Satria Garuda Bima 2013 Skyfansubs* Satria Garuda Bima-X The Beginning 2014 * Satria Garuda Bima-X 2014-2015 * Satria Heroes Revenge of Darkness 2017 Netflix Satria Naga Kai 2019 FlameSubs Those are all the Tokusatsu entries anyway. There's an animated series called Bima-S which is ongoing since 2020 but I'm not familiar with it. Quote:

And man... I haven't even watched Satria movies yet (It was on cinema in my place but no one will watch it along). I'll probably get back to your summary if I have done it. |

Shame to hear nobody would watch it with you. I imagine seeing it on the big screen would have been a pretty cool experience. I look forward to hearing your thoughts! |
Next Friday will be the final Gridman Friday :cry
|
Gridman is finally done. I loved it. It got a great balance between Toku cheesiness and cornyness, it got a lot of charm and the cast did a great job as the characters
I will miss watching this silly show week by week, but it's thank to Tsuburaya and their channel for giving me this chance. Baby Dan Dan forever. |
Just got done shotgunning through Daimajin Kanon, and I liked it alot! It really is the proper second season of Hibiki, and even manages to proper talk about and deal with alot of the ideas that the Inoue episodes tried to utilize and utterly failed at. Very glad to have seen it.
Also, who was Kanon's' brother played by? I remember people saying he was a special guest or something? |

Oh, and he was also the lead in some kid's show from 2000 called Kamen Rider Kuuga. |

I can never recognise Odagiri post-Kuuga between his facial hair and different hairstyles. Guy really committed to a different style!

I watched 2 episodes of Inazuman and it comes across a lot like KR Stronger, by which I mean it feels like an acid trip and is super fun in a so bad it’s good way. I absolutely love that Inazuman’s awesome superhero power is basically going “NO U” and reversing whatever nonsense the antagonist was doing. The mere thought of how ridiculous this will get later on when the protagonist has already reversed the villain breaking a dam has me VERY excited. This isn’t even getting started on the hamfisted acting, ridiculous outfits, and *outrageously* 70s music. So excited to watch more.

Started Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad. I liked Malcolm better than Takeshi with just one episode.

I wrapped up Inazuman pretty fast since it was short and, frankly, really good. This show is now one of my favorite Showa tokusatsu shows that I’ve seen. They actually managed to have a nice sense of progression, the Bamba Empire was a pretty good threat, and it had both cheesy nonsense and some actual drama. I really enjoyed it!
On the other hand, I am now upset because I am pretty sure absolutely no one had subbed Inazuman Flash, officially or otherwise. |
I finished Metalder yesterday and it was one hell of a ride. The ending was very sad though which I had been kind of expecting in some form but I did still really, really enjoy the show. It did a good job making you feel for Top Gunder even though it is literally just a suit but I'd have liked if you could have had Ryusei and Mai as a couple when the show had finished, I suppose you can always make it up in your head what happened after!
|
^ Metalder is the very first Showa era Toku series I’ve watched in its entirety and I find the show to be vastly underrated. I love Ryusei and Top Gunder. Easily my favorite Toku series that’s not related to Sentai, Kamen Rider, or even Power Rangers. I am considering watching Metalder again at some point next year. Also need to start watching my Gridman Blu-Ray set that I got from Amazon sometime ago plus the Guyver 2: Dark Hero DVD I just got from that same website.
|
Metalder is a fantastic show. I really loved how all of the monsters were recurring characters that might appear in the background for a dozen episodes before they got their moment in the spotlight. It was a really neat take on how to do the enemy forces.

Finally finished Super Human Samurai Syber-Squad. It doesn't differ that much from Gridman. They're both silly and goofy shows based on outdated technology, but Gridman took itself too seriously while SSSS was less by embracing its silliness.
I joked many times watching it how cheap this production is, but sadly that is its biggest flaw. They could not use the show's full potential because they had a seriously tight budget recycling the same indoor sets making the setting so isolated from the world and having extras or guests was very few and spaced out between episodes. For crying out loud one character was never seen and the only thing they used was her voice. And yet they thought extending the show for 16 more episodes was a great idea. As a reminder, Gridman ran for 39 episodes, SSSS went past that number by reaching 53 episodes, and the only reason they finally decided to end it was running out of footage to use. And even then, they've been recycling battle footage way many times than it should be allowed. Episode order was also out even with the official order presented when they were introducing the new attack vehicles and weapons creating many plotholes. Maybe I could rearrange the order to make it more consistent. The actors did their best with the material they've been handed to. The writing is not the deepest or the most serious, but you won't get any dull moment with them. Amp and Mrs. Starkey were my most favorites. And of course, Malcolm and Kilokahn are the best improvement over their Gridman counterparts and Glen Beaudin and Tim Curry brought enough personality they could carry the entire show with just them bickering like the odd couple. The series reached its peak with episode 37 "Kilo Is Coming To Town" where it's agreed it should've ended there. The next 16 episodes were like an unnecessary bonus that regressed the show backwards like it hit a reset button. Amp got replaced with a cheap copy duplicating his random humor, Malcolm is back to his old self like he never went through any development, and more recycled fight scenes where one monster was used twice within these 16 episodes. It was clear they were running out of steam. And the finale was your average run of the mill event with the main actor absent and no finality ever on what happened to the main villains like they've disappeared unceremoniously. It was hastily put together like the crew no longer gave a damn to do anything. Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad was an experience alright. I thoroughly enjoyed it even at its lowest points and it'd be interesting to rewatch SSSS Gridman now that I finally watched this and Gridman together. |
^ I'm really glad you enjoyed this series. I'm actually considering going back on watching Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad sometime next year. I'm even planning to re-watch a few certain episodes for my Thanksgiving and Christmas marathons like I did last year. And yeah, that two-parter really should've been the show's grand finale like it, more or less, seems to be in the original Gridman series. Also glad to see another Amp fan. :thumb:

Sailor Moon R (Episode 01) Final few on Series I. |
About 6-7 episodes deep on Metalder. Love that the whole army is shown from the beginning. Topgunder deserves his own short series.

