Don't get me wrong, I love the show. One of my all-time faves. I never really jibed with the show's aesthetic, though. |

Dangerous Zombie is one of the best suit designs in all of tokusatsu, change my mind. I also really liked Kamen Rider Paradox's designs.
Man...I miss Ex-Aid. Not only was it a great show, but it aired during one of the best periods of my life. |

My opinion on Ex-Aid overall has cooled a bit with time though. I really enjoyed watching it live, but I think I would put it on the lower end of the shows I liked a lot. To me, I felt like it was a show with a lot of small issues that added up over time. I do still really like it though. |

Now an unpopular thing to say is Muteki Gamer or whatever it's called is a legitimately good design. Which I don't agree with, I don't like that look. But I think lots of folks don't as well. So hearing someone praise that suit will surprise me. |
Hilariously, I was just watching a Youtuber who claims Hyper Muteki is his favorite design in all of Kamen Rider :lol

The one I'll take to the grave:
Kamen Rider Ghost is a perfectly enjoyable series with strong characters and a fine story despite the missteps it may have took (Other Makoto, Takeru constantly faking death, etc.) and I'll never really understand why Ghost is treated so poorly while Wizard, which is an objectively worse series, gets a pass. |
Quote:
Unlike Wizard which just left me going 'huh?' |
I feel the reason why Ghost gets more flak is the more apparent, up front issues, while Wizard is just far more flat and bland.
|
Wizard doesn't get much of a pass, per-se, I think we just see more people dissing Ghost because it's more recent, and because most people's sticking point of "boring" doesn't give them much ammo against Wizard in the same way you can make an easy joke about Takeru dying again.
For the record, and this probably *is* an unpopular opinion, neither series is anywhere near the travesty people pretend them to be. Ghost has a great cast and several really good arcs, and Wizard has one of my favourite Rider endgames and fantastic designs. Neither are perfect, of course, but there's still plenty to love. |

I hate Wizard in terms of the actual series. It's mostly boring, it's mostly uneventful, Haruto is extremely bland and the supporting cast outside of Beast are either uninteresting or extremely annoying. All that said...I can't fault the designs. I also can't fault the idea of entering a person's very being to purge them of self-destructive despair and how Phantoms are born from humans losing themselves and essentially dying to negative emotion. That's a really good concept. Wizard as a rider is really cool with a unique fighting style. Beast is a great secondary (even if his power-up form makes him really boring.) and despite how bleh Medusa was as a character, Phoenix and Gremlin were both very interesting. I also feel like Wizard falls into the "Better in everything but their own show" category cause every cameo role he's played in other projects has been leagues better, with Heisei Generations being one of, if not his best portrayal. Fundamentally, Ghost is the better series by a long-shot, but I can't let my dislike of Wizard blind me from when it does do something very well. |
I'm not sure it's my Wizard bias speaking since Haruto is my favorite Main Rider and Wizard is my fifth favorite Rider show, but I very much disagree that Ghost is a "fundamentally" better series.
Wizard archives almost everything it sets out to do and has very few actually missteps, like, bad writing, plot holes or things like this. Each character is written very well, in my opinion Wizard's cast is absolutely fantastic, the story, as simple as it admitadly is, is written in a way that it has almost no flaws beyond, Mayu could have gotten a bit more to do and similare things. And the two parters are great, memorable and interesting as well as explore the theme of Hope wonderfully. Simplicity isn't a flaw, it's just a show that appeals to a different audience than a show like Gaim. Comparing this to a show like Ghost, which, even admitted by fans, has a plethra of issues kinda feels wrong to me. |
Come to think of it, I did not have a huge problem with Wizard as much. Although the hype for Gaim did kinda kill my enthusiasm for it at the end a bit. I did like the show more I think after Beast and his mayo shenanigans kicked in and kept me laughing.

I think Wizard is pretty fun. It isn’t as mind bogglingly good as some shows but it’s quite entertaining. It helps that I actually like the cast.I even have some kind of weird Stockholm Syndrome thing going on where I like Shunpei. Don’t ask me why.

