At the very least the lack of Hiromu and Yoko's parents, couple with their stern expressions, should have tipped that off that they aren't in the best of moods. This is true actually. Inoue confirmed it sometime ago in a magazine interview that only 30 episodes were ever planned. It's early ending wasn't really such, seeing as it was intentional. They just didn't plan accordingly for a shorter story.