Watched the English Dub of Godzilla 2000 last night with some friends and we all took a hit from individual shot glasses right after someone said "It'll go through Godzilla like crap through a goose" (in reference to armor-piercing missiles) simply cause it was so hilarious!

Something a lot different from my usual fare today. This week and the next, we?re doing?
Androzani?s Space Squad Detour And this week, we?re covering? Space Squad Episode Zero: Girls in Trouble. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFx7euW...jpg&name=small Instead of an in-universe explanation, I?ll do an out-of-universe explanation for Space Squad. Essentially, the project is an attempt by producer Hideaki Tsukasa (who not only produced several Sentai shows in the early 2000s, but is also the reason Kamen Rider Decade is pink, apparently) and director Koichi Sakamoto to create a Japanese equivalent to the MCU using the Super Sentai series and it?s little brother who died in its teens, the Metal Heroes series (since Toei only co-owns Kamen Rider, rather than having exclusive rights, they?re too expensive to be a part of this). What we?re about to witness is a Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club prequel to the first instalment, focused on the female heroines from Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger (Tsukada?s first series as main producer) and the Space Sheriff: Next Generation movies. Twin Cam Angels: Marika ?Jasmine? Hiwatari (nee Reimon)/DekaYellow: 10 years on from the Dekarangers? final battle with Agent Abrella, Jasmine has settled down with Hikaru Hiwatari, a fellow ESPer she saved in a previous case and has a child, thus necessitating she take maternity leave from SPD. As a result of her pregnancy, she has developed teleportation abilities similar to her husband?s. Koume ?Umeko? Kodou/DekaPink: In the past 10 years, Umeko and Sen have kept up with their police duties, while also pursuing a relationship. They are currently engaged. Galactic Federal Police: Shelly: The assistant to the new Gavan, Geki Jumonji, and the cousin to the previous Gavan?s assistant Mimi. Like her cousin, she hails from the Planet Bird and possesses the ability to change into a parakeet via Laser Vision. Sisi: The assistant to the new Sharivan, Kai Hyuuga. Unlike her fellow assistants, she is a scientist rather than an officer. Tammy: Assistant and lover to the new Shaider, Shuu Karasuma. She is the last survivor of the planet Uturussa, which was destroyed by a hitman to prevent their genetic habit of becoming berserkers when enraged from devastating the universe. To prevent his from happening to her, she wears a bracelet that suppresses violent thoughts. Since I don?t have any real strong opinions of the Space Sheriff franchise, I?ll just say that the writer for this is Naruhisa Arakawa (who I do have strong opinions on, but they?re not relevant here) and move onto the review. We open on a shadowed bird-like alien (voiced by prominent Japanese singer and VA Mami Kingetsu), on the phone, discussing an experiment while laughing evilly. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFx7eaX...jpg&name=small https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFx7ebX...jpg&name=small https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFx7ekX...jpg&name=small After the opening title, we cut to Jasmine, waking up in a mysterious room she doesn?t remember entering. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyBP6W...jpg&name=small Going to investigate, she finds another woman (credited as ?Vivian?, after a minor character from Uchuu Keiji Shaider, and played by Sanae Hitomi, who will be suit acting Jasmine later in the film), terrified for her life. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyBQsX...jpg&name=small Vivian is almost immediately killed by a strange creature after begging for help, to which Jasmine makes a retreat. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyBRRW...jpg&name=small Jasmine soon retreats to another cell block, where she finds Umeko asleep. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyBRxX...jpg&name=small But Jasmine is unable to wake up Umeko before she gets killed by a tendril from the creature. Jasmine then lets it grab her so she can use her powers. ?Jasmine is an ESPer. When she touches something, she can read the mind of the last person who touched it.? But? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyJUXW...jpg&name=small Jasmine is then slashed to death by the creature? before waking up in a room she doesn?t remember entering? again. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyJXnW...jpg&name=small Once more, Vivian shows up and gets savaged by the creature. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyJWAX...jpg&name=small But this time, Umeko is awake when Jasmine finds her and helps hold out against the creature. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyJWuX...jpg&name=small But unfortunately, the creature breaks through the barricade and kills Umeko anyway. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyO-aW...jpg&name=small It then kills Jasmine? who once again wakes up in the same room. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyPAVX...jpg&name=small https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyPBNX...jpg&name=small You can probably guess what?s coming next. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyPCRW...jpg&name=small But this time, Umeko comes in and saves Jasmine, taking them elsewhere. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyW1CX...jpg&name=small As Umeko tries to tell Jasmine something, the two stumble upon several other women, all victims of the creature. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyW2JX...jpg&name=small But they do eventually find two fellow survivors, Galactic Federation Police officers Shelley (played by Suzuka Morita, who was previously Kotoha in Shinkenger) and Tammy (whose actress, Mayu Wakamoto, I can?t find anything else on. Perhaps Switchblade or Sunred can help me there). https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyW28X...jpg&name=small As they debate who could want to kidnap female cops and have them killed by an unknown creature, said creature bursts in. Though they are able to defeat the creature with the aid of Tammy?s inhuman strength, allowing Shelley to stab it, they aren?t able to actually kill it, as it then does to them. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyW3_W...jpg&name=small We then cut to planet Bird, where Sisi (played by Misaki Momose, previously one of the fanservice henchwomen in Kyoryuger?s movie) is discussing their current project over the phone. