The Digimon Movie got made because the Pokemon movie was a huge hit and Digimon was popular when it was airing on TV. Saban was like "If Pokemon can do well in theaters, so can Digimon!". It's like how the Doug movie was released in theaters because the Rugrats movie did so well.
I knew about the Digimon Movie coming out as a kid because one anime magazine was promoting it. I knew about the other two movies from Japan because I would go to collector shops as a kid and one Japanese collector shop that I would always vist had new Digimon stuff being imported before the US got it. (I also used the Internet at home to find this stuff as well). I was lucky enough to own some Japanese Digimon toys and cards that would be imported. |
So here's a random question. Digivolving Spirits Nanimon or Digivolving Spirits Numemon. Which would you rather buy.

Your original question was more interesting, I'd buy an articulated Nanimon, in all of its veiny, hairy weirdness. |

Since Detective Pikachu did well, do you think Hollywood will try to do a live action Digimon movie?
|
I doubt it, the series just doesn't have as much recognition with the general public as pokemon does and the series just doesn't lend itself to a movie as well as pokemon does.

Any franchise could become successful. Marvel took Iron Man, a B-tier hero for non comic readers, and made him the face of the franchise, something thought impossible considering the dominance of Spider-Man and Wolverine.
The problem with the Digimon story is just that there isn't one that lends it to a movie. Digimon is about the adventure through the strange and surreal Digital World. With only 2 hours, you'd just end up with another one of those lame "Portal to another world" movies like Smurfs or Beastmaster 2. The more self contained Digimon stories have the problem of relying on the audience already being large enough fans to know what is going on beforehand, such as X-Evolution. Pokemon is a franchise where the, in their set world, Pokemon have co-existed with people for millennia. Digimon, meanwhile, were canonically created in, like, 1992, and to most of the world, they're one massive secret that they're real, thus requiring time of the film to establish what they are. As a live action film, Digimon just doesn't work since they can't just jump into it like Detective Pikachu. |
If they do a live action Digimon movie, they could do their own original story or adapt one of the video games that does not have a Japanese setting. If we get a Hollywood version of Adventure 01, there is going to be a big issue with the casting.
