One day, he was interviewed a woman who'd just given birth to a baby girl. He asked if she'd thought of any names. She said, I kid you not, "I just heard the name Chlamydia. It is so pretty." :eyebrow My dad's jaw just dropped. Some people. SMH |

Well starting tonight, I begin two new Riders. First, one that has many a suit design I like. And with the recently released SHF, I think it's time to sit down and watch...Kabuto. And going with Kabuto comes Decade so I see just how bad everybody says it is.

Two, Chlamydia is a Sexually Transmitted Infection. Three, while we're on names, you ever realize how many Hebrew names in the Bible you don't really see nowadays? You ever met a guy named Zadok? Imagine if that name was popular and, say, Jacob wasn't. |

Kabuto Episode 1
Well that's an explosive way to start. I really, really love the Kabuto opening theme. I've loved it before I started watching the show, and my love of it will stay throughout the show. I alsways liked the video as well, once again even before I started to watch the show. So coming in I have a love already established for the OP. It sounds good, has a very nice techno beat to it which sounds like a heavier version of the Ryuki and 555 theme (and to a degree the first Blade theme). The accompanying video is nice, so all around the OP is a kick ass song and it along with the video are a great opener for the show. Holy crap it's an Orphenoch! Nevermind, it's something called a worm. So is this going to be like Blade where the riders work for an organization? Or are the Zectroopers the only ones working for them and the riders are independent and what not? Well I suppose I'll find out. Speaking of the Zectroopers, I don't really like them. They look really bulky with the way the suits look, as well as the fact that it's all black. I also don't like the helmets. It's like a combination of Ichigo and a fighter pilot's helmet, and it just doesn't click. I guess for a army/police/whatever unit the look fits, but I can't really dig them. The Riotroopers were honestly quite better looking. Which is a little sad because I do like this scene. It feels very reminiscent of Aliens and even Starship Troopers (mostly Aliens though). This I can dig, but those suits I cannot. These Worms are like fucking tanks when it comes to the Zectroopers. I mean they just walked through them like it was nothing. And now the damn thing has Digivolved for some unknown reason that they call molting. Is that going to be explained at some point or should I just shut my brain off about it? :lol That sign So this is Tendou huh? Cocky, strong, fast, has great reflexes, overall he sort of comes off like a jerk in this introduction scene and I can sort of see why not everybody likes him. But considering my track record with jerks as riders, are you all going to be shocked when I say that so far I like Tendou? He has this aura of self confidence and this knowledge/mind set of that he will decide his own path. I really love that and for me at least, makes him an interesting rider and one to get behind, especially with the deicing his path part. I don't know, so far I like him. Which seems to be the opposite with his sister. Tendou is calm and collected, as well as quiet. His sister in this first appearance seems like the loud, hyper type. Not saying that's a bad thing, it's just a little contrast I noted. And if she is like that, it's not some bad contrast at all. He has what? The hell was that scene for? Macho macho man. I want to be a macho man! Yup, this is definitely going to be like Blade. Except Zect hasn't gotten wiped out yet. Where the hell did Tendou get the belt from? Thank you Tendou. Where the hell are you when I'm stuck in line at Wal-Mart? I could use you. I would vocalize my qualms myself, but I'd say it too rudely. You say all calm like. I'm liking you more now. So she's, what do you call it, technokenetic? He's a quick little bugger isn't he. And he can take on the identity of other people ala the T-1000. Do all of the Worms have this ability? Or is it specific towards this one and this one alone? What's with the belts? Did it get a call or something? Electrical short? Do they just do that when they're near each other? Something tells me this Hiyori is an important character. How right am I? So Zectors come to you from the sky/another dimension? Weird. That's a fairly nice henshin. Don't get why he had to wave it in front of the belt before sliding it into the belt though. However there is one thing I've known about for a while now, that seeing it now has cemented my feelings on: I really do not like that the damn belt talks. I really don't. Don't like it when it says henshin or any of the other stuff it says. It worked with Faiz because the voice came out of a phone, that makes sense. This voice though is coming from nowhere, plus I don't like how the voice sounds that much as a