Calling them perfect and some of the best is highly overrating them IMO.
They are good and extremely fun movies, but suffer from severe flaws. "Guardian of the Universe" is so decent that it is forgettable, I watched the movie recently and I hardly remember a single thing other than the Gyaos and the silly plans of the military to catch/end it. The Atlantis-theory they bring up with this movie is really nice but it never goes anywhere besides giving Gamera a back-story. "Awakening of Irys" is too strange and confusing for its own good, and the monster fights aren't very fun to watch. The only interesting character, the girl who hates Gamera and has nightmares is completely screwed up with the Irys-thing, because as soon as Irys shows up the girl doesn’t matter anymore, even though the plot wants you to think that she does. But she turns into a plot-tool and her feelings are completely irrelevant which is a damn shame. Having the girl grow a monster out of hatred and spite that she can control instead of simply fueling it with her emotions would’ve been much more interesting. "Attack of Legion" is the best of the 3 IMO, the monster is memorable, the early attacks on the humans are surprisingly scary and the action scenes with Gamera are really good. It's also one of the few Toku-movies where the military is generally competent, makes good decisions and in the end works together with the good monster. Without having a giant robo to take action in the fight themselves. But in the end none of the Gamera Heisei movies come even close to beating Godzilla in his prime IMO. Especially the late Heisei Godzillas and some of the Millennium ones. I would still recommend them for Kaiju fans, they are much better than the silly Gamera "Friend of all Children"-shit that came after the first few movies, and the three Heisei movies are definitely Gamera at its best, but I would still choose Godzilla over them every time. I guess you could call them some of the best if you refer to the fact that there is such a small selection of Kaiju-movies to choose from after the 80's and 90's, but I would still rate them more realistically. |
I wouldn't say they are perfect, but they are some of the best Kaiju films around, especially the third one. Not to mention they put all of the 90s Godzilla movies to shame. Unlike Toho, Daiei actually cared about making sure the miniatures looked realistic and that the monsters could actually move. The Gamer movies were more than just laser light shows.

Confusing characters, lackluster monster fights, setups that go nowhere – no matter how good your miniatures are, if you only use them for a couple of minutes and for like one big fight it doesn’t really matter. |
The Gamera trilogy are hands down my favourite kaiju movies, with Guardian of the Universe being my personal favourite of the three.
The only Godzilla movie that comes close in terms of actual quality I think is GMK, which can't be a coincidence since they all share the same director. |
Man, I just realized I never finished the trilogy. Damn. Seems I missed out.

However, my opinion may change once I review the trilogy, we'll see. Nevertheless, I may be a Godzilla fan first and a Gamera fan second, but that doesn't mean I'm going to ignore the garbage like GvsSpaceG or GvsMegalon. |
Is it really fair to bring up Vs Megalon? That's from Godzilla's infamous low point, not one of the bad movies from a rather decent line up, like Vs. Space Godzilla...
