Okay, but I swear I've come across you guys talking about almost the exact same thing, though I think that time is was about an all-female cast and/or a pink male ranger.

It was just about a pink male ranger, from about 2 months ago~

I just think he's a bit flat because he doesn't resonate with me as much as the other 4. He's a straight man character, and usually those types bore me. They are necessary for contrast with crazier characters (see Tusk and Leo's episode with the plushies) and they are good humor springboards for humor (Tusk needing to smell people's footwear), but otherwise they just aren't interesting. It's like the inverse of Comic Relief, they are good at reacting to the world but on their own they're not interesting leads.

And I'd be lying if I said I didn't like green elephants. Thank you Jean de Brunhoff. :lol

And also the idea of there being a (very tokenly done) gay ranger.

By the way, Nōkaman, Sentai I created with a male Pink, female Green, and gay (male) Yellow. And, if I ever got around to writing it, I would make sure to actually write with characters in mind, not token "wouldn't it be neat if" archetypes.

You should catch up on the conversation over the 4 threads in the sentai forum that LiamLee has hijacked with his wicked sexism and selective understandings of our arguments.

What about Sela? She's a straight man to the others, too (Though she is generally used with Leo).

And man, I forgot there was also the discussion on having a gay ranger just for the sake of having one.

I think the discussion would be a lot more productive (And a hell of a lot less repetitive) if he didn't keep taking posts out of context (Going so far as to cut sentences in half to make it sound like others are siding with him) or straw manning with the idea of an all female team.

Aiight, I'm gonna do these in bullet points:

• Yes, you did. I hate to break it to you, but taking one part of the sentence, leaving out the part you didn't like, and acting as if I were agreeing with you is changing what I was trying to convey. I meant that it's fine if other shows targeted towards children want to have an all-male or all-female team, but I don't think it's right for Super Sentai.
  
  
• I already stated my personal reason for preferring a team with both sexes, but I will reiterate it for you. I personally think that this allows for more variety within the cast. Something that's nice to have in a franchise with a lot of repeating archetypes.
  
  
• I don't see how Goranger lacking a giant punching robot is at all relevant to this discussion, seeing as how I never said I was against every kind of change to the formula. Besides, they still have plenty of vehicles to suit my fancy.
  
  
  
• Since you seem so adamant about mentioning the new Ghostbusters and the female Thor, I'll tell you what I honestly think of them. They are shameless attempts by their companies to cater to this new wave of media-focused feminism. Speaking as somebody who is a Ghostbusters fan, I really wasn't fond of this attempt to "diversify" Ghostbusters. Particularly when it was done a lot better in "Extreme Ghostbusters" back in 1997.

She is, but I'd say she's more "Team Mom Straight Man" to Tusk's more general "Straight Man."

Plus Yamato never had to put Tusk on a leash. :lol

From what I understand, the show was really popular because it was a sequel to Denziman, the highest-rated Sentai. There was also a HUGE backlash to the idea of an all-male team, to the point where Toei have never tried it again. I'm not the authority on this area though, so I could be off.

I'm not sure how people would react to it today. However, with how you come across, I merely said that to see how you reacted to the idea of an all-female team. If you posted something similar to what you just said before, then I must have missed it - there's too many posts to thoroughly read everything.

Anyways, I personally wouldn't mind an all-gender team, either male or female - as long as the show itself is good. However, I don't really see the point, unless they're trying to appeal to a specific audience. They could give us The Expendables of toku, an adrenaline-filled explosion-fest. Or, depending what they're trying to do with the all-female cast, they could give us more stuff like either Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon or Sexy Rangers. Neither, however, would really work in terms of what Sentai is now. The one time they tried changing up the formula, Go-Busters, people kind of flipped. Every season since then seems to be playing it safe. I can't see Toei EVER trying to experiment with an all-gender team through Super Sentai - they wouldn't want to risk it.

I'm curious though. You keep mentioning Sun Vulcan, but it's not on your list of what you've seen on that other topic. Have you seen any of it?


As for Tusk, I generally enjoy his character, but only because of his interactions with the other characters. It's like a buddy cop film - the different personalities of the cops are enjoyable because of how they play off each other.

Actually, I have a question. First, I want to set the scene. So, I originally got into Sentai because I liked seeing the suits in motion. Then I stuck with it because I started to actually like it as a show. The plot never really stood out to me as being anything interesting though. Sure, there'd be plot, but for the most part, most of the episodes are kind of the same thing - one of the members goes through some sort of situation, a monster shows up, that member resolves their situation and leads the team to beat the monster, then the monster grows and they use a big robot to finally destroy it. There's not a whole lot of variation on that formula, at least from what I've seen.

Then I decided to watch Kamen Rider Ghost, and it completely hooked me. After I caught up, I started watching Drive, which I also love. Yet people say that those are both meh seasons? After starting those two Rider series, any Sentai I've seen has been pretty plain in comparison.

Which leads me to my question (which might be better off in the KR section, but whatever). Why do people consider something like Ghost or Drive boring, when there's so much more going on than in Sentai?