whole. So yeah, not a fan of the talking belt. I'm loving these slow motion moments. Loved it in the fight with the Zectroppers, and I'm loving it here against Kabuto. Okay that was a cool way to locate the Worm. Well episode one has come to an end. All I have to say is...meh. The story was decent, though it was primary non existent. It did to a degree set up the story of the show, but not a whole lot. All we know is that a company named Zect created rider belts, and that the company fights creatures called Worms. That's it. True it did setup Tendou to be the main character, but it didn't do it all too well. Where did he get the belt from, what are his motivations, just what is his involvement with the story? So to be honest, I don't think this episode worked well with the story elements. However things pick up outside of the story element. The action was really cool and great in my opinion. The fight at the beginning with the Zectroopers and the Worms was just top notch in my opinion. They aren't riders, but they along with the Worms produced one of my favorite fight scenes in toku. Weird considering it's a squash fight, but the way it is handled I think makes it one of my favorites. The fight between Tendou and the Zectroopers and the Worm was good as well. This one didn't impress me as much though outside of the slow motion moment and the way Tendou located the Worm. But it wasn't nothing to laugh at. It was still an overall good fight scene, I just prefer the first one better. As for the characters, the only one I can really comment on so far is Tendou. And as I stated earlier, I'm liking him. He's self confident (though he's is a bit cocky about it) and he has this attitude and mindset that he and he alone will decide his path. I really love that about him. Though his hairdo isn't really too good looking though. The other characters were sort of just there. The only other one I suppose I could comment on was the one who almost became Kabuto (I already forget his name), and he just came off as a whiny kid to me. So for now, I don't have much to say about our cast of characters. So all in all, I thought that this wasn't too bad for a first episode. It didn't really have a story, but it did have some great action which in turn made for some great entertainment. It stopped at a place which has me curious as to what happens next, has some nice music, and a main character who I'm enjoying so far. So I'd say that it was a good episode and that I did in fact like it. |
DK 20.
Are those...censored out logos? My God this show has some of the worst editing I've ever seen in a show ever. As we'll get to this show is fantastic from a storytelling point of view, but wow whoever put this together needs to be fired. How is it that an American Ryuki adaptation is able to capture some of the very best fallout I've ever seen done in a toku show, period? This episode was phenomenal. Honestly although I don't really like the way the writers wrote themselves into the corner, Chris is probably one of the best handled Vented Riders in the show so far. Thrust and Camo ended before they began, the importance of Incisor's death comes and goes when it's needed to be important and Torque was a fantastic villain but his whole character arc just sort of deflated and then full on collapsed...and then he died in the epilogue of someone else's episode. With Chris, he died at the perfect moment for him to die and his death hasn't just been immediately sidelined by more Riders entering the frame, it was has repercussions and consequences. Conflict is a thing, people get hurt, actions actually matter. Len and Kit losing their shit was wonderful. |
DK 21.
Over half way through the series, and Kit finally Vents a Rider. Albert was a waste of a great design, but I will admit that I do like how the deaths are becoming increasingly more brutal. Not so much through graphic imagery or whatever but it was oddly dark to have Albert pleading his brothers name as he's literally disintegrating before his brothers eyes, leaving Danny to completely lose his shit and fall apart. Feels like we've come a long way from Incisor goofily crying "this sucks!" before he disintegrated into nothingness and we were expected to care. Sadly pretty much everything else about this episode sucked, I mean visually it was impressive and it had some cool ideas but it was the execution as usual that left a lot to be desired. I just get this constant sense that this is a show that really wants to do its own thing, and is constantly held back by the direction the Ryuki footage goes in. Honestly from what I can tell adapted Ryuki footage is pretty much non-existent now so I'm hoping for some big things from this second half. |

Can't wait to get into Kabuto. I watched a few eps long ago and don't remember much of it so I'm planning on going through it in its entirety after I finish Wizard and W.

