Well there is one shot in particular that I recall, it's when Chise's scrolling through the feed on her phone. Talking about "Another rampaging Kaiju" and "It's time to change capital's if Tokyo's like this" in regards to the Kaiju attacks.
It seems like there is some concern there, but clearly that's not what the show wants to focus on at the moment. Given this is likely another computer world it could just be whatever created it made it to where "Yeah Kaiju appear but no one gets extremely worked over about it, people rebuild and just continue on with their lives" or something of that sort. |
It's also, like... a lot more real? I mean, look at all the crazy stuff that's happened in the last half decade alone; but for the most part while we've got strong initial reactions and perhaps decisions made, for the most part a lot of us just go about our lives as normal in the same day-to-day mundanity. It's an aspect of SSSS that I appreciate; that very true-to-life acceptance that day-to-day mundanity will inevitably hold interest more than everything insane going on. At some point you just get tired of it and sink back into your normal life, you know?
|
One person's chaos is another's normalcy.

So not all Kaiju are going to come out perfect and ready to control at first...I mean, all that one was doing was painting stuff and looking kind of pathetic. But I guess even a Kaiju like that can still be dangerous when it grows up.
Yomogi and Yume are having difficulty tracking down Kano's boyfriend, but Yomogi's not going to give up, and with that resolve he basically asks Yume out (although not as overtly as a confession), which she then reciprocates at the end. So cute. So apparently Yomogi's boss found a lot of money and asked Koyomi to run away with her with it when they were classmates...but Koyomi chickened out. I'm kind of wondering what happened afterwards because Yomogi's boss doesn't act like she's loaded, so where did all the money go and what happened to her afterwards? Apparently Gauma's out of practice when it comes to controlling Kaiju, which leads to a fun scene of everyone trying to do an "instance domination" of their own, although it seems like Yomogi might have the best potential of the team to control Kaiju, surprisingly enough. Kind of curious to see where that leads. The Eugenecists basically have a day off where they go play at Japanese Round One and enjoy a movie together. Onija and Mujina seem to be really getting along now. Also, classy of the guys to let Mujina use the one bed place when they were tired. So if I'm understanding correctly, Kaiju are born from the emotions of people but it's the Eugenecists popping up in this era that is causing them to appear? Chise acting about Kaiju feeding on emotions while her egg is transforming into a dragon thing...I don't see that ending well. It's probably for the best that Knight and Second don't mention they're technically Kaiju...although that does lead Knight to have an understanding of the dynamics of Kaiju and how complicated they can be. Although his secret method for finding Kaiju is to just look for them. I like Koyomi being more conscious of taking the fight away from the city where bystanders can get hurt. He's really maturing. I guess it's sometimes a big liability when your Mecha is reduced to the size of a toy, since it can be easily knocked away from you. So now apparently the Dynazenon components have resonated with Gridknight to the point where they can transform into weapons for him. Can all of them do that? Will we get the rest of the combinations in the next few episodes? Well, Yomogi was maybe this close to connecting with the Kaiju, and it seemed to regard him, but if it comes between saving Yume or destroying a Kaiju, there's no hesitation on what Yomogi will do. |
Knight and Anosillus are now in the OP. Guess they weren't just 1 episode guest appearances now. Also, Gauma mentions again the princess that he is looking for. I wonder who she is?
|
Yeah for anyone wondering if they might have been one and done, around Monday when we got the preview images for next week the visual on the sight includes Knight and Nidaime on the main poster now. So they're sticking around for the rest of this.
I gotta say I love it when the Kaiju Eugenecists are just sticking around and having fun. Admittedly it's definitely seeming like Sizumu is up to something given his railroading his colleagues into just having two days off. But still. Chise's orb now looks like a dragon skeleton, and a fun bit of everyone just doing "Instance Domination" leads to some heavy foreshadowing given that Yomogi was able to tap into that very briefly. Needless to say... stuff is going to drop soon. I remember seeing fanart of Gridknight holding Dyna Soldier like a cannon so needless to say I grinned when I saw that this was basically possible. Now I'm curious if the most recent Dynazenon toy release can do this? |
God, I'm too busy to write up something, but I liked this episode. I thought for sure Yomogi was going to shoot through the building and we'll have "that" kind of episode next week. Bit weird to see now people are panicking when a kaiju comes around.

