll his eyes (So to speak) at first with how useless it was to making him flinch back in damage the very next episode... Anyway, huzzah. Kurata bit the dust. I'm so, so glad. I enjoyed his well intentioned extremist point of view (Even though I despised his Joker/Carnage/Psycho attitude at doing so), but then they stopped holding back and made him literally want to take over the world. I'm glad they didn't keep him around long enough after that. Now then, Royal Knights. Here's hoping it's good. |
Got through Battle of Adventures this afternoon too.
Eh. It had its moments I guess. |

Runaway Locomon is pretty fun~
Anyway, getting closer to the end of Savers, but current events in series has made me pause for now because it's pissing me off. Why are the Royal Knights always villainized? Seriously? They're labeled as a group created to defend the Digital World, yet whenever they appear, they're always the bad guys... Also, no. That was not Dukemon/Gallantmon. Dukemon isn't some blindly loyal asshole. "But the Dukemon in Tamers isn't the same Dukemon that's a Knight." The Dukemon I saw in X-Evolution openly doubted his orders and, upon seeing the destruction and death first hand, turned against Yggdrasil. Here he's just some bitch that nods and does whatever he's told. He is not the Dukemon I know. Anyway, irony struck me as my least favorite Knight, at least in design, Cranniummon, turned out to be my favorite in series because he isn't a gigantic asshole. |

It does suck and seeing them in a proper heroic role would be great. |

I swear. One of these days the Knights will finally be shown in a good light, and everyone will be like "Wait, what? Aren't the Royal Knights villains? Why are they helping the heroes?!" |

That would not suprise me. |