DK 22. Siren's suit looks half finished, but hell yeah for sexy blonde biker chicks.
I found this episode pretty frustrating, if I'm honest. The sense of stakes in this show is just ramping up and up and up, Axe grew into a great character this episode as he went on a warpath of vengeance. I love that this show is allowing a character to lose their shit in the ways that it does, but just as it started to get a sense of momentum, the show took the story in another direction again. Was it some sort of mandated thing to constantly waste the potential of characters we're invested in for the sake of characters we've just met? Grr. |
DK 23. God the editing...
Man this show is really moving in a very different direction, I actually don't remember much about this half of the show at all. I mean I thought I did but quite a lot of these things are taking me by surprise so it's clear I don't remember as much as I thought I did but it has been like four years. Do I smell sub text love triangle?! To be fair Kit, I have grown to like you a lot, but you do kinda suck bro... This shouldn't really be a surprise. I mean you've Vented a Rider now, and learnt to stand up for yourself but you do still spend pretty much every fight scene getting kicked on the floor... |
Kabuto Episode 2
LMFAO "You're not Kagami are you?" He just freaking knows before he even sees Kagami knocked out. That right there was damned hilarious. Does she salute him every time she greets him in the morning? Also I just love how as the music starts playing, the doors to the house open and get get the shot almost like we're on a tour. Plus is it just me, or does the exterior look like a house Stephen King would live in? Oh my...that music, the way it was filmed, that scene was, was, perfect. The music fit it like a glove, the way it was filmed was amazing, the emotions in it were great, just an all would perfect scene to me. Kagami seems like a bit of a kid to me. He gets overly excited, he throws tantrums. Should he really be working for an organization like Zect that is pretty serious in what all it does? "Do I have to kill a mother fucker?" Tendou seems like he'd be great at a crowd control job. You know even though I knew the minute she walked into that bathroom what was going to happen, I've got to hand it to the show because that was actually a pretty suspenseful scene. The pacing of it was nice and the music just added to it all. Not as perfect as the scene earlier with Hiyomi, but it came pretty close. Also, is that a pen gun she just made? Strange does not even begin to describe Tendou lady. Well Tendou certainly is the self confident type. So much so that if he works with anybody, he must be above them all. Could you imagine actually going to work and announcing "I am the strongest so you all will be below me, including the managers." You'd probably get fired. Did I just see a 7-Eeleven? This Worm looks just like the last one. Do they all look the same before they molt? Or even after molting do they all look the same? Apparently so. Why do they all look the same? Oh God please tell me he doesn't say this chosen one shit all the time. I don't mind if he says he's the best in the world or anything like that, but I'm sick and tired of people in media saying that they are the chosen one. It's cliched and overused. I like the effect for how the armor is taken off. However I will admit I always found it weird that he practically has to henshin twice to get into his main form. It could just be me but I found that weird and unnecessary. Maybe for this first fight it makes sense, but after that it seems pointless. Not your bike anymore bitch. Favorite.Rider.Kick.Ever! Well episode two is done. And my thoughts of it are relatively the same as I had with the first episode. There wasn't really a story here, so I'll just skip right ahead to the other two areas. The was once again pretty cool. The whole fight against the Worms was really cool, and it got damn awesome when they took it to the road. I can also see why Clock Up makes Tendou a literal God in terms of power. He could out move the damn Flash I do believe. And as I said above, I fucking love Kabuto's Rider Kick. In total, the episode had some great action. The characters were once again, there but a little hard to talk about. Tendou was Tendou and his sister was the same person she was in the first episode. Kagami was shown off a bit more, however my words of him so far are not very nice. I find him to be very childish and a little annoying, both of which are making me not like him. There was also some more Misaki, but like everybody besides Kagami, she was the same as she was the last episode. And that's about it for the characters. So once again, a nice episode that was a fun entertaining ride. I just hope the story starts to pick up soon and that the characters give me more to talk about. |
DK 24. Aw is Kit jealous?
This was probably one of - if not THE best - episode of the whole show so far. It may seem a little late, but the show is really starting to come together and go places. I dunno, everything just feels like it's clicking. From the leaps and bounds in the quality of the acting in and over suit, to the characters feeling closer and closer to their Rider counterparts. It's like the show has finally found its footing and the quality is just ramping up and up. Sadly the problem with this is a lot of the first half of the show feels kinda pointless now, there were episodes that were setting the groundwork for the developments happening now but we have almost half of the Rider count dead already and minus Spear, who leaves his brother behind, they pretty much all died for nothing. That may be the point, but with characters like Thrust and Camo dying pretty much as soon as they were introduced I dunno why the show didn't just cut them out all together. Speaking specifically of the episode, Damn Dragon Knight looks good in gold and black. Onyx's introduction was just awesome, easily one of the best fight sequences in a very long time. Maybe one of the best in the whole series. And then when I think the episodes blown its load in the cold open, we get that SPECTACULAR flashback fight sequence with all the Ventura Riders together. Given what I know about Ouja, and the way Strike was introduced, I'm kinda shocked to see how soft Strike is compared to Xaviax. It isn't so much a bad thing, but with O'Leary's charms and clear enjoyment of his role you sometimes forget that he is this world destroying alien forcing innocent people to kill one another so he can save his own planet. It was nice to get an episode that really focused and highlighted how much of a bastard he really is. |
DK 25.
If you can hold on, and keep up with this shows very unfocused storytelling Kit's character arc really is very enjoyable. I kinda hated him at the start, but following him on this journey I've really grown to love him. Although more action is appreciated, the generally crap editing kinda undermines some of the shows better action moments. For example, the dream sequence featuring Onyx vs Siren was so so so AWESOME but the grainy, low quality Ryuki footage makes it really obvious where the lines begin and end and it's really distracting. I didn't forgive it in the early 90s with MMPR so in 2009 it just seems inexcusable. Couldn't they have at least tried to clean the footage up? Even the American Fights don't come off that great, footage from Ryuki is always edited in as awkwardly as possible and due to budget constraints they edit it so you think you're seeing more than you are, but it's done so poorly you totally notice they are just cutting corners. It also doesn't help that the action is so epic in the Ryuki footage and weirdly static and clunky when in the American fights. |
I still don't understand why they keep adapting Rider shows that are a bajillion years old. DK was made seven years after Ryuki. The target audience would've been in daipers or fetuses when Ryuki was airing. Why not something more recent like Den-O or Kiva?

