just finished "Act 1" of shinkenger, is the only they didn't copy in samurai is the guys in black robes and the zord cockpits? other than that its the same thing with different actors :lol
|
Yup, Samurai was pretty much just a watered down Shinkenger with worse actors. Don't let that put you off though, Samurai skipped over a lot of good episodes and all of the characters are vastly superior to their Samurai counterparts.
About from maybe Dokouko, who's exactly the same :lol |

To answer Brainchilds previous question, you should really hit up Dekaranger. I think Switchblade and ZeoRangerV will agree with me that its a great show. Every episode Ive seen so far has been fun and interesting. Its much better than I think its given credit for. Each character is actually interesting for once, though Tetsu is a little one dimensional. |
Dekaranger is amazing. Its a quirky series that can be both fun and serious, doesn't follow some of the usual conventions of Super Sentai and has great designs and characters. I don't think I could recommend it any higher.

I doubt it was gonna get a second season, but apparently Japan just loved Sun Vulcan. |

Well, I just finished Gekiranger. Overall, that was a great show, even if it took a little while to pick up. Rio and Mele were some fantastic villains. I didn't like Long so much, simply for how little they explained about his origins or why there was a secret JyuKen technique meant for him. Still, great watch.

Act 13 of Shinkenger
Finally an episode that wasn't copied for samurai! It was pretty good, being the first episode my mind couldn't ruin by reminding me of Samurai :lol, I really hope they have an original story with megaforce and don't repeat what they pulled with this series |
Act 14 of Shinkenger
Wtf. a wannabe samurai asks Ryuusoke for help? They had this one episode, yet, they waste half of Samurai on the same idea for Bulk and Skull, sorry Spike! Why didn't they just use the one episode for the wannabe samurai? I thought at least that idea with bulk and sku- spike was orginal, I should've known better by now. |
Act 15 of Shinkenger
the monster poses as Chiaki, while that would've been a cool episode for samurai, I kinda like how it was skipped, what did Saban just skip 3 whole episodes in a row or something :lol. also, for some reason, I like ryuusoke and chiaki a whole lot better then I do kevin and mike, might be they can actually act, or the samurai guys sucked so bad they make shinkenger look amazing! |
I'm at episode 25 of Abaranger. Still liking this series and Yukito joins the list of those that cross dressed. Plus he just got bitch slapped by Emiri, I guess this is where their relationship sorta started. Abare Killer seems to just play mind games on the Abarangers.
Also finished Epic 25 of Goseiger. I like the look of the power-up, it looks bulky but seems to work well. By the way Epic 23 was a weird episode. It was funny but weird. Anyway I read somewhere that Rika Sato/Gosei Pink quit the industry. It said that she left her agency and just went MIA. Kinda like Yellow Four 1, left Bioman never to be heard of again. |
Up to episode 40 of Deka, wherein DekaBright shows up to teach Tetsu the rules for the latest round of the Gegeru. She was pretty cool, but I found it odd that her suit is more of a vinyl fabric than the standard spandex.
|
Act 16 of Shinkenger
I can see why they didn't use this episode, given the Kuroko guys :p. but I think they did use the monster though :lol |
In the spirit of the Holidays I watched the Christmas episode for both Gekiranger and Kakuranger. Geki was a pretty fun episode, despite the kid who plays Carl being horrible. And of course Ken dressing up as Carl's dead mother :lol Kakuranger was fun for the old school cheesiness of it, but I mainly watched for what is probably a mistranslation where Chibi Santa says that Santa loves kids and loves to take advantage of them while their parents are asleep. The fact he also uses a van to deliver presents now doesn't help matters.
|
Act 21 of Shinkenger
I like how they showed Chiaki's dad showing up and kind of a background episode for him, though I kind of wish they had done that for all the Shinkengers :lol and I might watch the Rider Decade episode for the crossover, but I might wait until I finish Shinkenger :p |
Act 22 of Shinkenger
Man, I think I kinda have a crush on Kotoha after seeing her focused in this episode :lol But when Chiaki showed concern about if the guy was serious or not with Kotoha, is that where they got the idea for Mike and Emily, seriously, did they have even ONE original idea in samurai at all (not counting the bulk and spike thing, but even that was based off of act 14 of shinkenger!) |

Finished ep 27 of Abaranger, the body-switch episode. It's a good episode since Yukito and Ryouga have such differing characteristics that its interesting to see them switch personalities. Also at Epic 27 of Goseiger and I must say I'm liking Agri's focus episodes. They're always interesting. |

