Loving that Cyclone Joker. Can't complain.
|
Well I got some stickers.
I'm not sure I've shared this before but I customized my Nintendo Switch to match Kamen Rider Double: https://i.imgur.com/xL9GjNk.jpg and I recently got some random stickers from a yahoo auction lot so I put them inside the joycons. https://i.imgur.com/ebKYVAf.jpg It's okay that the Switch kickstand breaks off all the time, nobody's perfect. https://i.imgur.com/amDIbp2.jpg The little circle stickers look weird inside the joycons, but they've actually inspired me to try and print my own form-fitting stickers to match better. Looks like I have a new project this weekend! Anyone have some hi-resolution images of the cyclone and joker memories??? |
I recommend vinyl sticker paper if your printing at home. Real lifesaver for stickers and creates a really durable and clear sticker. But a decal would give cleaner and far more sramless results. Probably a print shop like staples could hook you up with both for really cheap.

I've been meaning to do this paint job for a long while. What better use of my holiday free time than painting my absolute favorite Kamen Rider merch collection!
https://i.imgur.com/bXwVlKI.jpg These are Converge figures, and they are my favorite because they are the smallest Kamen Rider figures available that still have the double-layer compound eye effect. Their paint applications are already astounding but I decided to add even more details- namely in the belts and any big missing places like the gloves. Total job for all 20 figures was 5 hours! https://i.imgur.com/iaBh7Lg.png I've highlighted all the parts that I've added. I also touched up some parts that had bad painting from the factory. https://i.imgur.com/dROx2bQ.png Look at that, Ryuki and Build are practically perfect, and I didn't have to add anything to them, while Ghost has just a tiny part on the belt which is largely preference. For reference, this is what they look like out of the box: https://i.imgur.com/lFz3lUR.jpg OOO, Wizard, and Drive had the greatest improvements. For Wizard, we can finally see the rings on his fingers. Zi-O is still missing some paint because I don't have a good match for his magenta highlights. Gaim was the trickiest doing the lines on his arms and legs. https://i.imgur.com/w0yaSFP.jpg I was actually so worried about messing up that I secured a second copy of Gaim. The absolute hardest thing was painting the tiny gold edge around the hand on the Wizardiver. I actually cut a Q-tip in half and used the edge of the paper stem! Now I need to decide if I want to detail up the secondaries and other Converge figures I have... |
Amazing work, as always! That Wizard looks gorgeous. I'd love to get a better look at him.
|
I guess Build was so perfect he didn't need any touch ups.
|
Those little touch ups add so much!
|
Okay I've taken some close-up images of each figure and put them in an album.
https://imgur.com/a/a0ojLQz These pictures make them bigger than they are in real life and I don't think they were intended to be viewed this closely! |
Soiya! Orange Arms! Hanamichi on stage!
https://i.imgur.com/7Up0jBn.jpg SO-DO Gaim has arrived! Of all the Heisei Riders I paint, I always look forward to Gaim the least. He is a beautiful rider but full of exquisite detail and lots of unique metallic parts. This time around however, Gaim's forearm and thigh details are not engraved into his mold and instead the figure takes advantage of stickers. And it is a fully loaded sticker sheet! https://i.imgur.com/4YVbQUK.jpg After the build was complete the stickers looked like this: https://i.imgur.com/wkPJ3mO.jpg https://i.imgur.com/5YtFaFT.jpg So from top to bottom: Gold paint on the back of the ankles, extra gold paint on the kneepads. Metallic black on the belt, Shine Silver on the belt details. The Sengoku driver was cut up to better fit on the mold. Yellow paint on the belt strap. Gold paint on the wrist cuffs and the front of the shoulders. Shine Silver on the chest armor detail parts. Metallic black on the upper part of the chest armor (replacing the stickers). Metallic Orange detail on the inside of the armor and helmet. Metallic Black under the helmet where it can be seen from the front. Metallic black on the "tubes" on the top of the armor. https://i.imgur.com/VhMGwLO.jpg I like painting SO-DO hands because you can keep them on the runner! I painted metallic black and silver along the edges of the weapons before putting the stickers on. Metallic green on the hilt of the Musou Saber. https://i.imgur.com/dPDYFnN.jpg https://i.imgur.com/1oR8Lp9.jpg SO-DO Gaim is beautiful figure and you can really see just how far the SO-DO line has come. We've now got torso articulation, extendable wrists, and hidden joints. Next up on the painting list: Figure Rise Standard Kamen Rider Decade! |
Genuinely thought this was the SHF when I clicked. Holy shit.
|
I finally realized why FRS Decade looked a little off. It's the black paint on the sides of the white parts (and inside of the shoulder pad ridges).
https://i.imgur.com/GltR1K5.jpg I've painted them here and I think it helps look more accurate to the show. The white parts of the armor are definitely a little too high. I bet they would actually look pretty good if they were sanded down a little more. |
Some more fun stuff:
I finally got around to putting some Gaia Memory stickers in my Switch https://i.imgur.com/QmUvZx4.jpg Kinda bothered by how they aren't mirrored so they had to be fixed into the joycons slightly different on each side making them misaligned. Oh well, they look great individually! Also printed out some stickers for SHF Geiz https://i.imgur.com/oeViNiP.jpg Not the best picture, but the stickers really improve the figure. Bandai really should've at least included stickers. I used clear sticker paper for that transparent effect. |
ShiShiLeo, do you have any recs for matte black paint, maybe a gundam marker in that color? I tried using a posca for my FRS Faiz kit but the paint eventually flaked off after moving the figure
|
The Gaia Memory Joycons are a genius idea!

