I kind of agree, but I think beating a centuries old Dalek onslaught with deus ex machina regeneration powers is a cop out of RTD proportions.

Finally finished.
A few thoughts. It was a very solid episode overall. I loved the idea of 11 dying of old age and the way they aged him he looked a tad bit like Hartnell. Now the Tardis hopping back and forth was silly but a necessary device to move the story I suppose. I too am frustrated that Gallifrey would appear to simply disappear again. But the way in which they restored his regenerations was very welcome. Here's where I'll disagree with some people. The appearance of Amy was entirely unnecessary and killed the moment for me. I didn't care for Karen Gillan and Arthur Darville outside of series 5 anyway. But to loop everything around back to her just seemed to take away from the impact of that brilliant speech 11 was giving. And what a brilliant speech it was! I understand that Amy was integral to his character but I just felt it wasn't necessary to have her appear. Amelia running around as a child would have been fine. Of course the Capaldi appearance can't be judged on 20 seconds or so :lol But I'll say he seemed fine. It'll be interesting to see what a regeneration reset does to him. Having apparently no clue how to fly the Tardis may handicap the types of stories they could tell. But let's just assume he can't fly it because that version of the Tardis desktop is too odd for him. If we want to talk about regen power as this huge destructive force, I'm starting to get more of a Highlander Quickening feeling from it. It's like every time it becomes more and more powerful. To the point that it's preposterous. But I enjoyed the surprise of the Daleks at the regenration. And finally THANK YOU for repairing that garbage plot point from Asylum. The greatest enemies of the Doctor not knowing who he is? Ridiculous. |
I hated Amy, she is easily my least favourite companion. I hated how everyone judged her simply on the scale of how much they wanted to bone her, and I hated the way that Moffat became so obsessed with her it basically became her own show. The point of the companions is to be human, and normal, and to be our avatar into the world of Doctor Who.
Anyone wonder if the Doctor is starting from fresh, literally? He went into that huge rant about not forgetting which seemed a weird thing to say as the Doctor never forgets his lives. But if this is a fresh cycle of Regenerations, everything could be starting from scratch... So he will forget that life, and all the others, and hence why he couldn't fly the TARDIS. |
I think you're reading too much into the can't fly the TARDIS thing, it was more likely just his post-regeneration madness. There's no way they'll start from scratch just because he has a new regeneration cycle.
|
At least I'm not the only one who was sick to death of Amy :lol
|
I worry about anyone who still liked her by the end of season 6/beginning of season 7. By then she was just there to make Rory better.

But damn it all they had to use "raggedy man" one more time didn't they? Another example of the child like fairy tale/story book crap that killed a big chunk of Smith's run for me. It would have been fine if he'd just seen her on the top level of the Tardis and smiled and then she was gone. But no she actually had to say that again :( |

When I think over New Who companions, it's amazing how little I remember about any of them, other than Donna who stuck in my mind by bucking the trend of the endless streams of companions which were now basically the Doctor's girlfriends in an unintentional perhaps, but still utterly shameless, way of sexing up the show. Especially by the time it got to Clara and the Doctor dribbling over, keep that shit out of my show.
|
It's a Moffat production. Blame the endless parade of "I fancy the Doctor" on that. That's is easily the thing I hate about his time as show runner. He's just ... so damn backwards when it comes to "silly women" falling all over his "super badass male protagonist". Can't even keep it out of Sherlock for goodness sake!
Anyway, that's more than enough of that. I really loved this episode. Must admit I had the jitters from all the damn teasing, but then I was really quite merry by that point ;) Perhaps the episode lacked from having so many plots to tie up, just a little rickety... then again I can't fault it for that because, in my honest opinion, Moff juggled those loose ends far better than I expected. I had monumentally low expectations going into it though. AND it's Doctor Who, if its on tv and it's not totally awful.. I felt it was a lovely send off for 11. Chock full of the stuff "what" Matt Smith does best as an actor. Hallucinating Amy.. well yeah, it's the Moff I totally expected some kind of ridiculousness along that line. The big reveal about the Silence was just fine for me too. Build up pushed it a little close to tipping over the line into underwhelming. As a scifi writer I love the idea of genetically engineered confessional priests. ... but I don't for a second think we've seen the last of them. You may think this is a fresh start, but we still have Clara... and the fact Stevie-boy is in charge still... We can only hope that 12 is a striking enough change from Dr Matt-Rubber-Limbs to make a difference on the hackneyed plots of anti-feminism. Let's be honest it's all still a bit.... MOFFAAAAATTTTTT! -shakes fist- Got to say though, super excited for Series 8. Peter Capaldi has a just awesome way of saying the stupidest lines with a rather scary scowl on his face. I mean, the kidneys line? Spot on delivery!. If that isn't a bloody brilliant recipe for humour, I don't know what is. Also.. he kept the accent! Props! |
I'm suprised this hasn't been said yet...
No love for Handles? |
I thought Handles was disturbing. Given the Doctor's hatred for the Cybermen, the fact he carried around a Cyberman head and used it for information seemed really off to me. I know he says some handwave thing like 'lol no person attached nomores!' but that didn't really make it cool with me.