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyihHX...jpg&name=small She then walks into the lab, where it turns out the bird woman from earlier is actually her superior, Birdie, an old partner of Doggie Kruger. The lights were off because she has very sensitive eyes (I?m reminded of some sketches on Horrible Histories where a guy would be reading a scary story that ended on less than scary twists). And as for her doing evil laughter? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyikGX...jpg&name=small Birdie then brings up the results of the experiment to find suitable candidates for a mission. Sisi is pleased to know that Shelley and Tammy are among the top 4, but is confused as to the identities of Jasmine and Umeko, who Birdie fills her in on. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFyij9W...jpg&name=small Back in the complex, while the 4 are discussing their specialities Tammy opens up about why she wears a bracelet. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFys8EX...jpg&name=small Shelley then begins to recap the events of Uchuu Keiji Shaider: Next Generation. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFys5kX...jpg&name=small We then flashback to how Shaider broke her out of her anger last time (He?s played by Hiroaki Iwanaga, which led to this conversation between myself, Die and DreamSword over Discord). Me: (Shaider)?s played by Akira Date. Die: Ah, the best Kamen Rider Birth. DS: So never watch it. Me: And he has his shirt off in one scene. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFys6wX...jpg&name=small DS: So, DEFINITELY never watch it. Searching for other survivors, they find that Vivian killed herself because she couldn?t stand dying 17 times over. But they find someone else in the form of Maki (played by Minami Tsukui, who you may recognise as the Batta Woman/Hopper Dopant from Kamen Rider W, the other fanservice henchwoman from Kyoryuger?s movie, Yoko Minato/Kamen Rider Malika (in and out of suit) from Kamen Rider Gaim and Gina Spectre from Ultraman X), an officer from Neo-Clin (which for those savvy enough in Metal Heroes information, like Shi Ranger, is a big hint as to what the creature is). https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFys85W...jpg&name=small Maki is traumatised by her deaths, as Jasmine determines using her ESPer powers. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFy1oLX...jpg&name=small But when the creature bursts in, Maki proves adept enough in contact (and that?s not a stuntwoman. The actress is actually doing the fighting herself) to hold off the creature alongside Tammy, allowing Jasmine to properly read its mind to determine its weak spot. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFy1wzX...jpg&name=small Using this information, Shelley uses her Laser Vision to strike the creature, disintegrating it once and for all. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFy9qoW...jpg&name=small With the candidates determined, Birdie and Sisi end the simulation, waking everyone up in reality. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFy9sIX...jpg&name=small As the two Dekarangers realise that the whole thing was accomplished using the same technology as their own Mirage Dimension (which creates a holographic illusion that looks and feels like it could be real, even to trained professionals.). Birdie explains that all of this was a test to find someone to face the real world version of the creature. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFy9uNX...jpg&name=small Birdie explains that Helvira is the president of the assassination company Nemesis Avengers (honestly, given that she?s a barely sentient abomination with murder on the brain, she seems overqualified) and one of the 12 Apostles of the Genmakuu Society (the name is a portmanteau of ?Gen? (幻), meaning phantom, and Makuu, the name of Gavan?s villain faction). The GFP had captured her, and their new director Sophie (played by Ryoko Yuui, another actor I couldn?t find anything on at the time, but now she?s gone on to the larger role of Mrs. Kurama in Kamen Rider Geats) was leading a squad of men in overseeing her interment, when she unleashed a pheromone that caused the men to kill each other and forced Sophie to put the whole prison in lockdown to prevent her from escaping. So Birdie was assembling a team of women to defeat Helvira and rescue the director using the simulation, with Shelley, Tammy and Maki being the lucky winners. The others are sent home, with Jasmine suspicious of the visions she received when she scanned Maki showing a method of death that didn?t match up with the virtual Helvira?s methods of killing. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFzPb3W...jpg&name=small But for now, she and Umeko get around to packing for a return trip to Earth. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFzPcrX...jpg&name=small But before Umeko can tell Jasmine what she wanted to say earlier, but Jasmine interrupts with her realisation. Meanwhile, the rescue team proceeds into the prison. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFzPcJX...jpg&name=small And back at the lab, Boss makes an appearance discussing his candidates with Birdie, before they come in with Sisi to report their realisation. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFzbzKX...jpg&name=small https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFzb17W...jpg&name=small As the rescue party discover the director, Maki stabs Tammy in the back. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFzcKZW...jpg&name=small Maki: Ninpo: Genmakuu Kaoitshi (I have no idea if that?s an accurate romanisation). https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFzcMZX...jpg&name=small The newcomer (played by Miki Hara, who you may recognise as the eponymous character in Cutie Honey the Live and Inga Blink in Kamen Rider Fourze?s movies) reveals herself as Benikiba (named for a villainess from Sekai SenNin Jiraiya, but she?s unlikely to be the same person), a spy for Genmakuu who was sent by their founder Fumein (who one person on Twitter called the Metal Heroes version of the Great Leader) to retrieve Helvira for her services to the organisation. Meanwhile, Sisi has checked in with their base on Neo-Clin. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFzmZRX...jpg&name=small And she analysed her fighting style from recording of the simulation. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFzmZdX...jpg&name=small With that information, combined with Jasmine?s vision, they conclude that Benikiba blew up the real Maki two weeks ago and took her place so she?d infiltrate the rescue team selection and pass the trial to gain access. