Kamen Rider Zero-One has an explicitly non-binary Rider, so it isn’t like Kamen Rider hasn’t already acknowledged that there are people out there besides straight men and women who watch and enjoy the show and would love to see themselves represented. Hell, although Naki’s the first canon LGBT character, their actor, Satsuki Nakayama, is the third LGBT cast member I can think of, after the actress who played Yu Kamimura, the Doughnut Shop Hungry managed (a trans-girl, who transitioned after filming wrapped), and the actor who played Onari (non-binary, like Nakayama). Expanded social models would not be new to Kamen Rider at all.
Not to mention the gay love scene in Rider Time Ryuki... |
James Gunn likes Ultraman as well. I'm not surprise given his taste in pop culture.

People have been hating on SJWs for the last 10 years now and it really needs to stop. People act like SJWs are ruining everything when it's just them being completely fucking clueless. Art has always been political since day 1 and people always been offended by stuff. You have plenty of people on the right that are no different from SJWs, and they refuse to admit it. People who say that art has never been political until the 2010s probably only watch dumb stuff movies and shows that never deal with any real-world issues. Quote:

I don't think this fear is entirely unmerited, since Western studios do "political" stuff with a super heavy handed-ness from time to time.
Thankfully, KR has treated their politics with a more subtle hand so they don't make the story jarring and very much feel like a natural progression of the series or story. Though I do question making Thouser a "white man bad" character. |

Speaking as someone who has been called an "SJW" for my beliefs (apparently wishing media wouldn't further stereotypes that literally get people killed makes me some kind of deranged radical?), I really don't think there's any reason to worry about Kamen Rider.
I mean, everyone loves to fear "cancel culture" or "political correctness" as a ravenous mob of keyboard warriors destroying geek culture, but practically speaking, that doesn't really happen. We can criticize problematic elements in media all we want but it normally takes either something really bad or a long, long pattern of problems before a series or creator suffers any kind of actual consequences. I'd be more concerned about the writers fumbling the story by trying to pay lip service to justice movements without actually understanding the messages they're trying to support, but given how well they've tackled issues like prejudice in Zero-One and warmongering in Build, I'm not really worried about that either. Mostly, all I'm worried about is the tantrum sexist fanboys are gonna throw if we ever actually get a female main rider. |
Ah yes, Kamen Rider, the series that is not about anything political at all! No fighting Nazis as the basis for this series, or a long history of approaching current topical themes.
On the actual topic, I think its nice to see tokusatsu fans around. There’s a lot more of us than most people think. |
