But on a serious note, I understand the apprehension about Lucky and his character. I'm honestly not too bothered by how they're portraying him so far, there's been worse in my opinion. The actor's definitely got a nice energy around him, though not as nice as Ryo Ryusei did as Daigo nor is the character's catchphrase as nice. I do have a problem with his motivation of becoming a Kyuranger being basically "wow that's cool i wanna join in", even though he does show that he wants to stop Jark Matter from controlling the universe when they talk to him about it. And I feel like they did a pretty good job of setting up the personalities of each of the Rangers while giving some surprising focus on Garu, since you'd think being the Red Ranger the first episode would be focused on him. But it does feel like they do cram a lot into the first episode, whatnot with introducing the first three initial Kyurangers plus Raptor, then Lucky and then Garu, and then KyurenOh (the fight was pretty kickass in my opinion). I have a feeling that we won't be seeing much of the individual Voyagers if they're only using CGI ones for the limbs. Hopefully that won't be the case. Overall, I feel like it's kind of a standard premiere episode of a Super Sentai series. Has a lot of good, has some bad, but as always there's a lot of potential. Can't wait for the second episode. |
So....after taking a break from sentai since ninninger literally have me burned out, I decided to watch the 1st episode of this, then I said I would go back to zyuohger since I stopped at episode 11. Anyway, to this episode, apparently this sentai took a lesson from ninniger because Holy Jupiter and Mars, did it feel like ninninger all over again. I'll admit that the premise is interesting. The fact that these "rangers" are going to different planets and recruiting members of their team is a great idea, but they are going WAY, WAY TO FAST with this. They already brought in 2 new members after an initial 3...and now they are gonna introduce at least 2 more next episode. This is stuff they need to do in like the mid to late 10's, not episode 2. Another thing, while watching the episode, I noticed the way their henshin sequence worked. My first reaction to their henshin sequence was like "What?" With the devices saying "Say The Change" and "Kyu Globe", etc., I literally felt like I was watching a Kamen Rider show rather than a sentai. Also, remember the ninninger remark? The characters aren't that great. Red is Takaharu 2.0, blue is blah, Hammy is an untolerable combination of Kagura and Fuuka (And I LOVE Kagura. Come at me!), Don't remember yellow's name cause he's bland like Nagi, and The black bull is the only one I like so far. In terms of a premiere episode, It honestly didn't impress me. The pacing was so bad that everything flew above my head. The writers need to learn to slow their episodes down, but not to slowly. All I ask for in a recent sentai is to have a well-paced series. We haven't had a truly well-paced series since Gokaiger (haven't seen Go-busters, Kyoryuger's pacing is all over the place, ToQger's is better, but still has problems, and Ninninger's is way to fast, also haven't finished Zyuohger).
|
I've come to a theory about this episode: The writers planned it out as a two parter but had to condense it into one so the full Mecha could be featured right out the gate.
|
KyuRenOh reminds me of old school mecha.
Lucky could be toned down. No, he should be toned down. Can't wait for TenbinGold! |
How does KyurenOh remind you of old school mecha?
I'm genuinely curious. |
Episode thoughts
Overall I'm cautiously excited. I haven't finished a Sentai series since Toqger and all the things that are being introduced here feel like things that will bring me back in provided they are executed well. |

Is it wrong that I got an almost Futurama vibe from this first episode? Lucky is Fry.

I said in my first post I was happy we weren't introducing everyone out of the gate, but thinking about I kind of wish they either DID just have everyone show up at once, already with their powers, which would have way more impact than hyping "NINE RANGERS! NINE RANGERS!" and then having the first episode give us a standard team of five, and then you can just get to their individual backstories in focus episodes after the premiere, leaving the premiere free to just establish the setting and have some cool action. OR, if you do want to go slow, actually go slow and have the first episode be something like "2 Kyurangers (I guess 4 if you REALLY need the robot that badly) show up to wherever and end up picking up Red while they're there". For the record, I still really enjoyed this episode, but the more I think about it, the more it seems like it was begging for a different script than it got. Quote:
Personally, while I sort of see it (assuming "old school" means 2000-2009ish), the big orbs on the limbs make Kyuren-Oh look too chubby and adorable to really seem like a throwback to me. |
I gotta say: I love the Jack Matter. This is what the Zangyaku empire should've been.
Overall, the show's off to a pretty good start though I think they should've saved Garu's introduction for later and focused on Lucky. Speaking of Lucky, I don't mind him. He seems like Takaharu if Takaharu had an indoor voice, but I can see his shtick getting old pretty fast. |
So I finally got around to watching this and, oh man, this was pretty good. A bit rushed, but honestly I expected as much. The action was awesome, suits are great, and so far I like all the characters. Yes, even Lucky. :p