Ghost was my first full Kamen Rider series and I absolutely loved it. The first arc and the Necrom arc were both incredible. But a lot of the characters were pretty flat and there were some pretty pointless episodes towards the end.
My unpopular opinion: Lots of people bash Ghost for having too much filler and weak characters, but there's far less of both those things in Ghost than in most Sentai. At least Ghost had something going on for most of the series, but I've watched Sentai where it took half of the season for ANYTHING to happen. |
Been awhile, and I can't believe I didn't think of this one in my initial post.
The average Power Rangers season is far more entertaining than the average Sentai season. I know it's not AS MUCH of a hot take nowadays as it was about 7+ years ago when I first saw it, but I remember a ton of people telling me "Oh man, Zyuranger is so much better than MMPR! Once you see Sentai you'll throw PR in the trash!" And uh... needless to say that didn't happen. I don't hate Zyuranger by any means, but I remember reaching the end and going "Really? That's what all the hype is about?" Speaking of which, here's another to go along with it: Shout Factory's' Sentai subs are a godsend, especially compared to the subs I watched way back. Like, yeah, they have issues, but man, I'll take them over the subs I've seen of other older Sentai anyday. Hoping they end up subbing Fiveman and Turboranger someday, as I'm actually interested in watching those. I totally lost track of what Sentai they lasted subbed, actually. |
My stance on Wizard is that it's fine. I love Haruto - one of my favorite main Riders from the era. I like Mayu and the part where she didn't die. I think the plot had some really good ideas and Fueki's plan made for an interesting final act. I also think a lot of it misfired. Losing Koyomi's actress from full-time duty badly affected the main plot, Shunpei's antics hurt the overall tone, and the show really suffered from the Den-O structure officially getting overplayed. I liked what it was trying to do, but a lot of it fell flat for me.
Ghost (surprise, I have negative things to say about Ghost!) was much more intrinsically flawed. The show's pacing was a disaster (burned through the 99 days in 10 episodes and then had to hit the first reset button) and the plot really fell apart by the end (seriously, what the hell was the point of bringing in the twins from the net videos, especially when they didn't do anything?). Ignoring even it worst and most obnoxious element (Onari), the show had far bigger problems than just feeling repetitive and underwhelming. |
I am immune to 'having problems with Wizard's pacing' because I binged all 50+ episodes, the three movies, HBV and all net movies within the course of two and a half days. I was going through some stuff at the time, okay?
When I close my eyes, I can still hear Hi Hi HiHiHi. |

I could never get into Zyuranger, to be honest. I don't know what it is, but it just lacks something that keeps me from finishing it.
I know MMPR has the nostalgia and cheese factor that makes me enjoy it, but I just can't pin down why I can't get into Zyu. |
I appreciate that the past 2 Generations films (Reiwa 1st and Heisei Gen Forever) are trying to not just be disposable toku crossovers but attempt to be actual movies. I know I shouldn't expect a toku movie to be some avant garde masterpiece or anything, but it'd be nice for them to do something interesting outside of the always great stunts.
Forever looks the part with its cinematography and color grading and Reiwa almost has the plot down. Now if the next one could combine both aspects. |

Okay I know I've complained about Gaim before, but I think I finally pinned down exactly why I dislike it. It's because the characters are so locked into certain roles that they make decisions that don't actually make any sense, just because it's what their role requires. Kouta was always the tragic, self-sacrificing hero even when there was no need for that, so instead of a noble martyr he came off as an idiot with a death wish. Kaito was always the power-hungry rival, so instead of keeping his philosophy and motivation consistent, he just spouted some nonsense about strength and picked fights he had nothing to gain from. Micchy was always the traitor, so he betrayed people whenever the plot required him to, not when it actually made sense for him to do so (but at least for him, the story acknowledged that his betrayals ultimately were his undoing).
It was still an enjoyable enough story, I just feel like sometimes it was trying too hard. |
Quote:
Now, yes while it was a huge story development, there was no reason for Micchy to act all that freaked out. It was just there for shock value to bait the audience into wondering what it was he saw. |
I think this is probably an unpopular opinion.
The Hiden Zero One Driver gives the worst suits, with maybe like two exceptions. |

Another my unpopular opinion:
I personally really dislike the World Merging in Kamen Rider Build. I think the Reunification of Japan for Build Final Episode after Skywall is destroyed and Sento become a new Prime Minister is better for Build Final Episode than World Merging. Sometime, I think the World Merging in Build is the last minute idea. I also really dislike the Sento's friends memories are restored in Cross-Z Movie because that's actually revive his deceased friends. I know this is happened because character popularity but I think too many revived characters in recent years in Kamen Rider series and that's become overused and repeated. I really enjoyed Kamen Rider Build but I really dislike some of aspects in the Final Arc in this series. |
Kiwami Arms is the laziest suit in a series full of amazing ones. Each and every suit is at least creative, including the somewhat uniform Energy Riders, but Kiwami is just a silver shogun armor with a sticker on it.
I actually like Build Genius more, because it at least tried to tie up the series gimmick, even if it came out really ugly. |
I think Kiwami Arms looks better without fruit designs
But I still love Kiwami Arms design.... |

Speaking of final forms, I disagree with both sides of the TaJaDor/PuToTyra debate. I think TaJaDor isn't OOO's final form, but it or some other form that represented Eiji and Ankh uniting should have been the final form instead of PuToTyra.
|
I much preferred Ex-Aid to Gaim and Build, to be honest. The plot got a little convoluted, but nowhere near as eye rolling or head scratching, and things just felt more cohesive.