So suppose Dyna Soldier becomes unavailable for whaever reasons and Grid Knight substitutes instead. I wonder if that will result in King Grid Knight.
|
The Kaiju Eugenicists are having fun on their day off, while Yomogi's going through what Haruki did during Ultraman Z. I just enjoy the Kaiju Eugenicists, they feel very normal compared to what we got with Akane and Alexis, and especially love how they were watching an Ultraman knockoff while all of this was going down.
Yomogi being foreshadowed to use the Instance Domination during that fun little scene shows that there may have definitely been a purpose to these characters getting picked to pilot Dynazenon. And Chise starting to slowly become more and more suspicious (seriously, she managed to get out of that chaos to warn Yomogi). I bet that Dragon she's got is going to turn into that statue we see in the opening. The Kaiju being born from emotions reminds me of Ultraman 80, as they were believed to be born from emotions in that one as well. Of course, Akane made Kaiju in Gridman with the mindset of removing people she didn't like, similar with Takeshi, so that might be what they're going for. Gridknight using Dyna Soldier as a bazooka was really cool, didn't the original Gridman use something similar, or am I just crazy? Anyway, weird Kaiju painting the town whatever, and Gauma taking responsibility made for an interesting episode. And might as well talk about Koyomi. I'm guessing he either simply chickened out, or he secretly called her out on that dough. The mystery deepens. And of course, seeing the updated opening helped me get a better look at those shots with the characters drawing out their Dynazenon pieces in front of: (Yomogi) The Kaiju Eugenicists, (Yume) her sister, (Koyomi) two guesses, either Yomogi's boss, or Chise, that one is harder to read out. Anyway, I'm growing increasingly worried about Yume's sister's "boyfreind" with what we got at the start of the episode. And what other ways can Gridknight utilize Dynazenon? |

Also I didn't notice this until browsing twitter but um... Gauma you should get your back checked, that purple discoloration is changing shape but also growing the more we see his bare back. Admittedly it's time for me to go buck wild with a theory in terms of where characters are going and just certain things I've noticed people point to in regards to the DX Dynazenon. So Theory: We're in for a bait and switch, we're all worried about Chise but I've started to wonder about sort of... her situation. Like, it's clear she wants to help out but feels like a bit of an outlier/third wheel so to speak when it comes to the group. Then it hit me after seeing the bead grow into a dragon skeleton alongside thinking about Yomogi. Yomogi's going to become a Kaiju Eugenecist or at least be opposed to our protagonists while keeping Dyna Soldier, maybe even transforming Dyna Soldier into a Kaiju, thus resulting in Dynazenon (Normal Ver.) being unavailable. In comes Chise via her new "kaiju" but it's different than the others. Given her desire to want to help out it ends up being more mechanical/dynazenon/grid-person in nature. It will have a singular mode, but it will also have two additional modes. A mode to combine with Gridknight and empower him, and a mode to where it allows for a smoother/cleaner link up between the soldier-less Dynazenon and Gridknight. |

So yes Gridknight toy to go with the DX Dynazenon. Hope it's more figma sized and can actually do stuff.

Which - isn't bad I guess? The little Gridman figure was the best part of the DX Gridman set for me. I just wonder if it’s going to be sold by itself or if they include some accessories? New partners for him to combine with? We should find out next week. @Topic: This week’s episode was interesting in the sense that monsters are really "born" from humans I guess; Yomogi has one of these pearls inside him. So the finale at the end will probably be either him turning into or giving birth to a monster? Also, the Diaclone cameo was neat. I guess that was possible due to Takara’s recent crossover with the Gridman universe. https://i.imgur.com/AoFFBSD.jpg |

Ooh a Gridknight figure with normal shoulders?!
I think I may pick this one up even if I don't get Dynazenon. He'd make a fine addition to my Ultra Shelf. |

