Looks great. It's based on a book which also got adapted into a Tokusatsu movie in the 1970s. |
I'd watch it!

So for my thoughts about the PR movie, it was mixed. I loved the cast (even though as a purist I'm still iffy on the race change), but yeah the movie is a generic YA movie, which is technically an improvement on usual Power Rangers stuff, but I hate YA stuff.
But my biggest complaint is the handling of the suits. People watch superhero movies for the suits, and having them holding off until the third act was a huge mistake. They made it into a plot point that the Rangers need to learn to work as a team before they can morph. If they changed it to have them actually had been able to morph from the start, and the whole movie was them learning to work together to master the megazord, it would've improved the movie drastically. Second, the action scenes. It was weak. It tells that the practice video on Youtube was far more entertaining than what we got, and I hated that outside of Red, the Rangers don't have weapons. MMPR is iconic for their weapons. And not only that, the Ranger fights are over immediately in favor of CGI Zord fights. Third, the movie failed because of lack of marketing, and the fact that general audience still perceives Power Rangers as a joke. I remember going to the theaters abd it was only 10% full. March had nothing to do with it being a bad month to come, in fact March is the best time for it to come. Because before that, this movie was slated for January, you know, the dead month for movies. Still though it's a shame that the movie failed, it proves that PR is still a niche franchise. |
Regarding the movie Japan Sinks, The first live action movie adaptation in 1973 had Hiroshi Fujioka aka Takeshi Hongo/Kamen Rider Ichigo as one of the major characters, and the re-adaptation in 2006 had Mitsuhiro Oikawa aka Kyoichiro Kuroi/Kamen Rider Sango as a supporting character.

This is a small thing, but after a bit of time for both getting what I needed and setting/orienting the camera, I officially have a rough set up using my phone to stream my transformers tcg box openings to my friends via discord.

Out of curiosity, is there any way to post images on Tokunation aside from the 'insert image' option (which requires you to post URLs to post images) and the 'attach files' option (I'm a bit annoyed at the fact that all the attached files end up inside a box at the bottom of the post).
Can someone please tell me all the different ways to post an image here on Tokunation? Thanks. |

Guess that is why I'm having a love-hate feelings towards the show right now. |

Power Rangers is an inherently goofy concept beyond the likes of normal sci-fi and comic books because of the very method of its existence: it's taking existing footage from a totally different show from a different country and adding in locally filmed segments to try and hodge-podge a series out of. That will never not be obvious and distracting, as well as severely limiting just what the franchise could ever do. In this day an age where story structure and integrity are held to a higher standard (even if few media reach that standard) having a show that can't even be wholly original is going to stand out. |
No show, nor story for that matter, is wholly original. The only thing that matters is execution.
Said execution is of course, subjective, but even so. |
This isn't about creative originality, but objectively, Power Rangers is just re-used footage cut around some new Saved by the Bell footage.
|
And the US Godzilla was an entire pre-existing movie but with footage of Raymond Burr added in, yet many still see it as completely legitimate. I really don't see the big deal.

I've never really done Power Rangers, so I'm probably wading in way over my head here, but I think the Transformers comparison is pretty apt.
Transformers was a hugely popular toyline and TV series for a few years in the 1980s, before vanishing from the public eye. It carried on through a variety of popular incarnations that never quite regained its former widespread acceptance, until a live-action movie attempted to leverage the nostalgia of adults who grew up on the original incarnation. It connected, massively, and allowed for the current franchise ubiquity. Power Rangers was a hugely popular toyline and TV series for a few years in the 1990s, before vanishing from the public eye. It carried on through a variety of popular incarnations that never quite regained its former widespread acceptance, until a live-action movie attempted to leverage the nostalgia of adults who grew up on the original incarnation. It did not connect, keeping the franchise as a bit of an also-ran. Like, I know some folks in their mid-20s and early-30s who still have very strong feelings about the original MMPR stuff (making time each year to see the Rangers who show up for C2E2) in the same way some folks in their 40s and 50s have very strong feelings about G1 Optimus and Megatron. I think someday there'll be a Power Rangers movie that gets that franchise to a higher prominence. There's too much money in it for Hasbro to stop trying, you know? But I think the moment for a MMPR reboot came and went. Anything after this would probably need to be wholly original. Anyway, just my semi-outsider take! If I'm way off-base, let me know! |

Both franchises now being owned by Hasbro and having similar toylines (LC and Classified) makes it even moreso a comparison now. |
From my little perspecitve, Power Rangers is in a much more solid place than GI Joe. FOr a start, Power Rangers actually existed when I was a kid, and still feels like it's aiming towards that kid market today, whereas the new GI Joe stuff I've seen feels more like it's hitting the nosalgia market.
Plus, ya know, GI Joe is violently American. Doesn't help the brand much worldwide. |

Because think of it, if Power Rangers becomes successful (or, you know, successful-er than usual) it would help Kamen Rider, Ultraman, Garo, or maybe even Sentai itself, to have a chance for success worldwide. |
Is MMPR the most well-known PR series to the general public? (asked a stupid question)

I think the issue with Power Rangers stems from lack of ambition and creativity. Saban had initial success because it was literally lightning in a bottle. The stars aligned all at the right moment and the show became an unpredictable success for what it was. Every new incarnation of Power Rangers is Saban or someone else attempting to replicate that flash in the pan. Which just is not happening. The only way to move the franchise forward is to balance nostalgia with something new and not rely too heavily on trends.
The 2017 film failed because not only was it too far removed from the original while still maintaining its basic concept, but it also tried to hard to be another Transformers or Iron Man. Studios fear the helmet and spandex for some reason. If the franchise wants to have widespread success it cannot rely on what's trendy, but instead embrace what makes it unique, embrace the cheese, while building on top of it. World build. Establish a proper lore. Bring back familiar faces besides a cameo. Take familiar designs and build off of them. There's this new concept for a film by Hasbro making the rounds of a rebooted MMPR team that time travels, and has a female red ranger. Why? Bring back Time Force if you're going the time travel route. Why break what's already established? In my opinion, they need to bring back the original MMPR actors on an epic quest where they interact with some other previous rangers, and lead into the Shattered Grid story line. |

I really want to do something with Master Convertor and Blitzwing, that seems like it could be really fun Horribull and Sky Shadow are the new "meta" so I'm going to try something with those Off-Road Patrol is gonna get an attempt. Wolfwire is going to get paired with the air strike patrol for a deck. On more challenging note, I'm going to try to make a Bike Gang deck Generally I want to try a lot of things, so fingers crossed I follow through. |

Huh, I didn't know Ryuta Tasaki directed Lost Galaxy and Lightspeed Rescue. I thought Koichi Sakamoto was the only one with experience on Power Rangers.