Kabuto Episode 3
The Worm didn't get defeated, it got slaughtered. There's a difference Kagami. But you are young, so you still have much to learn. But you have too much to learn. Thank you Misaki for what I presume was firing him. Hey look, a Worm that looks different then the rest! These things are like the sect version of the damn T-1000s. Except they don't appear to be able to turn their limbs into weapons, or regenerate, or copy the voices of other people...okay so they are slightly like the T-1000s. Hiyori seems like a slight bitch to me. How is she still employed exactly? Regardless of the country, having an attitude like that towards a customer is not excepted. Why is she giving an attitude to everybody, especially Tendou, somebody who is saying outright that she makes the best mackerel miso around and wants to have more of it? She's just coming off as a bitch who needs an attitude adjustment (insert John Cena joke here). How come they keeping referring to them as the Worm and not the Worms? That doesn't sound all too right to me to be honest. Now if that was the name of the organization then yeah I could see it. But they referring to them all as just Worm, even when there are more then one around. So yeah, why aren't they called the Worms? So by that Kagami means that is whole family got wiped out by Worm and wants to see them dead. And to do so, he joins up with a police/military force. This sounds strangely familiar... Huh so I guess those are pen guns. Really elaborate pen guns. Why did Misaki go undercover? Couldn't she have just gone in and asked to speak with the girl imprisoned? This seems like a little bit too much just to see which girl is the real one. Does Tendou just play that music on repeat? It's always on whenever there's a scene at his house :lol Cover blown. Nice job Kagami. I now officially name Tendou Souji to the most bad ass main rider I have ever seen. EVER! Dude's just strutting through the police station like it's nobody's business. And he's taking care of the guards with even doing all that much. I know I'm only 3 episodes in, but hot damn am I loving Tendou. What a twist! Man Tendou and the Worm must have a thing against amusement parks considering they're wrecking this one to no damn end. You know my parents always say that I have this attitude that the world resolves around me, which I don't. But the next time they say it, I am so using Tendou's line from this episode. It would be too perfect not to use. "It sure is hard being popular. I don't even have time to eat." Dead :lolol Well that's the third episode. How was it? It was like the other two really nice. Though to be honest, this one was a bit better then the last two. There was an actual story this time around that dealt with Yuki and her plight to prove her innocence (well until the twist comes up). It had a nice beginning, middle, and end to it. The pacing was done well too, and fit the story nice and snug. It doesn't really add much to the main story though. However going by the episode 4 preview, this Ryou guy may play an important part. Anyways I thought the story presented in the episode was actually there and done very nicely. The characters still seem a bit not there though outside of Tendou and Kagami. Kagami though in my opinion got a bit of development, but not a whole lot. He is definitely childish, but he can become serious when the time for it arises. Plus it does appear as he has something he's hiding (which I probably called spot on earlier), so that gives him something. As for Misaki, meh. As for Hiyori, she's a bitch with an attitude problem. That's about it character wise for this episode. Like the last two episodes, the action was just so good. The fights are just impressing the hell out of me, and most of it is due to the slow motion/clock up moments. They just looking stunning. My only real gripe with the action this episode is that I wish they would have fought on an actual roller coaster that was moving, and not one frozen by time. But really that's not even a gripe, just something I think would look cool. Once again, the action is great. Three down and I'm liking what I see. This episode like the others was chock full of entertainment, and this time brought a story along with it. Another great episode to put in the cap of Kabuto. |