They've been alluding to it for a while now, but we finally get a glimpse at what Chise's school experience was like...and it didn't look fun. It seemed like she might not have been outright bullied, as far as we can see, but she was definitely isolated and utterly alone in school, and she expressed herself through her art. And maybe gave herself a tattoo? That's what's she's covering up? And then she starts feeling isolated from the Dynazenon Team.
But then her Kaiju awakens and turns everything around. Goldburn is a mecha dragon like Kaiju, fitting for what turns out to be a support Kaiju for Dynazenon and Gridknight (just like Dyna Dragon was for Gridman), and he answers to Chise's heart so he fights for justice and protects her friends like she wants. Have to say, that turned out a lot better than I was expecting. Plus it finally gives Chise a place with the team, which is great. Yume asked Yomogi to go to the festival with her! She also kind of seemed bummed about him inviting the rest of the team to go. Even her best friend thinks Yomogi is practically her boyfriend at this point. Kano's old boyfriend shows up and tells the pair that, while he didn't see Kano getting bullied (not that it confirms she wasn't), he didn't think of her as the type who would kill herself. Which, I guess considering she might've been more open with him than she was with her own family given what we know, we might be able to take at face-value. But that doesn't really satisfy Yume and her grief over what happened with her sister and how, accident or otherwise, no one was able to save her. And the poor girl emotionally breaks down. I love how Yomogi prioritizes the Kaiju for once and then Gauma shoots him in the face to get his act together to go after his goals. Gauma is a real bro and understands how you don't just abandon your woman when she's in need. Yume is feeling like there was no point to her life or the fight with the Kaiju, but it let her really get to know Yomogi and find a group of friends she can rely on. When meet a guy who will tackle a dragon mecha to save you, you've made a good life choice. With Goldburn in tow, it's time for them to finally all combine into Super Dragon King Kaiser Gridknight! And everything about it is epic! The transformation sequence, it's design, it's utter power, even it's energy cape! It is the perfect combined final form for Dynazenon, Goldburn, and Gridknight. Well, now the Eugenecists are in a bit of a bind. The heroes are at their strongest and it seems like they're running out of Kaiju to use. I wonder what's their next move? I love how the team all come together and run to the festival, with Anti and Second in tow, and even missing the festival they still have fun with fireworks. Yume sure had the best reason for going home when she comes back looking stunning in a yukata, and it sure left an impact on Yomogi. Watching them make fireworks together was really sweet. Heck, even Anti and Second are doing it together, which is also really cute. |
So... I need someone to pick up the phone.

So this episode we get introduced to the best boy of the episode, Goldburn. He's a cute little gold dragon that keeps growing until he's about the size of Gridknight and Dynazenon. I enjoy him a lot, and it was cool to sorta see my confirmation on stuff about Chise, the fact that she's felt like a third wheel but also isolated in general. But instead of going the "Kaiju are bad" route, which it veers close to several times because of her mood throughout the episode, she manages to find her ground and Goldburn becomes a great ally in the end. Also it was brief, but I suppose the reason she hides her arm is because she has a tattoo? I also enjoyed the development in the Yume and Yomogi segments of the episode. It was honestly heartbreaking to see Yume break down like that. Sometimes, accidents happen and there is no real intent or such behind a person's death, especially given how Yume herself almost accidentally bit the dust during the later half. Of course though with Goldburn treated as an ally and both Dynazenon at full power they're able to do one of my favorite Super Robot/Brave tropes ever... combine into Super Dragon King Kaiser Gridknight! I got legit chills during this sequence and it really lends to the fact that I'm much more of a Mecha guy than an Ultraman guy in regards to aesthetics. Seriously though, it had an energy cape! I love energy cloths! I loved Ichi-Gata's energy scarf, and I love King Kaiser Gridknight's energy cape too! And we get a really cool action sequence to boot too! And now I'm really curious as to where we're going from here. Because it looks like we've finally sort of found and hit resolution on all of our normal cast members. Or at least, they're in better places than they were at the start of the series. Not to mention the Kaiju Eugenicists look to be on the ropes as they are running out of Kaiju, and they couldn't even control Goldburn due to him rejecting their Instance Domination. Oh right though, the ending with all of them doing their own little fireworks festival was cute for a non standard credits. |

Anywho, haven't been able to watch (used to during my lunch break but can't do that anymore) and my curiosity got the better of me so have read plenty of spoilers now... I don't think we're done with Chise's stuff yet, but am so glad to hear things don't turn out as horribly as I expected. |
Does anyone know the song that's playing while they first combine into Dynazenon? I know for a fact I've heard it before in this series and I'm 90% sure I heard the lyric version in Gridman but I can't find it on the soundtrack and I'm going crazy over here.