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFzmaIX...jpg&name=small With this information, Jasmine and Umeko enter the prison and confront Benikiba and Helvira, the latter of whom assumes a more humanoid face (which makes her resemble the character named Helivira from Jikuu Senshi Spielban. I didn?t mention the connection earlier because, well, Kyuranger had a lot of references to Spielban so I assumed they were all the rage in 2017) and starts talking (with her voice provided by Michie Tomozawa, known in Tokusatsu as Eyelash Line from Voicelugger, known outside of Tokusatsu as the original voice of Sailor Mars). https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFzwoDX...jpg&name=small Benikiba explains that Helvira is actually an intelligent woman, but she only has access to her mental faculties whenever there?s an alignment of two moons, which Planet Bird just so happens to have. The two Dekarangers transform and fight Helvira into the loading dock, but being smarter just means that she?s even tougher to beat. And the insert song probably isn?t helping. https://open.spotify.com/track/7Msbu...Q8GwNHdEIX5DDQ https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFz7fCX...jpg&name=small Pushed into a corner, Jasmine decides to sacrifice herself so that Umeko will have a chance to defeat Helvira. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFz7p4W...jpg&name=small When Umeko volunteers herself, Jasmine decides to ask what she wanted to share earlier. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFz73jX...jpg&name=small Jasmine reacts as only Jasmine can. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGFz73pX...jpg&name=small Umeko then goes out to attack, lamenting that she couldn?t even wear a wedding dress in an illusion, which gives Jasmine an idea. Back with the other half of this crossover, Shelley gets beaten up by Benikiba, who mocks her for being a cop. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0DHpW...jpg&name=small Benikiba then elaborates that she herself used to be a space cop, like Shelley. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0DMJX...jpg&name=small https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0DNIX...jpg&name=small Shelley then asks for a full backstory, which Benikiba refuses to give. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0MifW...jpg&name=small Seeing that Shelley is on the verge of death, Tammy decides to take off her bracelet and go full berserker, chasing off Benikiba while Shelley escapes. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0MljX...jpg&name=small Back with the other two, Helvira gets put on trial by the Dekarangers. Umeko: Helvira. For the 764 murders at the hands of the Nemesis Avengers, as well as the prison staff and attempting to break out of prison, Judgement! SP License: Judgement Time! ?For dealing with Alienisers, the Special Police can request judgement from the highest court, located in a distant galaxy.? X Umeko: Delete approved! But this doesn?t deter Helivira, who simply murders Umeko and Jasmine (which brings her count up to 766, if I?m not mistaken). https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0MnHW...jpg&name=small But then she gets ambushed by Jasmine and Umeko, who turn off the Mirage Dimension. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0MzLW...jpg&name=small A flashback then reveals Jasmine?s unspoken plan. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0WpZW...jpg&name=small The two then transform and perform a duo attack named by Umeko, which finishes off Helvira. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0Wq9W...jpg&name=small Elsewhere, with her original objective now unobtainable, Benikiba retreats before Tammy can kill her. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0WsoX...jpg&name=small Back in the hangar, Jasmine has some notes on their last battle. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0fnRW...jpg&name=small But then Tammy bursts in and Umeko remembers how Shaider calmed her down before, deciding to try it herself. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0fpwX...jpg&name=small Amazingly, this works. And then Tammy assured us that she isn?t a one-sided lesbian, as some people would be inclined to think after this. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0frUX...jpg&name=small As Sophie begins thinking of doing more team ups between the GFP and Dekaranger, Shelley light-heartedly teases her comrade. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0fsrX...jpg&name=small Meanwhile, at an unknown location, Benikiba meets with Mad Gallant (the secondary antagonist from Kyoujuu Investigator Juspion, reprised here by Junichi Haruta, also known as Kanpei Kuroda/GoggleBlack from Goggle Five, Ryu Hoshikawa/DynaBlack from Dynaman, Yoshito Hirose/Trial B from Kamen Rider Blade, Dr. Prospect/Eyes Dopant from Kamen Rider W Returns: Eternal and Genryu Rippukan (KyoryuGreen?s dad) from Kyoryuger), revealing that she has found a source of Rurumodine for his plan. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0oLHX...jpg&name=small Back at GFP HQ, Birdie admits she was wrong, Shelley gets a call from Gavan? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0oPgX...jpg&name=small and Sophie gives advice to Umeko on skin care for her wedding, and hints at the future? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGF0oOiW...jpg&name=small Cue the credits, with a song by the 5 protagonists of this. https://youtube.com/watch?v=j4dPrCqqgfE A peaceful galaxy and my happiness (my happiness) Both are precious, important things! Women are always full of desire (Full of desire) We'll arrest That dream We were Going after Even if I get a little hurt even if I pause in the end I should smile Girls say Hallelujah! Final thoughts: A pretty good prequel, that isn?t weighed down by being a lead in to something bigger and surprisingly avoids the pratfalls of doing an all female cast. I would recommend this to anyone who can get their hands on it (or feels brave enough to PM me for a Google Drive link). To be continued in? Space Squad: Uchuu Keiji Gavan vs Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger |
Just last night, I re-watched the first and only two-parter of Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad which also just happens to take place right around Christmas time and that it could've made as a pretty solid series finale.

I finished watching Kikaida a few weeks ago and totally forgot to comment on it, which is a shame, as I really liked it! I genuinely think that was the overall best Showa-era tokusatsu I've seen, and it definitely deserves its good reputation. It wasn't perfect by any means, but it managed to have some genuine emotional weight and an interesting story. I also have to hand it to Hanpei for being the only comic-relief character from this time period I found consistently funny. I've come to a realization lately that as much as modern Rider is my favorite toku, it is pretty bottom of the barrel for me back in the Showa-era.