The pilot for this series was really good. It reminds me a lot of Gokaiger and Ninninger if Ninninger was entertaining in any possible way. Like the seating gimmick is done here brilliantly, Lucky is much better than whatever his name was, and Garu fights in fuzzy blue pajamas. Fuzzy. Blue. Pajamas. Raptor is perfection, in fact I don't think I have a single complaint about any aspect of the show or cast this season. They introduced two new rangers to the team, the team itself, but nothing felt rushed. Just one thing... guys... that's not how space works. But I'll let him near-freezing to death and being healed by flaming rocks slide because I love you so damned much.

I've got a confession to make. The ED song is kind of a Guilty Pleasure for me. >_> <_< XD

it is a kind of awesome

I'm honestly not sure what to think about this first episode. On the one hand I love it because it's hilarious and over-the-top, but at the same time I have to echo the sentiment that it's a little too crazy at points. I like the characters and the action was fun, Garu was pretty interesting if a bit rushed, but... Lucky makes me nervous.
Again, he has the possibility for hilarity (see: out of nowhere wave), and the whole meteor shower thing I thought was brilliant, but every time something good/bad happens to him I can't help but think about the possibilities for later episodes. I mean, they literally gave him the power of Deus Ex Machina. Anything can happen from this point onwards, from getting him killed by triple lightning strike to giving him god-mode, and I don't think the writers are going to kill off a red ranger any time in the next decade. |
This is a clear example of needing to wait for all the character introduction episodes to finish and see what kind of structure it settles into.
|
Hammy is my favorite ranger so far, cause like she is the ultimate waifu~ but definitely liked the interaction between Lucky and Haru! This is definitely a series that might become part of my top 5!
|
I haven't watched a Super Sentai Series (from beginning to end) since Kyoryuger. Maybe this one will brake that vicious cycle. So far I'm liking what I see.

Time for Starscreamer to Rant....and Rave...
To start on the rant...yeah I want to slap Red...He is like Gentaro, with out any of the charm/cool factor. But he's the Red so I we gotta deal with it... Someone mentioned suede for a costume choice...ummm a Blue Sued dude anyone? Anyway I felt I missed points in the show, there is condensed and there is this, wow...I mean we didn't even get a stock footage of the monster growing! It was just...there! Lucky just being lucky...oh god I hope this doesn't keep up. I don't want every solution to just fall into his hands left and right. Now on to the good, and here is the thing, the good is AWESOME! I love the costume variety. Especially after Toquer, really showing some love. Getting a lot of the tropes from Gokaiger that I loved, an evil empire that seems to actually be an evil empire. Jark pulling an Emperor Palpatine presence...and the fleet. While we have one big bad guy, I think this will open up a ton for villain variety. The Mecha, I have never wanted toys so quickly! I really liked the idea of the partial combination, and each part having it's own attack. When we get the other members I bet the limbs will be switching out. Probably have split battles on the ground and in the mecha. I wonder if this will be like Gao Ranger on that aspect? I REALLY liked the individual cockpits in the combined mode and also liked the final attacks. Finally the battle field. I hope they keep up using various planets. I don't care if they borrow the sets from Ultraman, it is really putting a nice bit of style that I think Sentai has been missing for a bit. I am on board to see where this goes. I just hope it doesn't fizzle out being too shallow, especially with getting too lucky (something I never thought I would write) |
The one way I can think of that they can do with Lucky is just make him a guy with goes with the flow of where ever his luck takes him and less hyper.
|
Safe to say TVN will have this in a few more extra days given that it's a new series? Right?
|
Very impressive & flashy start for Kyuranger here. Since most of what I would say for the Episode was already said, I'll just say this:
When seeing Garu show up having a Kyutama, I was hoping that they'd do something interesting & unique where Red would actually be the LAST to recieve his Kyutama, and that it'd be 2-3 Episodes in when they finally get all 9 Rangers before he gets to finally morph. Oh well. |
^ I'm in agreement with this. I long for the days where the Sentai had to actually work to get their powers for longer than 10 minutes.
But....toyz! I also have to admit...I can't see the name Hammy without thinking about Hamtaro the series. Which means I will be consistently associating her character with a dirty gerbil. |
FINALLY
after 3 long years worth of sentai mediocre craps we get effort this is a mix of 80s space anime & kinda star wars sure there are cliches but i cant get enough of them i truly love those over the top segments |
There was effort?
Like, non-sarcasm here. Where was it? I desperately want to see. |
He must mean they put effort into the visuals