Blade would have worked so much better, I feel.

DK26.
I actually watched this whole episode without actually writing anything, that has never happened before but this was such a bridge episode. The best scenes were with Kit, as he's probably the best actor in this other than O'Leary. The scene with him talking to his Dad was very powerful, and very believable and the tangible panic in his voice while in the prison cell was also great. Xaviax gets to become a Rider but he does nothing worth mentioning during his time, and the new actor who gets to ADR over the suit sucks. Admittedly the fight in the bookstore was fun even if it was a continuity pit and lacked a certain sense of punch when you compare it to the sense of power featured in the Ryuki footage. And yep, that was Wrath's introductory episode. |

DK 27.
For a show with largely pretty solid, if not a little unfocused, storytelling I was disappointed the No Men come from nowhere and everyone acts like they're some huge deal. Honestly though I guess I'd rather this, than all of the fantastic introductions for things that ultimately end up going nowhere. Huge chunks of Dragon Knight are just made up of wasted potential, honestly. Rewatching this show has not been kind. Kinda makes me wanna rewatch RPM and see how that holds up as it came out around the same time and it's been about the same length of time since I last saw that as well. Not really all that hot on Wrath's suit design, but both he and Siren make feathers awesome - although Siren kinda sucks, Wrath seems a bit more of a badass. There were some really great action sequences in this episode. Quote:
In itself it's great, as it creates very imaginative storytelling, but I can't help but wonder how much better the show could have been if they got to adapt a Rider show with a small cast of core Riders like they clearly wanted. |
Quote:
|
There would be some stark differences given how different the four Riders of Blade are compared to the ten gajillion in Ryuki.
|
DK 28. Wow that episode was really anti-climactic.
I dunno, something about the quality of the effects or the way it's choreographed or I dunno what just makes the American footage feel fake. Ryuki has its fair share of shit CGI, but as you watch Wrath and Sting chase our heroes it feels less like a climactic clashed between power armoured heroes and more like a bunch of people playing LARP. I dunno how to explain it, something about it is just so off. It's a shame too, because Kit's actual escape from the No Men was awesome and it had lots of cool moments that had potential to grow into bigger, greater moments but like a lot of things in this show it just sort of fizzled out. |

Where next on my Rider journey, friends? Should I brave the terrible Hibiki video quality? Should I brave Decade and see if it actually deserves the shit it gets? Or some other series you suggest?
