Well Cloud was voted on the Japanese poll, so there always been demand for him. Sakurai wasn't lying when he said the next few characters are fan service :lol.

Sakurai already said no anime.

Sakurai said that characters must have been in a video game first before appearing in anything else. So no Goku, Batman and Shrek in Smash. Jibyanyan from Yokai Watch is more likely then Goku. At least Yokai Watch was a video game first before it became a anime. Not to mention the series is huge in Japan right now and Nintendo could use Smash Bros to help promote the game and the show in the US.

I can imagine Nate (Keita) being similar how Pokemon Trainer worked back in Brawl going from what I've seen from the games and TV show.

I kind of want this to happen actually.
I imagine that Nate would fight by himself for regular moves that you tap the button but for smash attacks and specials he summons the power of random Yokai, like his standard B he calls out Jybanyan and uses Paws of fury.

At this point, I wouldn't put it past the Smash 4 DLC team to somehow get Goku in the game after the expectation breaking Cloud. After this, pretty much any videogame character is on the table for being in Smash that isn't Sony or Microsoft first party (except Banjio-Kazooie, maybe).

There's only so deep you can go with Nintendo characters, and Smash 4 kinda shows that digging a bit. So the future of new Smash characters to me, is third parties.

Goku is not from a videogame, but he sure as shit is in a lot of them. A lot more then some people characters on the current Smash Roster.

Goku started off as a manga character. Sakurai said all characters in Smash must have been from a video game first. For example, Pokemon was a video game first before it was a TV show and manga. Dragon Ball was a manga first before it was anime.

Sakurai also said fighting game characters wouldn't make it in yet Ryu is here and kicking.

So would Agumon count? He technically started off as a videogame character, you know in the same sense that MR Game and watch is a videogame character.
