Kiwami, I can't keep being your mirror universe counterpart if our opinions on Ultraman are going to line up so much. :lol
I never minded Spark Dolls in Ginga, but I think it was pushing it keeping them around during X. The "clearly just a vinyl toy" look is more problematic in a show with an actual budget. Still, I have to admit, from a marketing perspective, they were genius. |
Ginga S Episode 02: Yup, I really like this. I'm glad I finally gave Ginga a chance.

Although... maybe you're just trying to invoke a false sense of security so you can strike while my guard is down? I won’t make it that easy, you moustache-wearing fiend! Quote:

I just got done finally watching the Geed movie and believe it or not, I really liked it. What a twist, right? :p
I'm not totally sure how I'd say it stacks up against other Ultra films, but of all the post-series movies we've been getting since Ginga S, it probably has the strongest story. There's a pretty well executed character arc for Riku here, even though a movie like this could've totally gotten away with being a shallow excuse for some fun action, and the writing overall is tight. Managing to make a climactic speech where everyone takes turns quoting Geed's catchphrases, in order, come off as natural is an especially impressive feat. In contrast, not a lot of the action stuck out to me, but it needs to be said that when the standards are set so high for Ultraman's production values to begin with, that's nothing to be ashamed of. The fight scenes still look utterly gorgeous, and with Sakamoto directing, you'd better believe there are some epic explosions in there. |
Finished Ultraman Ginga S. I liked it. But I already said that, right?
Anyways, instead of just saying how good everything was I want to point out one episode in particular: Episode 11, "The Tears of Gan-Q". Man what a fantastic piece of Toku. So absurd, so emotional, so awesome. I don’t want to spoil the fun for anyone who hasn’t watched this show yet but this one made me very happy. Bottom line: I'm glad I finally gave Ginga and Ginga S a chance, I liked them both. Now I will finish R/B - and man, the main protagonists taking their powers from Ginga and Taro makes a whole lot more sense already :lol |

But I can safely say all of those are worth watching. Since they aren’t too long, you can probably just causally watch through them. |
Yeah, all of the New Generation (Ginga onwards) isn't too bad. They're each about 25 episodes, and apart from Ginga before Ginga S (and probably Orb before R/B) could probably jump around all you want.
Speaking of which, I should really watch an older series; I've done everything Ginga forwards but somehow nothing before. |

What is the meaning behind "New Generation"? My earlier intent was to see which Ultra series are considered the "Best of the Best", not unlike a poll which notes fan-favorite Sentai or Riders. Not hard to find one of them! |
I'm no good at organizing lists myself but if FerrousMaelstrom wants to see an older show and TokuKnight89 wants to see top tier Ultraman, Mebius gets my vote in either case. It's 50 episodes of pure joy.

Older shows had the more usual 50-ish I think. Quote:

Well, the single best Ultraman show I've seen and the best of the New Generation so far is Geed IMO. The concept of the main hero being the son of Ultraman Belial, the living shadow of the land of light, is amazing in and of itself, but they top it with fantastic visuals, action and characters. But really, I think every New Generation show is very good. R/B is the weakest among them, it's still good but not as good, but the others? Ginga, Ginga S, X, Orb & Geed are all great. But Geed is the best in my book. |

Was Neo Ultra Q (2013) just a movie special? |

Ultra Q is basically Japan's equivalent of the Twilight Zone. Ultraman was developed as a spin-off to Ultra Q and became its own thing. Neo Ultra Q functions as a second season of sorts to Ultra Q. |
They almost always fill the gaps with those weird re-run shows. Some of them do get interesting characters in for narration but I don't know if anyone bothers to sub them as they're just recaps of movies and other shows.

I've taken an overview of the available Ultraman/Ultra Series on Crunchyroll and TOKU. This list focuses only on licensed streams (in so far as I know about). Here are the results.

Shame TOKU isn't officially available in my region. Though I may be able to get round that...

What I can't say anything about is the number of Ultraman/Ultra Series Movies, especially those which introduced Movie-Exclusive Ultra Heroes, not unlike Shin and ZO and J from the Kamen Rider Movies of the '90s!
|
So just noticed that few of the recent Ultras have been the children of Showa-era Ultras. Post-Taiga, Which Showa-era Ultraman's kid should be the next Ultraman? To keep it simple here are your picks:
Ultraman Ultraman Jack Ultraman Ace Ultraman Leo Ultraman 80 |
Quote:
Even after Leo and Tooru eventually move in with an older woman and her children, Tooru still very clearly looked up to him as an older brother figure. It'll be interesting to see how to show would handle Leo's relationship with his son in relation to the other Ultras |
Another Ultra Question: When was Ultraman Belial introduced?
Ultraman Zero might have been his first opponent (insofar as I can tell), but that isn't where he stopped, as Geed is Belial's offspring! |

He's also sort-of-not-quite appeared a few times; a copy of him in the Ginga S movie and his power was used as an Ultra Fusion Card by Orb and as a R/B crystal by Ruebe
|
Is there an online resource, that isn't a Wiki, which documents many of the Ultraman Kaiju throughout franchise history?
|
That's really what a wiki is for.

I think the movie was where I first saw Belial, it's about 10 years old? (I think)

Another Ultra Question(s):
- Is Zero: The Chronicles a better re-telling of Zero Movies? - When was the last time the Ultimate Force Zero seen? All I know is that they are modernized versions of other Tsuburaya characters (much like how Kamen Rider Movies have used alternate Toei Heroes as modern heroes/villains). |

I know Mebius' actor retired, but I'd love for him to come back and voice Mebius again and have an episode where Mebius trains a young Taiga (ala Zero training Raiga-Garo).
|
Should we have a movie adaptation of the franchise from Hollywood ?

Are Organizational Heads and politician characters in any Ultra Series a parody of anyone in particular or are they just meant to be seen as forceful and inept to help prove a point?
Occasionally, but not necessarily always, a fictional politician or some big-shot comes in and is either pushing the wrong agenda or portrayed as incompetent, ultimately inhibiting the main character and his friends in someway. Writers having fun, or writers trying to convey a message, or both? |

But ideally I want to see a Hollywood budget suitmation and fights, as unlikely as it is. Also, does anybody know if Ultraman Taiga will be simulcasted? Part of the reason I wasn't able to enjoy R/B so much is because they don't have official subs and Color Timer Subs have their priorities so we can't blame em for late subs. |
So the manga ULTRAMAN that was adapted into the Netflix anime recently portrays Leo and Astra as cat-eared assassins.

For those who can't watch the youtube upload of Taiga episode 1