To be honest I would have liked it more if he knocked the head off a Cyberman in one episode and started carrying it around as a sort of screw you from then on. The doctor's re-programmed robot butler? I could have lived with that. But let's be honest, it was rare to see Matt do "screw you" when there's a laugh or two to be had. Ah well, I suppose it could have been a nod to a certain castaway and his football. |
Odd though it may have been. I loved Handles :o
I immediately demand a 6" "Old" 11th with Handles accessory |
The Handles thing was one of my favorite parts, plus arriving at the Dalek's cruiser with an eye stalk, then hitting the Cyberman vessel with Handles...made me smile. I also like how this Doctor got to die from old age (if you can't do anything right, do it yourself), so now three have lived their full life spans (First, War Doctor and him). I just turned off my brain for part of it and just had fun.
Oh and if Amy was popular because of wanting to bone...umm...Clara should be higher...just saying... Also Capalidi..."New Kidneys! I don't like the color!" If that was improve...and look up his scenes from a movie called The Loop (not around kids, harsh language). If he brings that energy oh lord can NOT WAIT for next season! |

Plus the new Cybermen are so damn robotic I'd be surprised anyone new to the show believes there are still people inside of them. Quote:

But I figure what with the "Other"/8th figure we're getting in 6" scale that we could possibly maybe have Old 11 with Handles. But probably not, ever :( |
I was able to find a stream for Time of The Doctor and I absolutely loved it! That one part where you see the eleventh walking with the explosions going on in the background and those three Silents walking behind him looked awesome and terrifying at the same time.

I know Character Options has more or less abandoned the 5" line but John Hurt gave me hope. |
I'd love a Wooden Cyberman figure, but minus the Daleks, I've always found the Doctor Who figures utter rubbish and even more abysmal now they are squashed down.

I don't know what it is that makes them not sell. Season 6 had a god awful selection of figures that shelf warmed hard, and the classic releases are so limited, expensive and (in some cases) obscure that its only appealing to a VERY niche market. The new scale seems to be doing well, so I guess that's what's here to stay until someone else takes the license :( A wooden Cyberman is an inevitability, but it's undoubtedly be a repaint of the previously released 3.75" Cyberman. Which to its credit is probably the best new scale figure released so far. Quote:

On a side note, I've been having some fun with my new McGann figure :D http://i.imgur.com/13VCvul.jpg http://i.imgur.com/TBkvCpy.jpg |
While I enjoyed Matt's performance, I was fairly disappointed with the Time of the Doctor, overall. Tasha Lem is yet another in a line of Moffat-penned female characters that leads me to believe he is a sub. I won't go into any further details as not to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.
I know some people like Moffat's work, but I am so ready for a new showrunner. |
People like Moffat? Who? Moffat himself? He certainly seems arrogant enough, calling audiences 'stupid' for not being able to follow his labyrinthine storytelling that he himself can't seem to keep track of.
Tasha Lem was a low point in a sea of low points in Time of The Doctor, that sours more in my mind the more I think on it. Tasha Lem was just a thinly disguised River Song, who has to be one of the worst creations in the entirety of Doctor Who. I'd rather play Monopoly with Daleks than ever have to watch an episode with River Song in it again. |

I like Moffat a lot when it comes to Sherlock because his writing style works well for it, it's only with Who I find him hit and miss (although he's had a good few hits of late).
Speaking of which, I should get a thread going for that... |
When it comes to Sherlock, Moffat is king. Love love love what he's done with it. But he's been very hit or miss as the Doctor Who showrunner. There are large portions of Series 5 & 6 and nearly all of 7 that I can't stand.
|
I think season seven was Smith's best run as Moffat got rid of Amy and River Song.

The Snowmen wins just for being the first Christmas special since 2005 that wasn't either average or awful :lol

But I will admit, there was still nothing all that great about season seven. Cramming every damn story into a single episode harmed pretty much every good idea, and as much as I liked Clara she was like a less bolshy River Song in the Doctor's girlfriend nonsense. |
I just found myself thinking of something else that's barely Who related. I don't like Steven Moffat on Doctor Who much, that's very true. However am I the only person here whose seen a show he created called Coupling? That was a great show until he fumbled the 4th season/series finale and went from a crazy & funny series to one with a ridiculously deep ending.
If you haven't watched it, it's a bit like Friends but a little more explicit. It was a fun show with some truly funny characters. One of the few instances where I really like Moffat as well. |