It's my absolute pleasure to present my favorite Heisei Kamen Rider in SHODO-X Form. My my my how detailed they are. Painting wasn't as bad as I expected because the soft plastic takes the paint very well.
https://i.imgur.com/WJ3MkKp.jpg No doubt in my mind that the SHODO-X line is an artistic mini-figure line made by people with who truly love the source material. The quality in paint, articulation, and accessories makes SHODO feel like the best value in candy toys. First up is Kabuto in Rider Form. https://i.imgur.com/DtpTYJ3.jpg https://i.imgur.com/RuMaldA.jpg https://i.imgur.com/hNUSMEx.jpg Most of the paint is silver details on the feet and hands. Some black liner paint within the silver details and a little gold touch up on the zecter. Those little weapons are cast entirely in black. Fun to paint! (that was sarcasm) Interesting to note how the shoulder armor is done here. The Kabuto figures use soft plastic shoulder pads that are connected to the chest armor which allows the shoulder pads to move without the use and fuss of hinges. Next up lets look at Kamen Rider Super-1 https://i.imgur.com/Mkfkf1l.png https://i.imgur.com/aUEKCAa.jpg A beautiful and simple figure only requiring a little silver paint on the top of his shoulders. But those gloves, oh boy those gloves! I consider myself to have great eyesight, but I was tested here. The end result is really great though with tiny details that look fantastic. When I was younger, I had a Super-1 figure with changeable hands and my child self thought it was the neatest gimmick of all time. For the final piece, we have a truly magnificent figure. Hyper Kabuto! https://i.imgur.com/MLVKJl6.jpg https://i.imgur.com/Igb2Ahi.jpg Pictures simply don't do it justice. Despite thinking Kabuto's base suit is one of the best suit designs of all time, I'm not too fond on Hyper Kabuto, though I do love how it reminds me of B-Fighter's Blue Beet. https://i.imgur.com/vUwjncl.jpg The SHODO-X release has optional parts to enter Hyper Form Clock Up Mode which includes effect parts for the jets. Bandai did a wonderful job on the paint application, even though my particular figure had its share of mispaint. Still, I could not resist adding even more detail. I painted the right foot to match the show suit and sanded away parts of the left foot to better match the show. Red metallic paint was added to the thigh armor (perhaps the biggest omission), gold paint in the shoulder vents, and silver and black highlights throughout. Surprisingly, the Perfect Zecter had lots of detail to paint with each of the other Zecters being separate parts (aside from ZaBee's). https://i.imgur.com/3L1hhxe.jpg SHODO-X are quite impressive. I don't normally collect them, but as Kabuto is my favorite Heisei Rider, I decided to add the set to my collection. Hopefully it doesn't awaken the collector mentality in me. I'm perfectly fine with SO-DO... I think. Anyway my Kabuto collection grows every larger. I'll post an image with all my Kabuto stuff soon. Lastly I'll end with a fun picture I took to justify buying a Wonder Ride Book. https://i.imgur.com/SKiUXb4.jpg Kamen Rider Buster: Okay kids, time to gather around for the story of the strongest Kamen Rider of all time! |
Okay big question for the night, how do I properly thin paints? I know I put the paints on the pallete first then apply either the water, or medium and mix. I think with my first attempt I did too much of paint and thinner, because instead of using the brush to well brush the paint onto the pallet I poured from the paint bottle. I don't super know. What do you think?
|