I thought it was cool, even if they did cram 2-3 potential episodes into 1. Excited to watch more.

I finally watched the first episode subbed and it was still enjoyable, but I'm really not sold on the red ranger right now. He reminds me way too much of Daigo. I'm really liking the green, yellow, and black rangers though. I also get a kick out of how much blacky (don't have their names memorized yet) shrinks down when he transforms. He seems like he would be a lot more imposing not in his ranger suit. Grr's ranger suit looks pretty awesome and is it just the lighting or does it have fur on it? Not a fan of the shark nose on yellow's helmet though.
The mech is okay, but at least it isn't a giant square. I do like individual cockpits. Lastly, I'm getting a very sith vibe from Jark Matter. The emperor is so a Sith Lord. :lol |
Yeah. Blue's suit uses a faux fur looking fabric (Don't know the material).

They really are trying to make this Star Wars and I am not mad at that at all. Quote:

I'm rather curious about how difficult Ookami Blue's suit is to maintain. Like, how easily does it get dirty and damaged, and how many different "Action" suits does he have in comparison to the others.
|
Mmmm, I don't think it would damage more easily than the spandex, but the dirtiness would definitely be an issue. I was actually looking for dust on his pants the entire time just because that occurred to me.

& the red first transformation & the ??? locked characters & race in the credit that they must search and fined and unlock in spaaaaace to complete the 9 sentai team[there's bound to be a 10th aka 6th evil/rival sentai that will join our heros later on......i think] its a mix of 80s/90s japanese video games and old school animes to build up hype for selling toys & the stupid over the top ooooh and aaaah [shock] segments......i cracked at the fast red VS blue scene looks like this sentai year is going to be interesting. |
I want to like this. First Sentai I really want to watch since Gokaiger. And there was a lot about it that I did. But it was by no means perfect.
Personal thing for me is I just cannot stop hearing Garu as Zoro. Throwing me off man. :lol But real issues were Lucky and pacing. Wow was that a fast episode. At least it didn't try to cram every single ranger in there, but still a lot happened. And meteor entrance aside (because yes that was awesome), Lucky did not entertain me. His personality was very grating. Hope he calms down some as the series progresses. I liked the rest of the characters. Some starting out with powers was cool and made for a smooth entrance for those without I feel. Don't really have to deal with everybody being lost and clueless. Liked Hammy a lot. And that first mecha combination came out of nowhere and was hilarious. I definitely want to watch more, which is something I haven't felt for any toku in a while. |
Okay, I finally watched it and... that was a Sentai show! It was silly and super OTT with just making damn sure the kids get the whole Lucky concept and, beyond the show concept (which has great potential), the story was just a mad rush of checklist ticking. With 48 to 50 episodes to play with, this seemed unnecessary, like, they couldn't have used three ep's to unfurl what they jammed in this one?
Am I the only one that felt like this watched like a twenty two minute trailer? I mean, it was action packed but the rest was just paper thin - just like a trailer. With a total of nine characters (not counting support and villains), I'm a bit worried as to how this show's going to go if what they gave Blue was what's going to pass as characterization. Well, it's just the first episode, I'll give it a tenner before I make up my mind. I voted "good" for the action, FX and concept. |
Quote:
The thought I kept having while watching it was "this is like if someone tried to edit Star Wars down to 20 minutes", which is both kind of a compliment (Star Wars is a great movie!), and very much an insult (slow the f*** down!). |
Just saw the pilot, not too bad, I do almost wish they could skip the megazord fight just so the characters could have a little more room to develop. Overall the battles were well done, characters were decent, and if I'm not mistaken is Champ seem like he was channeling Drax

Yes, explicitly Star Wars influenced. I'm A-OK with that. |
