I'm haven't watched much of Ninninger, but I feel that the reasoning of "It's getting better! I promise!" holds little weight when everyone is viewing it at the same time.
This isn't a case of years old series that people have seen before like Zyuranger, Dairanger, or Goseiger, where "It gets better" is something that many people already know and can attest to. If you feel the series isn't holding your attention or is just a grind to watch weekly, feel free to drop it. If a series isn't interesting the viewer, and watching it seems to be more of a chore, they shouldn't feel shackled and continue watching just because someone else insists they do. As for breaking the mold, internal conflict can be found in many Sentai since Jetman, the most recent that comes to mind being Goseiger. |
you know, I've watched up to episode 10, and I gotta say.
this series is NOT as bad as I've seen a lot of people make it out to be. I'll admit there could be some more episodes on some members. but the max for that is 2. I feel this isn't a show that's not trying to be deep, or trying to be something that stands out. it's a show just trying to be fun. I love what they're doing, and episodes 9 and 10 were really entertaining. and I'm loving Starninger. |
I think the problem many people have with Ninninger is caused by what they expected the show to be. The last three shows (starting with Kyoryuger) were very similar in tone and comedy- basically because it worked in Kyoryu and Toei still wants to play it safe after the whole Go-Busters story.
Many people hoped that Ninninger, due to the very asian designs, would be more like Shinkenger, which many people still consider one of the best Sentai evuurrrrr, because it's dark and... dark!!111! Ehhhh anyway. Lately people have been crying for a different type of Red because many people like stoic characters like ShinkenRed. They consider Daigo, Right and Takaharu the same character type (which isn't true, despite some similarities). Also, many reactions to Toqger have been REALLY bad and people who disliked Toq also often don't like Ninnin. But let's face the facts, guys... this is what Sentai is like these days, at least for now. Either try and give it a chance or stop watching for a while if you can't bear it. |
I think some fans are still reluctant to accept that lighter, more comedic seasons are the norm now. They tried more serious and dark with Go-Busters and they consider that to be a flop (although the ratings were better than now). I think we should not compare the seasons to each other; accept them as a single narrative and find the good and bad that they give us as a standalone show. Also, the expectations should be curbed a little bit, this is a kids' show that comes on at 0730 on Sunday. A time slot like that doesn't usually lend itself to being ultra serious and dark.

Honestly I have no problem with Ninninger, that may or mat not have anything to do with a certain blue and gold japanese cowboy. But its been a fun ride so far. Quote:

Eh, Sentai just isn't holding my attention recently with these shows. This is a kids show, but when a show just isn't entertaining, and it's other entry's were, just to me says that's it's gone down in quality. Heck Dino Charge has been WAY more entertaining to me than the past 2-3 years of Sentai. I guess for now I'll just stick to rider and PR in terms of Toku shows.

There are many people who are still entertained by Ninninger so it CAN entertain people. Just not you. But that doesn't automatically make it bad. |
The only objectively bad one was Sun Vulcan, after all :p
|
Don't remind me of that one, please xD
Though admitted, Hiba as Vul Eagle sure helped the show improved a bit. But just a bit. |
I have never heard anyone defend Sun Vulcan. Usually, most seasons have someone that is willing to list out all the good things the season did and what potential it had, even if it didn't reach it's full potential, but not for Sun Vulcan and I think that means something.
|
I haven't heard of anyone who has Sun Vulcan as his favorite season either, except for fictional characters (Akagi/AkibaRed). But I think it's fairly popular in Japan, so if I meet someone who like the show there, I'll let you know.

Okay I gotta ask am I the only person alive who likes MagiRanger? The whole idea was great and while Mystic Force had ups and downs wasn't there issues with the writers that season anyway?

Yeah Mystic Force was great storyline wise I just wish they had pulled it off a bit better

haha maybe its just my friends who don't then. I just seem to get a vibe that not a lot of people cared for Magiranger.

Magiranger is one of my favourites.

Um...I found it dull...

I wouldn't call Magiranger dull.
Grating, inconsequential, immature, unfunny, superficial, and annoying... those descriptors are more my speed. **braces for the inevitable barrage of rotten fruit.** |
Well, Magiranger is, like many other early 2000 Sentai shows, not very "brave" (no Kyoryu pun intended), it doesn't takes many risks. While it does use magic as a new theme, it doesn't do something outstanding with it. It has solid writing, nice designs and some great acting (Hiroya Matsumoto did an amazing job as Tsubasa, for example), but it isn't as special as it could have been.

But you're right -- the show doesn't forge much new ground for the franchise (unless you count all of Mandora Boy's awkward musical numbers for babies, which I prefer not to think about). I feel like I've seen everything it attempts done much better in other series. |
The designs of Magi are definitely nice. Hell Wolozard is one of my favorites ever. But that plot is just, yeah. It's kinda sad that they couldn't do a whole lot with the magic theme, as it has the potential to lead to some really spectacular stuff.

I think this is more a matter of taste, but as a person who grew up with musicals of pretty much any possible kind, the music in Magi was very enjoyable to me. Yes, the lyrics where "childish"- but Sentai is still a children's TV show, after all. |
I will admit that they did fall flat plot wise with Magi. But I always imagined them being a team able to jump into any situation (cough cough Legend War) and still be able to fight. Either way in the end its all Opinion based right?

I love musicals too, but Mandora Boy felt like something ported over from Dora The Explorer. I know sentai is "for kids," but you can't deny that he feels a little Pre-K. |

Don't get me wrong -- this is a show for kids and should not be taken seriously. But I feel like Mandora Boy is a character that panders to a very young audience. A major reason I love sentai is that it respects children and avoids pandering to them, so when I see it happen, I'm pretty turned off. |

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jUhg5fo7dyE There's also the "Peeing Retsu" Chant from the end of Gekiranger Episode 15. And the Ovirapoo Zyudenchi. And then there's all the audience surrogate kid characters from Kou in Dairanger to Nozomu in Goseiger. And I'm not knocking them as a whole, I'm just saying that a lot of the more kiddy stuff can come out of them because, you know, they're the audience surrogates. |

I guess because it's not in every episode of the show, so it's more easily block-out-able. And it's featured in a series of which I'm otherwise quite fond. So the lesson here is that if Magiranger weren't so specifically unappealing to me, I maybe wouldn't have had such a huge problem with Mandora Boy. Quote:
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying kiddy is bad. Kiddy stuff is an inextricable part of Sentai's appeal. I'm saying that the TYPE of kiddy that Mandora Boy represents is annoying to me, personally, and feels like a rare instance of Toei pandering to young children. Though it might not be so rare -- I just haven't seen the other shows that feature such blatant instances. |

Now what I was going to ask is which mech has the weirdest design, ninninger not included. |
I think shinkenger has the weirdest, if only for their combined mech.
it's just so messy. |

And it tends to look kinda ugly after a while. |