Typically to thin (acrylic) paints you pour the paint into a tiny glass bottle, then pour thinner and stir it well with a metal rod. Thinning paints can change the pigment density and thus the actual color. I don't recommend using water to thin paints for stuff like figures or miniatures. You don't want to do small amounts of your controlled color onto a pallet just in case you run out or have to return to a part- it will be difficult to achieve the exact same color/consistency. I use tupperware! If you're painting a transformer, they have very strict tolerances and I recommend sanding down the protective layer, then maybe apply a primer, then painting. Also if you're painting over a large area, it will be very difficult to avoid brush strokes. Don't feel bad about that, many experienced painters paint for years without overcoming brush strokes. |
Quote:
Edit: Also Citadel paints. |
Okay Citadel paints will require very little additive to thin down to a good level.
Thinning is often recommended on small, highly detailed paint subjects. Areas that aren't that detailed don't need to be as thin. With models, I always recommend test painting on the sprue. For a complete figure, you should find an inconspicuous spot- like under the foot or something. Or better yet, have a figure you're willing to completely destroy in the name of learning! |

I have bought some gundam marker and used them to paint mostly sodo for now.
I only do some minor fix where sticker aren't there or to give more detail or being more accurate to the suit show. The gold and silver marker works really good (whatever the color plastic is) For other color, it depend on the color you apply and the color of the plastic. I wonder is there is anyway to prepare the plastic to use a gundam marker more effectively. I read about using paint primer, but it seems it always require to air brush and to cover all the figure to paint everything after that. I wonder if there is another way to do that where you could just put primer on the part you want to work on. Thanks for your help |
Gundam Markers don't really need primer. I would only use it if I were trying to paint a light color onto dark plastic.
If you're needing the paint to stick to the plastic better, I recommend using fine sandpaper to sand off the plastic finish (like 800 - 1000 grit). Some people also hand-paint primer. That is an option. Edit: Also if you use primer, you cannot paint with a Gundam marker directly, you must pump it out and use a brush. |
I tried to find a way to combine my hobbies and created this silly Kamen Rider keyboard.
https://i.imgur.com/2szpqeT.jpg https://i.imgur.com/s2m7Qsz.jpg I just used transparent sticker paper and put these little faces on blank keycaps. Just a little fun project. I may eventually try to make a soundboard using these keycaps. |

Kuuga is just #1 for first rider Double is #2 because D was taken by Den-O, so 2 for Double or the 2nd Heisei era. Kabuto beat Kiva to K so he goes to #9 as the 9th rider. Ghost is completely random and that side of the board was looking empty so there he went. Drive and Build were mostly random too, just balancing out the board. |

Build should go on the plus key. And, I know it would mean making a new sticker, but Drive should go on the Shift key I MEAN COME ON I do love this concept, though. Amazing work, as always! |

Is there also a similar set for the Ex-Aid gashats? Many thanks. |
Quote:
For Gashats I'd use this image https://www.deviantart.com/raidenzei...shat-624202794 I always use transparent sticker paper which isn't always an ideal fit for color, but if you use regular white sticker paper, you'll be able to see a white edge around the stickers. |

Yep, that looks pretty much like exactly what I do.
I can't wait to do the stickers for Grand Zi-O... that will be fun. |
How would one go about printing these? And if it requires something specific would I be able to order them from someone who can print them?
(I know there's SHF Upgrade and stuff but due to where they're based the shipping is insane) |
It's not hard or specialized at all.
A regular modern printer can do it just fine. Just make sure you get the right sticker paper. If you have an inkjet printer, get inkjet specific paper. The paper is thick so printers that can't do cardstock may struggle. One of the secrets I do is upload my image to Google photos and do the local print and pickup thing. They print standard photo size images on nice glossy cardstock for as low as 30 cents a print. You might get weird looks from the people working there though. This of course if for regular images that I glue, not stickers. |

Hey what type of paint works best for painting SODO stuff? I'd like to paint up some of the saber stuff because they suffer from no back paint.
|
Quote:
For example, I panel lined Buster's back "shell" and painted two sections on Slash's back that looks like they connect to the shoulder parts. https://i.imgur.com/bex9bAM.jpg |
Here's a quick visual painting guide on our beloved tertiary riders. Right-click and open in new tab to see the full size image.

A little update on the Kamen Rider keyboard I've been working on:
https://i.imgur.com/VcrHqV3.png So I've set up a macro pad. Each button plays the same sound that the Neo-Decadriver would play for that rider. Pressing the top left button will toggle the Final Form sound from the NDD (Zi-O will be the Grand Zi-O henshin jingle). What's cool is that all the sounds can overlap and make the craziest noise. Right now, there's no speaker built into it so it has to be connected to a computer to work properly. I still need to add labels to the side buttons and try to add light animations. It's really fun to randomly trigger henshin sounds while I'm working at my desk! |