On a little bit of a side note, I also found it extremely funny that Akifumi Kaneko, who is known for series like Wild Arms and Symphogear, clearly really liked this show. The amount of references to it he makes and the fact the original Wild Arms game has more than a passing resemblance to certain parts of the show's story made it really educational to watch as a big Kaneko fan. |
Hello and welcome to the latest instalment of?
Androzani?s Space Squad Detour And this week, we?re doing? Space Squad: Uchuu Keiji Gavan vs Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlpZLVX...jpg&name=small There?s a lot less for me to recap, character-wise or plot-wise, other than this. Heroes: Geki Jumonji/Uchuu Keiji Gavan Type-G: Originally an astronaut from Earth, Geki was rescued from an accident by the original Gavan and spent the next year training to be his successor. Geki has a lot of potential as a detective, but he often buts heads with his superiors over his refusal to stand down when ordered to. Villains Mad Gallant: Satan Goth?s son and heir to the Kyojuu Empire. He faced Kyojuu Investigator Juspion several times, eventually dying against him twice. Satan Goth: A being born of the negative energy of the Universe, the great demon god whose revival was foretold in the Galactic Bible with the power to enrage the Megabeasts, turning them into vicious monsters. He was born in the Dark Galaxy and made his way to the Milky Way Galaxy, but before long was foiled by the Golden Bird, a being made of positive energy he greatly fears. Satan Goth?s objective was to create a Kyojuu Empire in the Galaxy and rule it from Earth, more specifically from Tokyo, Japan. This movie has the exact same staff as my last review, So I?ll just start with this one. We open with the narrator (who I didn?t mention last time was voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya, who was concurrently appearing in Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger as Shou Ronpo/Ryu Commander, a role he returns to in Super Hero Senki), explaining the Genmakuu Society (while I explained the origin of the ?gen? last time, I?ll redirect you to a video to explain the ?Makuu?) https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlo__KX...jpg&name=small https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlo__QW...jpg&name=small We then cut to Geki and Shelley on the planet Succubus, observing a weapons trade conducted by Mad Gallant, head of a weapons smuggling ring. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlo__UX...jpg&name=small Despite being told to wait for Dekaranger?s Fire Squad (that is, a group of hot-blooded DekaReds from throughout the galaxy, not a side business that functions as a fire department) to back them up, Geki wants to go in. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlo__ZX...jpg&name=small After assuring Shelley that she?s the only partner he wants, Geki marches right up to the mobsters and flashes his badge (when does that ever work?) https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlpIE0X...jpg&name=small But predictably, that just gets them to attack him, necessitating that he jouchaku into Gavan, which brings him into conflict with Mad Gallant. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlpIFQW...jpg&name=small Shelley takes advantage of this to beat up the other mobsters to get to the briefcase containing Mad Gallant?s latest weapon? a briefcase which turns out to be empty. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlpPAPX...jpg&name=small As Shelley realises that this was a trap (though with nowhere near the same gusto as Admiral Ackbar), she gets shot by a cloaked assailant. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlpPBGW...jpg&name=small Geki gets distracted by this enough that Mad Gallant can defeat him and cripple his back using his finisher. MG: Mad Galactic! But before he can kill him, the Fire Squad arrives, necessitating that Mad Gallant and his lackey flee. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlpPC2X...jpg&name=small Later, at GFP headquarters on Planet Bird, Geki reports in to Director Sophie (the 4th director he?s had to work with in six years, I might add), requesting that he be allowed to find who took Shelley?s life. But she refuses (that makes him 4 for 4 on not getting along with his bosses. If he wasn?t such a damn good employee, he?d have been fired long ago). https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlpZMYX...jpg&name=small She instead wants him to investigate a diaper company, Smile and Gentleness. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlpvKkX...jpg&name=small Sophie explains that they?ve expanded way too quickly for it not to be suspicious, and that it?s rumoured the company is involved in dirty doings? while hitting Geki on the back, to prove that he?s not fit for duty. But he does get a good look at her computer screen, which has information on the Earth branch?s Dekarangers. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlpvK4W...jpg&name=small Geki ?accepts? the director?s decision and departs, missing out on a news report about 235 people on a single planet being drained of blood, with two puncture marks found on all of the victims (Police are investigating Castle Dracula for clues). On Earth, while Tetsu pursues a suspect in the vampiric killings, Swan is watching Sen-chan?s wedding to Umeko and reporting it to him. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlp49xX...jpg&name=small Tetsu catches up and briefly subdues his suspect. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlp492X...jpg&name=small But the suspect resists, forcing Tetsu to transform and have a prolonged fight to subdue him. At the wedding, Geki bursts in as the priest gets to the ?you may kiss the bride? part of the service. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqJThX...jpg&name=small Umeko assumes that Geki is here to try and claim her (to Sen-chan?s dismay), but gets annoyed when he goes over to Jasmine. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqJYNX...jpg&name=small Geki presents a warrant requesting aid with a case, to which Boss appears, revealing that he worked with the original Gavan, Retsu Ichijouji, from time to time. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqJXPW...jpg&name=small Boss: Retsu used to call me that a lot. Geki: Yoroshiku yuuki. Let?s talk later. Houji and Sen-chan decide to involve themselves with the case, which means that Umeko gets dragged along and Boss is left to carry on the wedding. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqVJFX...jpg&name=small Geki explains that he needs Jasmine to read the crime scene to try and get a description for who killed Shelley. At the location on Succubus, Jasmine does so. ?Jasmine is an ESPer. By touching an object, she can read the memory of anyone who has touched it.? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqVGGW...jpg&name=small After entering the description (a green alien with a gun for a hand) into their database, the perp is identified as Kronen, a hired gun from the planet Berg. And luckily enough, not only is he already wanted by the Dekarangers, but he?s currently on Earth. When they find him in a truck on the road, he shoots them with a clip of red bullets that prove ineffective, before switching to conventional bullets. He then sends in half of the truck?s contents (the other half being a coffin with the Genmakuu Society emblem on it): Benikiba, who breaks into DolGiran. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqVLaX...jpg&name=small While the 4 members of Dekaranger are left to deal with Benikiba (who determines that their ?combat level? is low by looking at them), Geki attacks Kronen, who gets saved from death by the arrival of Mad Gallant. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqda0W...jpg&name=small Geki then gets into a sword battle with Mad Gallant, while Benikiba successfully overpowers Dekaranger?s ?burning justice? mantra (which this time consists of how ?deka? means ?times ten? as well as ?detective?. As Benikiba realises, they?re just spouting random sh*t). Mad Gallant mocks Geki?s Laser Blade, causing the latter to perform his finisher on his opponent. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqdfjW...jpg&name=small But without cutting out the music, Mad Gallant cleaves it in two, before doing the same to Geki?s Laser Blade with his own attack. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqddGX...jpg&name=small https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqdebX...jpg&name=small https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqlY_X...jpg&name=small Geki then flashes back to his training days, when OG Gavan gave him his Laser Blade and stressed its importance. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqlbQW...jpg&name=small Before Mad Gallant can kill an even more grieving Geki, Ban shows up in PatStriker and engages the Genmakuu Apostle in a close up fight, causing the latter to withdraw. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqlctX...jpg&name=small We then cut back to Neo-DekaBase (which they moved into after the old one got hijacked by Alien Abrella in the finale of Dekaranger). https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqvixX...jpg&name=small As Ban admonishes Geki for allowing his Laser Blade to be broken and for letting his anger and desire for vengeance get the better of him, Geki asks him one question, to which Ban doesn?t have an answer. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqvm4W...jpg&name=small But enough of that, because Swan has analysed the red bullets Kronen fired at DolGiran earlier. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlqvoDW...jpg&name=small She reveals that the bullets are designed to puncture the skin, and then drain half the blood of the target, like a leech. The mark it leaves looks like the victim has been bitten by a vampiric creature (Speaking of which, it turns out that the guy Tetsu detained earlier had an alibi). https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlq47UX...jpg&name=small They realise that no bullets were found because Kronen took them back to Mad Gallant afterwards. As they wonder what a weapons dealer would want with blood, Jasmine remembers something and calls her husband. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlq49iW...jpg&name=small She reveals that she remembered that because Smile and Gentleness are working with leeches to create a diaper that can absorb waste. Geki then realises the case he was reassigned to and the current one are one and the same, taking Umeko with him to talk to their company President. On the way, Umeko gives Geki an answer to his question. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlrG3UW...jpg&name=small But then she clarifies that she?d still try to work within the law to brig the criminal to justice. During their conversation, Umeko compares Geki to Ban, a comparison he doesn?t see. Geki: We Space Sheriffs aren?t like you guys. Once the engine in my heart is in full burn, I dash straight forward. That?s how I?vemade it up until now. Once they get to the diaper company, Geki and Umeko barge into the office of the CEO Lars (played by Hiromi Sakimoto, better known as the ill-fated Yuya Sumii in Kamen Rider Gaim), who ?accidentally? drops something and asks Geki to help pick it up. When they?re on the floor. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlra9iX...jpg&name=small Geki, Umeko and Lars escape to the underground of the company, only to be pursued by the secretary, who turns out to be Benikiba. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlra9jW...jpg&name=small Umeko finds that they?re unable to transform down here, due to signal dampeners. So she engages in a fight with Benikiba, as Geki hears Kronen in the distance. Back at Neo-DekaBase, Swan has discovered that all the victims in the bloodletting incidents had trace amounts of rurumodine in their blood. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlrzOSX...jpg&name=small Jasmine then remembers that Shelley had the ability to transform into a parakeet (you thought Benikiba was talking about Tammie last time, didn?t you?). Sen-chan decides to check up on Umeko and Geki, the former of whom is fighting with Benikiba over an artefact that?s just appeared (though the handle looks a lot like Mad Gallant?s sword), while Geki hears Kronen singing the diaper jingle, before finding nothing. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlrzOSX...jpg&name=small Geki returns to Umeko to find that she?s been stabbed? and Sen-chan is blaming Geki, even with Lars shouldering the blame. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlsHbmX...jpg&name=small Back at Neo-DekaBase, Houji reveals that Geki?s warrant is a fake the latter cocked up and that Geki was removed from the case. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlsHdMX...jpg&name=small Geki gets led to jail back on Planet Bird, where Sophie makes it clear that she?s disappointed in him. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlsHe8X...jpg&name=small She then finds herself facing OG Gavan, who is visiting the office. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlsY1CX...jpg&name=small He?s not put out by Geki going to prison, but is perturbed to hear that his Laser Blade broke. Back on Earth, Houji and Sen-chan investigate Lars? office, where they find footprints with the same mud that Geki was covered in after his second fight with Mad Gallant. And doing so, he realises that Mad Gallant was in the office earlier, despite Lars saying that he?s never been there. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlsY34W...jpg&name=small They then check his desk and discover a hologram of a weapon that horrifies them (does no-one in this organisation know how to be discreet? Because they basically hand everything to the heroes on a silver platter). https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlsY5WW...jpg&name=small While Jasmine and Swan analyse the artefact they took from Benikiba, they discover that it contains a combat suit. And talking of Benikiba, she breaks into Neo-DekaBase and begins murdering the guards (they have a combat level too low to measure, by the way). https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlsY6mW...jpg&name=small Benikiba then breaks into the lab and takes back the Masker Blade, before going to the interrogation room where Boss and Tetsu are talking with Lars? but not to kill the latter (as I thought when I first watched this), but to give him the Masker Blade. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlsjAWW...jpg&name=small Lars then reveals that he is Mad Gallant and that the Masker Blade was created from the remains of the original Mad Gallant?s body and mind. