Bad timing hurt the movie if you ask me. They release it in March when the Beauty and the Beast was out in theaters. The 1995 MMPR movie had a similar issue when you had movies like Batman Forever and Pocahontas out around the same time. So kids end up seeing those movies instead.

Bear in mind that toy sales are also relevant.
Perhaps if Bandai sees that the movie toys sold like gold, even if they only make $145 million, the toys might be able to convince studios to produce another movie.

Yup, strong toy sales are the reason we keep getting Transformer movies after all and strong toy sales keep Sentai going despite falling TV ratings.

Not to mention there's still the release of the Blu-Ray coming out next month which would help in boosting sales.

Toy sales also help G.I Joe: Rise of Cobra. I still feel like they should have pick a better release date like maybe August.

$1.2 million opening day and only $3.3 million for the whole weekend in China.

Failure or no failure Japan is slowly hyping up the film for their July release it seems. They just had a voiceover demonstration with Ryo Katsuji who plays Jason, Alice Hirose who plays Kimberly, and Ryota Yamasato woh plays Alpha 5. Yamasato's recent tokusatsu appearance was in Ninninger vs ToQger as the featured villain of the movie.

Apparently Power Rangers are the #1 toy selling brand thanks to the movie!!

Why do I find that so hard to believe?

Well toy sales help G.I Joe 2 got made, so it is possible that we could see a second PR movie. Just have the movie be release during a better month. I still think Lionsgate releasing the movie in March was a bad idea.

I can't speak for all TRUs, just the two closest to me, but they do seem to be selling.

I'm seeing less and less boxsets of the Megazord and I'm seeing a lot of the Legacy movie figures sell out, especially Jason. Complete sets are going for nearly $200.00 at times.

The only things I see that could be considered stragglers are the single pack Zords and the roleplays.

Heck, even Ninja Steel Megazords are selling and that dumbfounds me even more.

TV shows and movies aren't the same thing.

The movie practically flopped. Toy sales aren't going to help much in that regard, as ticket sales are more important than toy sales. TV shows don't make money directly, which is why toy sales are more important for them.

Will the movie have a sequel ?

We don't know for sure, but as of now it doesn't look like there will be a sequel. Made back it's budget, but we don't know how much of the marketing budget was left out of the publicly known number. Toy sales could be a potential factor, but I doubt it'll make a difference.

Which is sad, because I was really hoping this would get a bunch of sequels...

Japan has not released it in theaters but yeah... I'm not too optimistic.

I found conflicting info on when Japan's premiere was, so I didn't mention it. For it to have an effect, the movie is going to have to be a HUGE success in Japan. That said, no matter how much more it gets, I have the feeling that Saban will be gun shy when it comes to any discussion of doing a sequel.

I guess I'll just have to dive deep into the comics, and maybe get some of the other past seasons, for my PR kick. Barring a major change in staff at Saban, none of their new shows are going to be worth watching... imho anyways...

Hello! I'm new here, but I LOVED this movie, it's easily one of my favorite movies, it even got me back to pursuing Kamen rider stuff after Fourze finished! (was watching it as Megamax came out thanks to Over-Time.)

You can try in Space, Time Force and RPM. Those three seasons generally have good character developments.

Whatever you do, don't jump to RPM first. All other seasons kind of pale in comparison next to it. It's probably the absolute best of all the seasons produced, thus far.

Could the movie being well received in Japan ?

in space, time force and RPM? I remember when RPM's toys were on shelves and eveything I saw was "the worst of power rangers ever!" and I was under the understanding it was what killed off the franchise until Megaforce.

The franchise died after RPM because Disney didn't give a crap about the series at that point. They stuck it in an awful time slot, and there was little to no advertising for it.

However, after having watching RPM myself, I can say that it is one of the best seasons that the show has had.

^ This. Not only was it well acted, which is nothing short of amazing, but the story was completely solid. It had realism (for what you can get out of Power Rangers), it was serious for most of the episodes, it was dark and heck, there's even a prison fight. Yes, you read that right, a prison fight.

On top of that, human KIDS are kidnapped by the villain and turned into cyborgs. (Think Star Trek: TNG Borg)

The villains had ridiculous voices and their actor suits were absolutely silly because, you know, Sentai, but forgivable in the big picture. A completely solid season.

Disney dropped the ball with their handling of this one.

I heard that the reason RPM was able to be written the way it was is because Disney was pretty much ready to take it out of their roster so they gave the staff more creative freedom with it compared to the other Disney seasons. Correct me if I am wrong.

They must be really investing some good money hiring a good number of high-profile voice actors for Zack, Billy, Trini, and Rita.
After hearing it on the Japanese official website(http://www.power-rangers.jp/) I think they are all spot-on.

That previs fight was cool, I would love if they finished the scene CGI and gave it as a deleted scene on the discs, or put it back in.

also, that dubbing cast sounds good, I hope the movie does well in japan, but I worry it may be a bit too slow paced for a ranger movie.

I am just more surprised that they got Nana Mizuki. That is like getting Tara Strong to voice Raptor for the Power Rangers adaptation of Kyuranger.

True that. This film is a gold mine for Japanese voice acting geeks. Heck they even got Sawashiro in the mix.

The director blames the PG-13 rating for the movie which makes no sense since stuff like G.I Joe, TMNT, Marvel & DC Superhero movies, Godzilla and Transformers did fine with a PG-13 rating. Big budget live action PG movies are normally doom to fail.

Three reasons for why the movie may have flopped

1. Mixed Word of Mouth

2. Poor marketing seeing that the trailers and TV spots give people mixed feelings

3. Bad timing since the movie came out the same month as Beauty and the Beast. The same thing happen with 1995 movie when it came out the same month as Batman Forever and Pocahontas.

A sequel's being talked about? That's optimistic

So checked the news and it says Japan had its premiere for Power Rangers. Dacre Montgomery and Naomi Scott participated with director Dean Israelite alongside the Japanese dub cast(sans Sugita, Mizuki, and Sawashiro, Billy, Trini and Rita's voice). Then for some odd reason they later got Antonio Inoki to appear and POWER SLAP Yamasato the comedian who does the Japanese dub of Alpha 5 it seems.
