just to make sure, the Orb Chronicles Ultraman show that premiered today is like a 'best of' or something, right? So...just watch Orb? This isn't like a part 2, and if you've already seen Orb you're not missing anything?
(I haven't seen Orb yet but I'd rather watch the Original than a weird lumped together 'best of' collection, which is what this new Orb show sort of sounded like.) These clip shows always remind me of Godzilla All Monsters Attack where the little boy is kidnapped and falls asleep dreaming of Godzilla, and his dreams are just a bunch of reused stock footage. |
I got the first volume of the manga, I really like it even if it's fight scene doesn't have much dialogue and that it's more Kamen Rider. Hope the animated version comes sooner than later
|
Sorry if I'm irrelevant, but did you know, one of the stars of Ultraman, Hideo Ishiguro, was in Gokusen Season 3

Where do I start watching ultra man? Series wise? I never really knew what show was a good starting point.

I started with the movie (Ultraman the Next), then watched the Zero Trilogy,..which I didn't wholly understand but I liked it and understood enough to catch what was going on (I just didn't recognize all the characters), then I started watching the original series and 80, and like Switchblade mentions Ultraman Max,..and I think Nexus (which tied into The Next movie). Mebius is another really good one.
Now I jump around depending on if I'm in the mood for Showa Ultraman or Heisei Ultraman. I'd say the original series, or Max, or The Next movie is a good starting point. It's really not a super complicated premise that's hard to understand. There's a lot of 'related' characters eventually that you come to understand their relations to each other, but by and large each series is going to be about an Alien that posses a human. That Human grows large and fights giant monsters as an Ultraman. That's the core of Ultraman. Max or Mebius, (or both) probably would be a really good starting point though. Or the The Next (2004) movie. |
the original is easy to get -dated a little but still fun, some of the stuff the science patrol does is rather hilarious
|
the original IS fun. I hope now that Tsuburaya finally has their rights back we can get HD versions of it.
I love the episode where Fuji is a giant. Hahahaha https://i.imgur.com/JpaGvF7.jpg |
i just like the classic fights and stuff though i do wish they would extend the ultraman time limit a little. Its always been 3 mins give or take as a way to save on the effects buget but things are cheaper to produce now so why not find a way to say they can now stay giant for 5 mins like device that revitalizes them used by the humans to give them an extra job support to recharge the hero when he is running low on time
|
I've never actually timed it but I'm not convinced they 100% stick to the time limit.

I think the original '66 Ultraman stuck to that rule, but most of the other Ultra shows are pretty flexible about it.
And some of the Ultras that don't really have a human form the timer is sort of a non-issue. Like Riku in Geed I don't even understand why he has a timer, (though his is sort of a non-issue as well),..he's not human. Now Leito/Salaryman who's possessed by Zero, definitely should have issues with the timer since he actually is a human hosting an Ultra. |

Slow motion shots of flips, kicks, taunting, and pants wetting do not count against color timers. It's assumed that any wacky hijinks your non-ultra companions get up to are happening at the same time.

Just finished Geed today in one sitting. Its incredible that after mostly ignoring the Ultra-series for most of my toku viewing habits, Orb and Geed have been better than most recent Rider series in the 2010s. I like Geed a little better since it does have a more serious tone than Orb (when you think about it, Orb came down to a somewhat vague dick measuring contest between Gai and Juggler) and I love the cast of Geed more. Truly hope Ultraman 2018 delivers on this back to back excellence.
My one critique if you could call it that though was where was the Donshine episode? ! |

MOA!!!! |
Im actually watching orb right now and i have to agree its not as good as geed. Plus i like that instead of just beating a monster to earn his mode changes he has to get people to believe in him and want to help him. I just find it better than power ups given out and the weaker plots of orb thus far -still working through it, not say orbs bad but its not as good as geed though there are various things i would fix if i was writing it but im not.

Ultraman Leo is now available for free on Shout Factory TV: http://www.shoutfactorytv.com/series/ultraman-leo
This is curious, but I don't know a lot about Ultraman! What were all the shows in the Ultra Series (in order), what years did they originally air, and how popular were they? I know Crunchyroll has some of them, including Leo! |
Ultra Q (1966)
Ultraman (1966–1967) Ultra Seven (1967–1968) The Return of Ultraman (1971–1972) Ultraman Ace (1972–1973) Ultraman Taro (1973–1974) Ultraman Leo (1974–1975) The Ultraman (1979-1980) Ultraman 80 (1980–1981) Ultraman: Towards the Future (1990) Ultraman: The Ultimate Hero (1993) Ultraman Tiga (1996–1997) Ultraman Dyna (1997–1998) Ultraman Gaia (1998–1999) Ultraman Neos (2000–2001) Ultraman Cosmos (2001–2002) Ultra Q: Dark Fantasy (2004) Ultraman Nexus (2004–2005) Ultraman Max (2005–2006) Ultraman Mebius (2006–2007) Ultraseven X (2007) Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle (2007–2008) Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle: Never Ending Odyssey (2008-2009) Ultraman Retsuden (2011–2016) Neo Ultra Q (2013) Ultraman Ginga (2013) Ultraman Ginga S (2014) Ultraman X (2015-2016) Ultraman Orb (2016) Ultraman Zero: The Chronicle (2017) Ultraman Geed (2017) Ultraman Orb: The Chronicle (2018) ULTRAMAN (2019) source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra_Series *Ultra Q is the first show of the series but Ultraman isn't in it. His first appearance is in the '66 Ultraman show that followed Ultra Q. |

Thanks for the list! P.S.: From what I can tell, Leo has appearances from Ultra Seven, despite having additional heroes to chose from! Why center so heavily on one instead of the others? |
Probably because of how ridiculously popular Ultraseven is. Ultraman may be the flagship character for the franchise but Seven is the most beloved series by far.
|
So was Ultra Q something of a "Mission Force vs. Alien Monsters" show? And then Ultraman comes in and takes over the franchise, save for Ultra Seven which occasionally takes over in the fandom OVER Ultraman!!! That about sum it up?

I only saw an episode or 2 of the og Ultra Q and the show has a X-Files before X-Files was a thing vibe for me. That said I hope to watch the rest of the show in the future.
|
Don't forget to watch Ultraman Max and Ultraman Mebius.
....so good. |
Just finished watching the first episode of Leo!
If felt as though the Narrator spent more time talking than anyone! Why is Ultraseven the only past hero given focus here? What about the others? Will they appear later? I concede to the idea that Ultraseven was popular, but that doesn't mean a single hero should be singled-out as the ONLY other protector!!! Unless I miss my mark in timing, Leo was airing around the same time as Kamen Rider Stronger and Goranger!!! How did they fair against each other in the ratings game? After the initial battle, Ultraseven cannot transform due to a leg injury and his Ultra Eye burns as a result! Why does the henshin device react so negatively after a serious injury to the user? Does it know that he will not be sufficient in battle? |

The second episode didn't add as many as I would've thought (though blowing-up one of the special MAC vehicles this quick wasn't expected). The Magma Alien is a...unique villain! I hope Magma does a little more than send monsters, fight with arm weapons, and not speak! |
