I like that Sentai from 2012-2017 has been trying new things or retrying stuff from decades ago. But it never goes all the way with these new things; the novelty wears off and is replaced with the same ol' same ol' it's been doing for years.
Go-Busters: a nice throwback to 90s Sentai in feel and with the mechas. I didn't care for Red's chicken-phobia, but it's a decent show overall. Kyoryuger: first show since Changeman without a yellow. Some good ideas (legacy heroes, the concept of Deboss) but an awful show. Annoying characters and horribly designed villains doing wacky anime hijinks with occasional breaks for "story". A stupid use of a musical theme. (Samba? Why samba of all things??) A chore to watch. ToQger: first orange-colored hero since Battle Fever J, color swapping. This one is a surprising gem in an otherwise lackluster decade. I genuinely enjoyed it. Except for the Rainbow Line crew and IMMAGGINNAAAAAAATTIIOOOOOON being treated like the Force. The color swapping had no practical use, but I liked how Kobayashi and Co. created uses for them, from distractions to extending the time limit in the Shadow Towns. Ninninger: first pink-white combo since Changeman. A good change in the family Sentai where they're cousins instead of siblings. Again, some good ideas, Shurikenjin is unique, but overall very bland and not well paced. Plot points are introduced at random and/or are forgotten for long stretched until the very end. The twist at the end is never even hinted at beforehand. Takaharu is irritating when he's "on fire" (his actor can't even say the line convincingly, for crying out loud). Zyuohger: first time using those team colors, Yamato and Misao's alternate modes. Same problems as Ninninger. I like that on the one hand they did the "can never go home again" plot more justice than Goseiger did, but on the other hand there wasn't as much emotional pull as even ToQger. Plus I don't care for their take on the Zyumen and Zyuland: just an alternate species rather than, say, guardian deities of wildlife, which frankly would make more sense than a whale man somehow being an ancestor to elephants, tigers, etc. Misao and Uncle Mario are annoying. I have not yet seen Kyuranger. In fact, the running theme of this era of Sentai can be "annoying support characters". Almost all of them engage in behavior that you'd see in a nuthouse passed off as comedy. |
Hey I take heavy offense to the Kyoryuger villains being poorly designed. I really dislike the show but it has some of my favorite monster designs. rest about it is correct tho
Also the quality of the supporting characters is dependent on what you think is entertaining. I liked Mario and the Rainbow Line crew, and I'd call grandpa and dad ninjas some of the best parts of Ninninger. |

...I think Mario was a great supporting character. His antics were dumb at first, but his fatherly role really cemented him as a great part of the cast.
Hilltop is also pretty great. I wouldn't mind for him to become a ranger, either~ |
Honestly Kyoryuger is dumb fun and gets far too much hate. Never understood the hatred other than Daigo taking a bit too much spotlight without using it. Just a bit though, everyone else gets their moments to shine and character development. Also anyone who doesn't like Misao in Zyuohger probably just wanted another typical 'badass' Ranger. Misao's incredibly unique and when there's that 'repressed feelings' monster I just felt even more sorry for him though Leo had a good moment there

Come to think of it, reason I liked Kyoryuger was probably because of Nossan and his dad jokes, so Daigo did not bother me as much cause I was more focused on Nossan. |

I didn't want Misao to be a "badass". I wanted Misao to be a likeable character. Misao is an example of when a character exists just to sell toys; from his super vague backstory it was clear that the writers didn't really know what to do with him.

By the way, this comment of "It's your opinion" is redundant and pointless. Everything said by everyone here is an opinion and it's always expressed as a statement. "It's your opinion!" is always lobbed at something the responding person disagrees with as though that's an actual point. |