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlu8_GX...jpg&name=small (For those of you who don?t know what a Metaltech suit is, the I suggest you watch Juspion. That kind of makes it clear) Lars then equips the Metaltech suit, turning into Mad Gallant (with the explanation for how he sounds like the original when transformed being that he has his power), as Boss and Tetsu both transform. Boss: Emergency, DekaMaster! Tetsu: Emergency, DekaBreak! A fight breaks out, with Mad Gallant complimenting Boss based on what he?s heard, before Boss responds by dissing him compared to the real Mad Gallant. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlu9AYX...jpg&name=small https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlsyynW...jpg&name=small In retaliation, Mad Gallant uses Mad Galactic on them hard enough to incapacitate them. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGltA1jX...jpg&name=small Jasmine then tries to capture Benikiba by handcuffing herself to her, but the Kunoichi merely cuts her hand off before escaping. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGltA1iW...jpg&name=small As Houji and Sen-chan return (having been held up at the office by Kronen), with Sen-chan cursing Geki for dragging them into his revenge. But then, Umeko returns from the hospital (sporting a bandage and a crutch) and explains that Geki was still following usual police code, revealing what happened after he heard Kronen?s voice in the underground factory. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGltA1jX...jpg&name=small But Umeko urged him to go after Kronen, since she thought she had it covered. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGltA16X...jpg&name=small And the one who stabbed her wasn?t Benikiba, it was Lars. He was interrupted by Geki before he could actually kill her, so he played the part of the wounded gazelle https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGltLvOX...jpg&name=small Jasmine and Sen-chan then realise that based on Benikiba mentioning Shelley in the present tense earlier, that Shelley is still alive, which is why there was no body. Sen-chan also determines that she?ll be directly drained to power the doomsday weapon. Meanwhile, Benikiba meets up with Lars, reattaching her severed hand with Ninpo: Genmaku Saiseiwa. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGltLvgW...jpg&name=small Lars then leads her through his portal (which is opened by singing the diaper jingle, which is why Geki heard Kronen singing it earlier) to another planet where, Kronen, now fully converted to Genmakuu?s ideology, is preparing Shelley for use in Lars?s ultimate scheme: the revival of Satan Goth (why Lars wants to revive an alien who?s one ability is sending Kaiju berserk, I don?t know). https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGltWxfX...jpg&name=small Lars then begins punching Shelley until she bleeds (why did he need her alive again?), charging up Satan Goth. Though Benikiba notably disapproves of this. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGltWxfX...jpg&name=small Dekaranger then breaks into the space prison where Geki is held to spring him, revealing that Shelley is alive to snap him out of his funk. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGltqTRX...jpg&name=small Ban then joins up with them, resolving his differences with Geki before giving a v for victory at the camera (so much for a covert breakout). https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGltqTSW...jpg&name=small Back at the evil base, Benikiba takes her leave? which Lars takes as an opportunity to be even more brutal to Shelley (how did this guy ever pass himself off as normal?) https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGltqTUX...jpg&name=small But before he can do worse, the heroes fight their way through his ninja army (where did these guys come from?), before arriving to take up his time. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlt6VcX...jpg&name=small As Lars turns into Mad Gallant and Kronen loads his arm-gun, the heroes transform. Geki: Jouchaku! https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlt6VaW...jpg&name=small Geki: Uchuu Keiji Gavan! ?It takes Uchuu Keiji Gavan 0.05 seconds for the Jouchaku process to complete. So let?s watch the Jouchaku process again.? Geki: Jouchaku! https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlt6VyX...jpg&name=small DolGiran: Roger. Transmitting Combat Suit. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlt6VzX...jpg&name=small Ban: Change, standby! Others: Roger! All: Emergency, Dekaranger! Face On! ?When DekaBase receives the signal, it transmits particles of the space alloy Deka Metal onto Dekaranger, forming the Deka Suits.? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGluIFSW...jpg&name=small https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGluIKTX...jpg&name=small A fight then breaks out, with Kronen shooting it out with the Dekarangers, while Mad Gallant drags Geki into the Satan Goth Zone. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGluIKwX...jpg&name=small ?The Satan Goth Zone is powered by a black hole, giving an advantage to Mad Gallant? (While other dimensions were a staple of early Metal Heroes shows, it wasn?t really a thing in Juspion) While Kronen also gets the better of the Dekarangers elsewhere in the Satan Goth Zone, they come up with a plan. Meanwhile, Geki gets knocked out of his transformation, but is only saved from the punishment of another Mad Galactic by OG Gavan showing up and saving him. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlvQpeX...jpg&name=small The two Gavans then have a conversation set to Gavan?s ED, which ends with OG Gavan handing his Laser Blade to his successor, before going to fight off more ninja mooks. https://youtube.com/watch?v=sKMeW2HkGLo Somewhere in the starry sky lies my home The ones I love call out to me When the nights weigh down on me with the burden of sadness I lift up my eyes and gaze at the galaxies far beyond Stop at the soft sound of the night Don't give up on your dreams Countless spots of light whisper The message from the warm and gentle starry sky https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlvQoWX...jpg&name=small Meanwhile, Kronen finds Umeko dancing around singing a kid?s song (the same song she was singing in episode 1 of Dekaranger proper, which can also be heard in episode 1 of Fiveman, episode 35 of Kakuranger and episode 42 of Go-Busters). https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlvQpQX...jpg&name=small But his is a ruse so the others can ambush Kronen with their roll call. Ban: 1: To hate cruel wickedness? Houji: 2: To give chase to mysterious cases? Sen-chan: 3: To investigate with futuristic science? Jasmine: 4: The malicious evil of space? Umeko: 5: ? Only this time, Sen-chan freaks out, causing Umeko to shoot up the place (and people call Geki reckless). https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FGlv8sYX...jpg&name=small Final thoughts: As a story, this was perfectly serviceable. But even considering that Juspion is Arakawa?s favourite Metal Heroes series and that Mad Gallant is his favourite character from said show, it feels weird to have Juspion?s Mad Gallant as the bad guy here. To be continued in: Hero Mama League |
Just finished Chousoku Parahero Gundeen, and boy what a miniseries this was!
