(also: Northern Sky is such a great record, right? That whole era, up until about '93 with Euronymous's death, is just like some of the rawest and most visceral music ever and even though a lot of what I listen to is mostly third wave stuff like Leviathan and Mizmor now, this rawness of that true Norwegian kvlt still totally resonates with me even as an adult~~)

Aggretsuko is the greatest thing to have graced the history of Netflix, that's what it is.

It's a great show. Super relatable and easy to get through. I enjoyed it a lot.

I was never super into black metal, but I always appreciated the atmosphere of all that raw stuff. Actually, I don't really even enjoy the more modern, polished attempts at the genre, unless they cross over with other genres, like Enslaved, Triptykon, Deafheaven, etc.

But even then, 90% of what I listen to is either mid-2000s emo bands or Asian rock and pop.

(By the way, Enslaved were one of the best concerts I've ever been to, and I highly suggest seeing them should the opportunity present itself.)

If we're talking about Netflix original animations, I'm rather enjoying Scissor Seven lately.

Ah, well, there was that thing when Hunger came out where Fenriz was all like, "If you don't like the record, you're being Jewish", and Peaceville were all like, "wait, wait, they don't mean it like that, it's just slang", which, growing up in that time period, I can attest it was, then their next record was literally called Panzerfaust. People didn't like that. I never got the impression they meant it maliciously, they were just dumb kids, we were all dumb kids—if anything I think I caused more of a problem turning up for Shul every Saturday proclaiming myself to be queer, but I have friends who won't listen to Darkthrone because of this. I guess it's where you draw the line, and I wouldn't want to tell anyone where that should be as it's very personal. A lot of people tell me that Marduk aren't that bad, but I know that for me, that line is certainly there, and I don't want to deal with them so it would be wrong of me to tell them someone need to start listening to Darkthrone regardless.

Also, I'm literally awful and still own a Burzum shirt despite the fact that I am the last person our boy Varg would want listening to his music, haha.

I like a lot of modern takes on the genre. Literally the last concert I was at before lockdown was Alcest, and I think that black metal really works super well when combined with shoegaze. My true love is just pure hateful noise, but, you know, sometimes it's nice to listen to a band who are just like four guys in jeans or whatever, lol.

There's a beautiful black metal scene in Japan! I try and go out there once year, because it adds a little bit of spice to this silly little black metal fanzine I write, and there are some really amazing bands like Asunojokei, Ebola, and Hibari in Japan right now. Cataplexy, one of my favourite Japanese black metal bands, are like so authentic, when I first heard them I genuinely thought they were Norwegian, haha. There's also Coffins, who I think everyone should adore as they've been around forever and they blur the line so much between black metal-doom-death so much, and they're just so much fun every time I see them.

I've still never seen Enslaved, but they've been on my list for a while. One day maybe... whenever gigs actually happen again.

I must admit I feel really stupid having watched the trailer and not having seen the show for so long as I really, really related to the office worker/death growling in karaoke after-hours angle... that... that brings back some memories, hahaha.

hahah, I spent years getting the band confused with another black metal band, Satyricon. Even though I like Celtic Frost, I haven't listened to much of Fischer's work with Triptykon, but apparently the word is Greek for triptych... which I never knew.

No joke, Neo Yokio is my absolute favorite satire of both anime and teen dramas. I had a wonderful time watching both it and its sequel movie.

That's some high praise! Is really interesting how international these productions have become and how everyone has a hand in making them. If they're soliciting musicians to make these shows, I wish DC would stop producing those awful flash-animation looking cartoons they do and give the Young Animal books that Gerard Way presided over some proper nice looking adaptations.

Fun Trivia: G1 1980s Trypticon was voiced by the same actor who would eventually play Robert in Everybody Loves Raymond!

Oh, Triptykon are amazing. They're more of a doom metal band than black metal, but they bring in some good thrash and hardcore influences here and there. This is one of my favorites, which goes heavy on the doom.

Honestly, I always just viewed that along the same lines as when people my age would call things "retarded" back in high school. To me, that word was no different from saying "dumb" "silly" or "stupid." Of course, now that I'm older, I understand why it is different. But it's certainly a far cry from the rest of the scene and their celebration of...well, nazism.

I feel you on Burzum. I think his music is really quite special, but he's just such an awful person that I feel uncomfortable listening to it.

The only Japanese black metal band I'm aware of is Sigh, who embody everything I like about bands like Enslaved, but also that uniquely Japanese brand of weirdness that I enjoy. I've heard Coffins before, but they never really caught my interest much.

I've never personally seen him. I think maybe he was one of the toys that just didn't come out here? I remember once meeting an American boy who had a Shockwave toy and I was stunned because I'd only ever seen him in the cartoon and here was this purple of Holy Grail of a toy that just disrupted my entire understanding of the world.

This is very much how I feel. There is a... rich and terrible culture of using descriptors in a negative way without consideration; I spent a lot of my childhood referring to things as "gay" because the term was so prevalent, so divorced from anything that there was this sense that it was fine to use this language and it clearly wasn't. So, yeah, I agree basically, and I think we've all learnt, but also I can understand why sometimes some people might find it difficult to forgive, and I don't want to force my experiences on people because, again, there's that line and we all draw it in different places.

It's so difficult, right? There's only so much Death of the Author can do for you. It's difficult, because I still listen to those early albums, and I guess, in a way, I've found a certain peace with the fact that he's such a nerd that whilst I feel upset, I also can't help but laugh. Like that fantasy RPG he designed, where all the "fantasy Jews" have +1 to sneak bonus—like I can see what's happening, I can see the meaning, I can see this is a terrible representation of me, but also... what a joke. It's like, you made a racist Dungeons & Dragons, dude. It's hard not to laugh at.

Oh, I know Sigh, but only from splits with other bands. I should definitely listen to them more. I think Coffins have had a long history in which they've had many different line-ups and many different styles, but I can understand how that's not exactly eye-catching at first. I really have a soft spot for them, but I'm also totally biased. I think I'm going through a phase lately were I really like things to be really slow instead of really fast which was my default setting as a teen, and Coffins sort of manage to cater to both these approaches.

And that pic of Varg really sells the "he's actually just a huge nerd" aspect. I can just picture him sitting in a basement, going on 4chan and saying "well, ackschyully" and then going and hanging out in a friend's basement to pretend they're superior to others while rolling dice and calculating JUST how strong that wind really was.

I like Graveward and In Somniphobia a lot, but those are two albums where their more avante-garde and progressive tendencies outshine the black metal. I'm not as familiar with the early work, but I think Imaginary Sonicscape and Hail Horror Hail are considered the best of that era.

A friend of mine loves them, and she tried getting me into them so many times, but they just never really clicked with me.