I just have the last three episodes of Dekaranger to go, but I decided to make a side trip and watch the Abaranger/Dekaranger team-up movie. It was... weird. There is definitely a tonal difference between the two teams and the whole thing ends up being a lot goofier than Dekaranger's standard (telephone dinosaur curry pervert why?). The bit where Jasmine, Umeko, and Ranru dress up in off-the-shoulder kimonos while sporting tattoos and wielding submachine guns is probably the biggest big-lipped alligator moment I've ever seen in a Sentai. Still, the story is solid, the action's good, and there's some fun interplay between the two casts. My main takeaway, though, is that after only seeing him for a few minutes I really, really want to see more of Abarekiller; dude is badass.
|
Yeah, that's pretty much what I took away from that team up too. I know people say that Abaranger is a really dark series masqueraded by a lot of comedy but that isn't really reflected there, which makes me all the more interested to check the series out when its properly subbed.
(Which is probably going to take forever so I may just end up tracking down the HK ones) |

I'm watching Abaranger right now, and they say its a dark series? I don't know, its seems light to me. I guess the fact that Abare Killer is gonna... you know, is what makes people think of it as dark. By the way, I finished Episode 28, the wedding episode, it was a good Asuka episode. You see more of Asuka's background and he's relationship with Jannu/Mahoro. |
Quote:
Of course, I haven't had the chance to see many Abaranger. It could be like Zyuranger and have an almost bipolar effect of serious and silly. I doubt it gets that "dark" though. |
And Dekaranger is finished, save the Magiranger team-up. Overall impressions? Probably my favorite Sentai so far. Great cast, great mechs, fantastic action, some really good stories, good humor... the monster designs were pretty bad, but that aside I freaking loved this show. Better than Dairanger, better than Jetman, and even better than Gokaiger. I loved this series and will probably rewatch it all over again once Over-Time finishes their sub of it.
Up next... well, the aforementioned Deka/Magi team-up. But after that I'm going back to the 90s with Zyuranger. |
Double-post, don't care. I decided to go ahead and watch the Magiranger/Dekaranger team-up now instead of waiting. It... well, it wasn't terrible, per say, but it sure as hell wasn't good. I think I may just punch the next person that says the word "family" to me.
This movie really reinforces my total lack of interest in Magiranger and I think it's safe to say I'll never go back and watch more of it. The Dekaranger parts, unfortunately, didn't make up for it, either. The characters felt all right, but there were some little things that bugged me, like Ban having the wrong SPD License and the lack of the narrator when Jasmine used her Esper powers. It was kind of a cute epilogue, but on the whole I feel it didn't add much to the Dekaranger story (unless you really needed to see Tetsu dress up as a woman again - which was, in fairness, the funniest part of the film). But yeah, bad movie, especially when watched right after Dekaranger's amazing finale. Also, I said last night that the girls' weird dress-up scene in the Deka/Aba movie was a crazy big-lipped alligator moment? Man, that shit had nothing on the crazy dress-up scene from Magi/Deka. |
I'm actually gonna piggyback off of Switchblade and say that I watched the first episode of Dekaranger. Right now, I kinda have mixed feelings. I know it's typical Sentai that the red ranger is the one that really stands out at first, but here it's like he's the only one with a personality beyond... enjoying baths. I don't know, maybe it's just me coming off of my Geki high into a new show, but I feel like there was something lacking. The choreography wasn't all that great either, with the most exciting thing being the pea-shooter Hybrid Magnum finisher. I'm not going to write off the series yet, but it's going to take more than this to win me over.

Ugh, I had a hard time with DekaRanger, and once I hit that giant space baby episode I couldn't take it any more. I think I might have watched the next episode, and that one introduced DekaMaster, who was completely awesome, but I kept having flashbacks to the horrible space baby and couldn't go on.
I just kept finding it pointlessly stupid or silly. Like Green's thinking pose (or was it blue, I don't even remember any more), wtf? And Ban was loud and annoying. And Murphy kinda bugged me. And all of Umeko's episodes were bad like that space baby one. Maybe I'll resume it again someday, after I finish Shinkenger, and after I try a couple others I'm interested in, like Boukenger and Jetman. |

I will grant that I don't necessarily find the Shinkengers especially interesting, but the stories have been more interesting than those of Dekaranger and Gokaiger. |

but I cant seem to watch more than one or two episodes without getting distracted and doing something else, yet with goseiger, I watched it nonstop till I finished it |
Considering watching Kakuranger. Always wanted to see how different it was from 03, aside from using the Zords in the wrong order and such.