Wow is it just me or is this show absolutely amazing?
Perhaps I don't watch nearly enough anime these days, but it feels so different from everything else. I don't think I've ever seen slice of life melodrama and kaiju-mecha battles blend together so fluidly. But my favorite aspect of it all is the young love. We've been treated to all forms of it. We have Koyomi's regretful past love, yomogi's unrequited but respectful affection for Yume. Yume's familial love for her sister which shows how complicated those kind of relationship are, and Chise's love for her friends and senpai. We also get peeks into Gauma's repressed love for something he seems to be longing for (perhaps a woman in his past?) Yomogi thinks he likes Yume, but it's the wrong place and wrong time. Yume could very easily return his affections (and she has begun to do so), but her world is just not in the right place because of what happened to her sister. I often think about how timing is such an important part of a relationship. I'm reminded of a letter written by John Steinbeck to his son in 1958... Steinbeck's son wrote to his father that he fell in love with a girl and is too afraid to say it for fear of rejection. In reply, John writes “If it is right, it happens — The main thing is not to hurry. Nothing good gets away.” Full letter A boy like Yomogi could very easily be rash and judgmental towards the aloof Yume. If he were impatient, he would get angry and frustrated that their relationship isn't taking off or that he's been "wasting his time" with her. But with the time they've spent together he's come to see Yume as a complex human being with faults and concerns far beyond him. Yume, at least from Yomogi's perspective is a sort of Manic Pixie Dream Girl, but we actually see the opposite, and her aloofness and strange behavior actually stems from a traumatizing event. She has had many boys vie for her attention but only one has stuck around and actually tried to get to know her. Koyomi seems to dwell on the past- something very common in interpersonal relationships. The idea of "what if" can haunt you, but by nature it is unknowable. Acceptance of things as they are is a supreme Buddhist belief. Under this lens, regret is often viewed as a selfish attachment to something you were never owed. Understanding this is a path to enlightenment. I could go on for paragraphs about each character and the microcosms they represent, but I'm just happy they are here and not treacly or at the cost of incredible mecha scenes. This show is so good. |

Speaking about the episode some more though, can I just say I love the way Dynazenon/Kaiser Gridknight fights? Like there's brief moments of it just doing some cool choreography. Like this time they punch, the Kaiju catches their fist, so instead of punching again the kick so it loses its other hand to catch their foot. And then bam! A blast from their free hand right to the face! I really liked that part. |
So that building where the Kaiju Eugenicists play all day is a spoof on an actual franchisein Japan called ROUND1, a multiactivity arcade facility franchise that supposedly crams as much as they can in one building from arcade style video games to physical activities possible indoors such as bowling and pool tables, karaoke, etc.

Fighting GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLD!!!
Now that I have your attention. We've been blessed to another fantastic episode, and it was definitely one of the best. So we got some background on Chise, being alone and neglected in her school days (Props to Enchilada645 for calling it), and not having any place within the team. And now she has Goldburn, and I'm reminded of Gamera the Brave in a way. So the Dragon grew faster than we thought, and not the one resembling the one in the opening, but still cool! I'm now really lost on Kano's situation, unless the guy wasn't telling us the whole truth, but to get a reaction like that out of Yume was still something. I was almost worried she was going to suicide as well. But thanks to our best boy Gauma, who might see a bit of himself in Yomogi, for getting him to bring her back, it's all okay. I was hoping for a full on combination with Gridknight as soon as he appeared, and boy, did they not disappoint. Kaiser Gridknight was glorious, from his majestic theme, to his magnificent appearance, and energy cape, he absolutely stole the show. And of course, can't forget Goldburn, who's now officially part of the team. Looking forward to what combinations he could bring to the table. And to top it all off, there was a real feel good ending for this episode, and I loved it. I also now pieced together that one shot in the opening where Koyomi pulls out the Dyna Striker, opposing someone in a school uniform... Yep, I'm sure we can all guess that's his old crush, Yomogi's boss, I can't remember her name. Anyway, I'm guessing we might get his struggle next week, or at least very soon. |

I don't know if we'll get a definitive answer one way or another as to what happened to her (and obviously that's part of what's upsetting Yume), but I also saw another theory that like Yume did in this episode Kano may have dropped her ankh and reached to far to grab it and fell. Quote:

Hard to make words. I love Chise's background here, as well as her short development along with Goldburn. What a cute little (big) golden kaiju dragon. Isolated from the rest of the class probably because of her own volition or because her artistry set her too far from the other classmates, it's all so good. The drawing part especially, personally, since she makes me think of what might have been if I didn't go in and socialize lol.
The thing with Kano, I don't think the dude is completely lying, but also not really telling the whole truth. Maybe he didn't tell the whole truth since he didn't know, didn't care much (ow), or maybe he didn't want to disclose it with Yume since it'd hurt both parties. It certainly aroused a reaction from Yume since she's probably growing impatient or frustrated with this info hunt, every turn she gets to learning about her sister it's only revealed as some vague understanding, which is not unrealistic and very true. Only the person themselves know their situation. Love that Gauma is growing supportive of Yume and Yomogi, too. Also aaaaaaaa Yume in yukata! I LOVE! King Gridknight? Sorry, Kaiser Gridknight, I love it. I want model kit. |
This episode was fantastic. So much great character building, imagery and dialog.
But... I... actually really hate the new combination? I think it’s awful. I don’t really know why yet, but I despise it. Absolutely didn't work for me. Like, Goldburn is great, I like it. Gives Chise some more exposure and it was just a fun monster that does cool stuff. But then they combine and it all falls flat for me. Nothing about this combination works for me. Again, I can’t properly describe why, but as soon as I saw it I was like "Nope, I hate it". Maybe because Dynazenon by itself is already amazing and adding random armor, a freaking cape and somehow also cramming Gridknight in there feels like too much. Trying to improve perfection and failing miserably or something. I loved this episode, everything about it, but "Kaiser Gridknight" is terrible IMO. |
Quote:
Oh. I see. That is certainly tacky looking now. |
They might re-do the OP now to show Goldburn behind Chise now. They probably had it in shadow to hide Goldburn until his debut.
I was pretty sure a lot of people thought that Chise was the Akane of this season because of that. :D |

There's something just inherently beautiful about how Kaiser Gridknight's shoulder cannon is actually Gridknight holding the Dynamic Cannon up against the shoulder constantly. I'm not sure how to really put it into words other than that part of the sequence where that part of the combination is just Gridknight grabbing the gun and that's how it's locked into place? Beautiful.
|
I appreciate the subversion of the OP making us think the kaiju seed Chise picked up would lead to a threat near the series end only for it to be a final form component.
King Kaiser Gridknight looks super cool. The energy cape is so extra yet so appreciated. Peak Trigger design. |
I feel like an absolute idiot for only noticing this now but - the sole reason Goldburn has size changing powers is so they can shrink Gridknight, for him to fit into Dynazenon.
I was wondering how they would explain that the combined form isn't any taller, like how the gang had to make themselves smaller in Gridman, and as it turned out they did explain it, I just didn't get it at all. You literally see Gridknight shrinking in the combination sequence and I only got this now, I feel so dumb. |
I really hope we get a Dynazenon plush like the one we've seen held by Chise in a some of the promo pics.

