You know the funny counter I've realized?
None of us have seen Grown-Ups 2 and we're instantly assuming it's bad. :p It's like trying to justify one extreme ("We owe it to Pacific Rim and mech movies and Toku as a whole to go and watch this movie! Just leave your brain at the door.") by providing another ("Grown-Ups 2 is going to be dumb, idiotic comedy that requires you to have never had a brain to begin with to enjoy.") |

Good show Matrix, good show. |

I'll say to things.
1. No one owes anything to see anything. I mean I fucking LOVED Pacific Rim, but I won't tell anyone they need to see it. No one needs to see anything. People can watch what they feel like, if it interests them. Now if Pacific Rim isn't a success, I'll be a pissed, yeah. But hey....I loved the movie. I'll buy it on DVD (probably Blu-Ray!) when it comes out. If there's an extended cut, I'd definitely get my hands on that too and I DEFINITELY want a sequel. Or at least an animated spin-off. But no one is required or obligated to see it. 2. As for the Grown Ups 2 thing? Yeah, you don't need to see the whole movie to know if something's awful or not. I mean...yeah don't judge a book by it's cover and all. But if the cover is a deer peeing into Adam Sandler's mouth do you really want to see what's inside? |

As for Grown Ups 2 being bad and people saying it will be,I agree with them whole heartedly. It's a bunch of comedians who havent had a successful solo movie in a long time,so it's time to make their group sequel again. Rottentomatoes has Pacific Rim right now at about a 75%,and all the reviews I agree with.It is cheesy and has a bunch of cliches (like you know exactly what will happen next),but the art style, the fight scenes, the funny parts and even the acting takes your mind off that and you start to just enjoy it for what it is,a kaiju monster battle movie. That being said,Grown Ups 2,which was said to be the movie to tank Pacific Rim and make it fail,is right now at 7%.That's the lowest I've ever seen on that site, and it gathers all the reviews from major newspapers and websites. |
It's been often said that it's cheesy and clichéd but that's no negative for me. Makes it even more fun.

Bottom line is, this thread is about people predicting Pacific Rim to fail, and if you (people in general) want more awesome giant robot vs monster movie, do yourself a favor and go see it in the theaters. I think that if this movie does half as well as The Avengers it will be pretty awesome

I actually made this thread to discuss Pacific Rim's marketing but it derailed fast :lol

A slow start, but I think it'll make enough money via word of mouth and international performance. |

I know the whole idea of Grown Ups 2 doing better is null and void.Grown Ups 2 will have a strong opening, sure.Once people see it though,I think they'll be sorely dissapointed. I honestly think Pacific Rim had decent marketing and advertisement.I keep hearing everyone say Grown Ups 2 was better advertised.I honestly disagree.I havent seen much,if any, advertisements for it. |
New data on ticket sales projects the weekend take at $50 million minimum. Good start, but not enough.
I'm seeing it again to give extra support. :D |

Pacific Rim has been getting advertisements and trailers in theaters for a while. Yet just this morning, my sister asked "Is it another Transformers movie?" *sigh* It got the hell advertised out of it. But people just didn't really get what it was meant to be. Whatever, I still plan to see it. Just need to find time... |

Tickets bought for about 12 of us tomorrow!!

"Where is my goddamn shoe?!" :D
|
Going to see this with my best friend today!
|
Here is a follow up article *waits for it not to be analysed in any critical sense and merely be fuel for hating on Variety*
|
Seems Rim is destined to join Dredd, Serenity, and Scott Pilgrim VS The World in the ranks of "awesome films that nobody saw."

From what I've heard from friends, the movie is great and turned out well. I'm not surprised that the opening sales may not be high, as advertising for this movie did not really pop up consistently until last month. Pretty late if you're trying to hype up a movie with a big budget.
|
I'll be seeing it tomorrow morning so I'm ready to be wowed. All my friends have really enjoyed it, most of them loved it. Really excited now.

Dredd was pretty sad because they did so well with such a small budget and I would have loved to see more. I think the Stallone version put a lot of people off that franchise for good. Also, Dredd opened with like 5 million or something and was never going to be a big draw outside the US. The real scary thing is that America is buying into "Grown Ups 2" and that will lead to garbage from Happy Madison. |
if any of you have actually seen grown ups you would know it was hilarious so why wouldnt they do a sequel? if it doesnt interest you than okay, you have ZERO grounds to comment if its good or bad. i think 2 looks pretty good. on the other hand pacific rim doesnt look like a theater movie, but is probably very rentable.

Maybe you don't like the movie, fine, although I personally think that's crazy because its the best comic book movie ever since X2, but having an opinion is fine, it's just I don't your reasons backed up by the movie proper. Also, the movie had excellent critical reception, I don't see why that has anything to do with nerds "accepting it" or whatever. It's just because it was a legitimately well done, fun movie all around with excellent characters and great action. Quote:
Anyway, on the actual topic, I will be really sad if this movie flops, but in the end it's not surprising. Here in Australia I have not see a single TV ad for the film, my knowledge of its existence was just by seeing someone mention the first trailer on a forum. Not to mention here in Australia on opening night and every night afterwards we only have 2 sessions in 3D and 2 in 2D, which to me, is very disappointing. It was a great film and I want to see it do well so badly, but they really slacked on the marketing for it. |

America, go sit in the corner and think about what you've done. Japan, please flood the international box office with your money so Guiliermo Del Toro can still work after this. |

Anything enjoyable about the characters came from the existing characters, Whedon nor any of the actors added anything to them. Not to mention that Whedon could never find any kind of balance for the heroes, making Hawkeye evil so 'the human ones' get a fight scene before Hulk and Thor make everyone else on the team not worth having, even Cap didn't really get a chance to shine, who always ordinarily would in the comics. Also the fact that Loki was taken down in a gag like an hour before the end of the movie, means I don't count him as a main villain. The in fighting with the Avengers was enjoyable and that is what the film should have been built around because as soon as they found their status quo the film was basically done...but then kept going for about another hour and a half, and it was all downhill from there... Also for the record the aggregate score of Avengers was around 6/10, which I guess proves the bullshit. |

-Black Widow stopped the portal -Iron Man destroyed the base of the Chitauri -Hawkeye guided all the other heroes throughout the final battle and was the real reason Loki was taken down (he knocked him off the chariot). They all had roles and a chance to shine. Quote:

The film was well received, critically. |

I'd go into finer details about how those scenes don't count like you think they do but I can't be bothered to go into this debate again. Yes I know the internet gargles on the films dick and great for you but that doesn't mean I have to like your opinion, see your opinion or agree with it. Which I don't. I'm just glad over the months of the films release more and more people have taken a step back from the film and been much more critical of its big flaws, that first month of mindless 'BEST FILM EV0R' was really annoying. Also my bad, still 6.9 is hardly 'the best comicbook movie ever'. |
