Don't get me wrong. I loved Gokaiger. It was a great series and I would gladly rewatch it.
But it's ending was on par with Double's in terms of terribleness and it doesn't quite deserve all the praise it gets.

We're back to the whole Green Lantern movie race track argument. People say that was stupid and could think of something better, but when asked, just say, "well I could do better."

There's a reason why that argument has and will always fail. "You do better" is never a good defense. So, just because I, the viewer, think a scene was dumb, it's completely justified if I, once again, the viewer, can't come up with something to replace it? It's the same thing as walking to a movie reviewer and telling him "Well, let's see you do better" just because he criticized a movie. If the only justification for the scene is "Because I didn't think up something better", then there's still a problem. I, specifically, just don't know how to solve it.

So having a female red ranger manes something happened? Actually, you are right, that was big in Shinkenger. So big that it was the only thing that happened in Shinkenger. I really wish Shinkenger was better, but unlike Gokaiger, Shinkenger did not live up to its self. Gokaiger was about the search for the grand powers from the start and that is what we got. Shinkenger just did the routine just to do the routine until the last 6 episodes of the show.

Like I said, I can't quite compare them. But until the Basco part, Gokaiger was just par for the course as well. "Let's Navigate Treasure", cameo, Gokaigers suck Marvelous's dick, new power. Next episode. All Sentai do this apparently, though.
So basically, why does Gokaiger get a free ride when it comes to this aspect compared to others?

And yes, you are right, Gokaiger was fanwank, which was the point of the show. That is why it was made for its anniversary and that is what they said it would be from the get go. If you expected different, then that is your fault.

I expected Pirates. I got a pirate designs. I expected strong villains. I got whatever Walz Gils was. I expected awesome mechs. I got the most tacked on mech fights I could ever imagine.
I got awesome cameos, and that was nice. But all I did was try to transition in from Kamen Rider and Power Rangers, expecting Sentai to be on the same level, higher so than PR. I was mistaken.


I cannot comment on Double's ending since I have not watched the show yet, but look back at the last several series' endings. Maybe Double's ending being considered great has to do with how lackluster several of the past series' endings were. Honestly, if the Japanese do not know how to write something, it is a truly good ending. When it comes to Japanese endings, you have to lower the standards based on what has been brought out before.

Why? If the series is great but the ending it poor, that's perfectly acceptable. It's fine if not every aspect of something is amazing. My problem comes from being told that the ending is just as good as the rest of the series, which is what I'm being told here.

Take The Dark Knight for example. It is the greatest comic book movie ever made. It is one of the greatest movies ever made. However, there is no way Dark Knight Rises is going to live up to it, so you have to lower your expectations of it. It is going to be an incredible movie, this year's best movie (or nothing lower than 2nd best), but it is NOT going to be TDK.

TDK is a great movie. But we obviously don't hold it to the same light. Subjective opinions aside, I'm not lowering my expectations for the ending just because the writer doesn't know how to write it. Does that set myself up for disappointment? Fine. But that's not solely my fault. It's the writer's, who doesn't know how to properly write a story.

Well, keep in mind that overall Gokaiger is more of an anniversary series than a pirate series. While Bourkenger was also an anniversary series, it did not incorporate tribute episodes from past sentai series like Gokaiger did. The occurrences of those tribute episodes obviously hindered its ability to tell a cohesive story because they have to have a new encounter with a sentai alumni almost every other episode, and while they tried to tie them with their search for the Greatest Treasure, ultimately it feels great at times and also jarring in others. I think Gokaiger started off great, but got slowed and even weaked in the middle, before Ohranger's tribute put it back on track for a great finish to end the series.

It is full of characters and conversations that make you think, top notch acting, amazing action sequences, an incredible score that gets your blood pumping, makes you think about society, all while finally doing Batman and Joker correctly on the big screen. It goes up there with movies like Lord of the Rings, Clockwork Orange, Shawshank Redemption, Inception, and The Maltese Falcon.