It has fantastic suit designs, a great cast, and a story that works magnificently. It's such a bizarre, out-there kind of idea to have a para-athletic hero, I mean, who comes up with the bright idea of having a superhero riding a wheelchair to fight a giant space lizard? But the thing that makes this great is how well it uses that outlandish concept. (Finally someone acknowledges Stanley The Troll is a villain.) Not only is it something I don't think I've ever seen done before, but the themes of working together, never giving up until you try, and anyone can be a hero regardless of disability. It's the very culmination of possibility, and everything about this just fits perfectly. It gives the cast a lot of great development, allowing them to directly assist the hero instead of being relegated to cheerleaders, and compliment the story extremely well, without making them condescending or just plain there. The story isn't dragged out, and doesn't even need a continuation in my book, and the added space alien elements don't detract from the story this show wanted to tell. And then there are the little details added in like the teacher doing the Ultraman Specium Ray pose, that are a lot of fun or Fukai being a narrator to the audience, which reminds me of some old movies where there was someone who interacted with the audience (which was pretty funny how Daishi noticed at the end). And seeing the returning Tokusatsu actors was especially great. And I had a great time watching this. Join me next time as I watch Tokusatsu GaGaGa! While shows are on break for New Years', I'll be trying to watch some short Toku shows I've been putting off. |
EmerJason is the Hero we didn't deserve, but the Hero we needed.
I know this was supposed to have been finished last week (2 weeks?) but I had internet issues and lots of stuff to take care of, but I have finally finished Tokusatsu GaGaGa, the show where we all relate to Nakamura-San. Now, I'd just like to throw this out here right now, but my family already knows I'm into Tokusatsu, as I grew up watching Godzilla and have a burning passion for men in goofy costumes. But even watching this show and witnessing the struggles of Nakamura's closet obsession still reminds me of myself, even if I'm what you'd call a recluse, I'd still not like to show off in front of people who would look at my interests in distaste. Heck, this applies to Anime and other things as well, I do feel embarrassed when people look at me looking at Legos or perusing the Manga section in a library, wondering why this haggard looking old man is poring into kid's toys or comics with hot chicks on them, when it's obviously not what it looks like. But the true beauty of this show is how perfectly the Tokusatsu shows coincide with Nakamura's daily struggles, from Jyushouwan's season mirroring the show as a whole, to the important lessons of these heroic figures whom we idolize, even comparing individuals to characters within the show, which this show depicts splendidly. I had fun watching this series, very heartwarming and wholesome, but reminds me of the good I've learned from these shows (or movies, as once again, Godzilla was a big part of my childhood, and the themes depicted in that left an impact on me to this day. I'd tell you about the Godzilla Vs Hedorah experience, but that's another story) and it amazes me how these simple "kid shows" convey something most mature stories fail to reach, which could come down to giving children a good upbringing or the general audience rating leaving no room for adding obstacles to prevent people from enjoying what it means to convey. I could go on all day about that, but I'm already losing track here. I say this show is great, and the themes it absolutely delivers. I still love that one scene where EmerJason actually gets chased by the cops when he's just a figment of Nakamura's imagination, or that scene where he appears before Nakamura in her senior highschool days rediscovering her love for Tokusatsu, which is an absolutely masterful scene (I guess writing this, I already love EmerJason). Might take a break for now, but the Ultraman Taiga Movie and Super Hero Senki are on my radar... But my next show is going to be the official unofficial parody Toei made themselves, Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger! |
I’m currently watching the Toei Spider-Man series and it’s oddly addictive…never watched that one before.

After months of putting it off ever since I bought the Blu-Ray set on Amazon as soon as it comes out, I’ve finally started watching Gridman as released by Mill Creek. Hopefully I'll be able to finish the series this time.
|
I'm now up to the third disc of the Blu-Ray set and only nine episodes to go until I'm up to where I left off on watching Gridman and then I will continue from there. I can also officially say that the video and sound quality of the Gridman Blu-Ray set really does look and sound great. The English subtitles themselves are hit or miss though.

Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon
Anime Episodes Series I Episode 40 Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon R Episode 01 Once I finish the Ranger shows I may start the Rider series next from the first. Sailor Moon had a live series but lasted only a year. Shout Factory had subbed up to Hurri. Almost caught up there. 4 new sets after Galaxy man. Another company had subbed Aba forward. |
Now that I finished re-watching the first 23 episodes of Gridman, I can officially head into new territory with the show’s remaining episodes. I almost forgot how much I really like this series.
