I will look into uploading the... well, less TV-N version of Nexus, subbed by James Ballard of the defunct Ultraman-Nexus.com, so that if you want an alternative, you can have it. No guarantees on a streaming option.

Is there a difference in quality or is the TVN subs just laden with un-translated portions?

I don't need them streamed, I just want a good set of subs, and if there's a better alternative than TVN, I'm willing to go that route.

I think TV-Nihon's subtitles are actually really great. True, they don't translate everything, but it's usually things like the honorary titles of a person. I've found that people have been over-exaggerating TV-Nihon's untranslated portions a lot lately.

Maybe a little. But when you have Over Time subbing EVERYTHING and doing their best to localise and make everything make sense, TVN have no excuse for not translating anything.

This thread will not devolve into another subtitle debate, so we're clear, but I owe you guys a clarification. It has been a long time since I've seen either version of Ultraman Nexus, but I'm sure the U-N.com version doesn't lay into the honorifics. I also know that Mr. Ballard was definitely a critic of the TV-Nihon way of things, such as choosing to subtitle animated karaoke over the actual credits in the opening or reliance on flashiness.

Lastly and probably most importantly due to the literal darkness of many scenes in Nexus, his video was sourced from the R2 DVDs and not the episodes as they aired. No giant timecode in the upper left and higher-quality video are sweet indeed.

Tiga is a good spot for the Hesai ones. I have heard that for Meibius as well. For Showa,the original or Ultraseven are good choices.

The movie Ultraman The Next is a nifty stand alone film (sorta... It's tough to explain) which updates the classic Ultra premise.

And Ultraseven X is a very modern show, very dark and moody, with a big dash of 1984 thrown in.

I'll look into those four and start a journey into Ultraman then!

You can see all of the original Ultraman for free on Hulu.com... Its subbed but the subs are not that bad.

Reading up on YouTube Tiga is the only one completely disconnected from everything else, so I thought I'd start there. According to Wikipedia it is meant to be great as well.

That would take away my biggest reservation. I want the rest of you to see Black, but I'd be down for some Ultra.

Tiga is on KRDL as well! The DVDs are odd... Some are easy to find, others near impossible. Go figure!

DO IT. I almost wonder if we should do the N-Project the right way and officially start this LWW off with The Next instead of the first Nexus episodes. Nexus as a series isn't even 40 episodes long, and it makes a little more sense to watch The Next first. Den-O, your thoughts?

If you can handle the older series, it would make plenty of sense to start with Ultraman. Maybe Ultra Q if you were really so inclined, once the Shout! Factory DVD is out.

Tiga is another great place to start as it really hit off the Heisei era of Ultraman, killing the Japanese ratings while Kamen Rider was mostly hibernating. Nexus is another great introduction in itself but as I mentioned before is also a departure from the typical series. Max is my personal favorite series and is another standalone universe but regrettably is not fully subbed properly. Mebius was the first return to the Showa universe since Ultraman 80, and was a perfect jumping-on point for newbies and veterans alike. It's the popularity of Mebius that led to the Showa universe remaining in the limelight and brought us Ultraman Zero and Belial and the fantastic films that came out of that.

I am currently downloading the series myself because sadly, I didn't actually retain my own copies of the U-N Nexus episodes aside from the last one! The first three episodes are already done and the next three are minutes behind. I will find some place to upload for direct downloads and if I have a chance, explore streaming options.

If Nexus wins I know what prize I'm giving away this time ;)

I was just looking up info on Nexus and I remembered something that I'd stumbled upon a year or two ago.

This is the Ultraman series that has the actress who plays Jabi on Garo in it.