You know this is from the same people behind Gridman when we finally get that one trippy episode of the main cast in a dream world. And you know it's going to be a big one when they skip the Opening.
So we end up with a Kaiju that completely consumes everyone, human and Kaiju Eugenicist alike, in their past regrets. A pretty vicious Kaiju, all things considered. Obviously Yume is stuck reliving life with her sister, and Kano was standoffish and kind of cold to her, but we get to see where she invited Yume to come to her recital. I don't know if we can take the Kaiju's world as an exact replica of reality, but it seems like Kano really didn't kill herself and (judging by Yume's flashback to her own fall) just probably tripped and fell while grabbing for the ankh. She didn't hate Yume, just like Yume didn't hate her, she was just envious of how happy and outgoing she saw Yume as being and wanted to be more like her, while Yume just wanted to be closer to her big sister and was sad she died. Futaba was good to her, but Kano just didn't want to bother him (or anyone) with her problems. It's really all kinds of sad that these two could never have this kind of conversation in reality, but it's nice that Yume was finally able to make peace with her sister and move on from her death. I love Anti princess carrying Second, and then at the end where she tries t ogive him something to eat. That was so adorable. Also, no surprise that Anti's past regret would take him back to his younger self and be with Akane. Koyomi flashes back to when Yomogi's boss offered to run away with him with all that money (and Yomogi is somehow able to recognize his boss from back when she was a teenager and didn't dye her hair) and this time actually does it. Although in the end it seems like it wasn't the money that mattered, it was probably counterfit anyways, but I guess it was just that sense of freedom that Yomogi's boss wanted? I love how Koyomi is about to probably say something about Yomogi's boss or their relationship and Yomogi is all like "let's go." Yomogi really owning up to being a protagonist in an anime, using his feelings for Yume and his desire to save his friends to break through the mental blocks of the Kaiju and save them. It was pretty epic. Gauma's flashback is back to when he was part of the Kaiju Eugenecists, and even wore their snazzy uniforms, and back when they seemed to be in Japan and had the attention of Gauma's princess. It all went wrong when the country (Japan?) wanted to get rid of the Eugenicists (I assume because of how dangerous they viewed the Kaiju) and Gauma had fallen in love with the princess and chose humanity over his fellow Eugenicists. And then he killed them all. Jeez, that story turned dark quick. So in the flashback we see Juuga without glasses, but did anyone else find it kind of weird we didn't really see much of Sizumu in the flashback? Like I think he was in one of the group shots but he never said anything or was shown prominently. When a Kaiju is too fast for Kaiser Gridknight to get a hold on, he'll just do a giant circular blade attack to give it nowhere to run. Yume has a beautiful singing voice. |
Man that plushy looks so great honestly, I'd love to just own one.
So onto today's episode, given well what I was reading about prior with which staff were on this particular episode and stuff, I figured we were in for a doozy. This is pretty much our parallel to SSSS.Gridman's Episode 9. From the start, everything just feels... off. I mean no OP theme for one, but like just the small nuances. Certain shots of the characters just feel way off than usual and give you this foreboding feeling. And then when we get the Kaiju summoned and everyone just starts vanishing mid-sentence or just between shots. I got chills purely because it reminded me of how everyone got dusted during Infinity War, but more sudden. I also love how they used this Kaiju as a vehicle to show us more of the characters pasts. We get to see more stuff from Yume, and as a result she gets her closure on the whole situation. We see a bit more from Koyomi and we also see Gauma's past. Given the short fight at the end, guess they decided to treat us to two different Kaiju designs even if briefly. I think the most interesting part is how Sizumu is completely out of focus in the flashbacks, we don't see him in the slightest after he vanishes aside from like a far away and a back shot. It really does make me wonder what's going on with him. I do like how Yomogi got to be the MvP here, just rushing straight forward to save all of his friends. It got me teary eyed how he kept bashing himself against a wall to get to Yume. Overall a very striking episode with a lot of really great visuals. Now I suppose the question is... what's next? What exactly is our finale going to be. Especially given the fact that it's been stated that Kaiju have started to dry up. I think the most interesting thing though about Dynazenon is, we haven't had a central antagonist in the slightest. And I feel the closest to that would be Sizumu given just... everything about him, his proactive nature, etc. I'm really curious where we're going in these like last two episodes. |
Regret is a full-on theme now.
It is something I think about all the time. Looking back at the decisions we've made in our lives, especially the tough ones, is irresistible. Saying yes to one thing often times means saying no to the thousand of other possibilities. We can dwell on what we think were mistakes and those consequences can paralyze us so much that we no longer take risks, try new things, or simply do nothing when we should. As someone who has made his fair share of mistakes in the past, ones I'm still contending with to this day, I know there is no sure-shot solution to constantly thinking "what if?". But there is one thing that worked for me. I met my current partner and we fell in love. The thing about love is that it forces you to look at the world outside of just yourself. When I fell in love with her I really no longer had any regrets in life because every decision I made ultimately led me to her. Meeting her doesn't change my past or suddenly redeem me of the mistakes I made and people I hurt, but it allowed me to accept the choices I made as mine. You cannot change your past, but you have complete control over how you feel about it in the present. I really connect with the characters in Dynazenon. They've been given the profound gift of seeing what life would have been like if they made a different choice. They get to experience the "what if" and ultimately find that it changes nothing. There are just so many things out of our control. I wonder if this means that Yomogi has a life of no regrets, or at least doesn't dwell on them. I wonder if he, like me, doesn't care because everything has led him to someone he loves. |
