Which is great because I love Robbie as Ghost Rider. Quote:
Yes, that one. http://static2.comicvine.com/uploads...cacomics01.jpg |
So I finished the final disc to X-Men and hot damn, except for two to three episodes, they were down right dreadful. The two parter where Storm suffers from Stockholm Syndrome is by far the worst multipart episode of the entire series, but even that was no where near as bad as some of the episodes on this disc. The Jubilee story time episode was just so dumb and boring. On the other hand, The Fifth Horsemen was a decent episode even though we never saw Jubilee meet Caliban before, so her just knowing him out of the blue makes no sense. We also have no idea who he is or why he becomes the way he does by Cortez at all. The ending is kind of cool, but since this is the last appearance of Apocalypse ever in this universe, it becomes a tad meaningless.
The Captain America one is average. It's cool to see Wolverine and Cap working together, but that is about all the episode has going for it. Thankfully, the following episode that deals with Mr Sinister's origins more than make up for any of the episodes that came before it on the disc because this one is amazing. It is hands down one of the best episodes of the entire series. Not to mention it not featuring any X-Men was unheard of. Sadly, that episode is followed by one of the worst in the series. Now Rogue can suddenly touch people without them passing out? WHAT?! She touches Cannonball, she touches Gambit, she touches other people without any repercussions, which means the animators weren't even paying attention to what they were doing. LAZY!! The ending doesn't hold any meaning either with The Right given that they are never heard from again after this. Alternatively, Graduation Day is a phenomenal finale to a truly spectacular cartoon series. It feels rushed and they should have made this a multi-part episode, but it is an ending and one of the best ways they could have ended the show on. To be fair though, I never knew this was originally the series finale because Fox never advertised it as such. I never even knew the show was over until a local comic shop employee told me in the summer of 98 that GD was the series finale. Overall, this show has been a blast to revisit. There are episodes that I never want to sit through again, but as a whole, I will definitely be watching the vast majority of it again in the future. There were a few areas that didn't make sense when it came to the original X-Men team because there were flashback scenes that showed Angel was part of the team, even though that was contradicted way back in the first season when they met Warren for the very first time. Even Shard says, "He will one day join up with the X-Men," also stating he has never been part of the team before. My favorite episode of the series (counting all multiparters as one story) is probably The Dark Phoenix Saga, followed by The Phoenix Saga, Beyond Good and Evil, and Bloodlines. The worst episode is easily Longshot, with Hidden Agenda, Storm Front, and A Merry Morlock Christmas right behind it. It is a shame that the show lost a lot of its story driven elements during the third season, as that really sets it apart from other comic cartoons. Nevertheless, it was truly nice to revisit this show after a decade (if not longer). Well, now to try and look to see if X-Men Evolution was ever released on DVD. |

I just hope it has more plot than sex scenes like JJ did. You could cut out 3 episodes if you removed all of the sex scenes.

X-Men updates from me:
Omnibus read: I just finished the issues where they are beaten by Magneto again and this series continues to impress me. Even the filler issue with Warhawk was an enjoyable one. One of the things I am loving about this series and have been surprised at is how continuous the plots are. It makes me think of manga. Of course, it's funny though because I complain about how tired I am of there being no stand alone stories anymore in comics, as everything is written for the graphic novel, but here, I am loving this series because it is a continuous story. Either it's because I have the whole story right in front of me to read at one time or it's just because the writing is that damn good. Of course, it still does have those issues that feel like a stand alone moment, so that could also be why I don't mind it so much. On the other hand, the whole "six month old babies" concept was kind of dumb, like really dumb. That just doesn't make any sense to me and seems kind of goofy for comics from the late 70s, but whatever. I was also surprised to learn that Magneto has already constructed Asteroid M. I thought that was a 90s thing. Anyway, I can't wait to continue and because I just sold off some stuff I have ordered the next two Omnibuses because I've decided I want to read this entire run in order as far as I can even though I just read the Dark Phoenix and Days of Future Past stuff a month ago. X-Men Evolution stuff: So we just finished episode five of season 2 and this show is not as good as I remember. Well, scratch that, season 2 so far is not as good as I remember while the first season is just as mediocre as my memory serves me. I hate Spyke. I really hate Spyke. He takes the worst aspects of Morph and cranks them up to 500. The animation is nice though while the music is unfortunately pretty forgettable. I'm also not a fan of Megatron being Xavier nor Black Arachnia being Jean. Oh, and sometimes McNeil is great as Wolverine while other times he just doesn't seem to fit. Other than those, I really have no complaints on the voice acting. Well, except maybe for Havok because god dammit all I see when he speaks is Kira Yamato. That is all I have right now for my thoughts on Evolution. It does have some funny moments, especially when dealing with Kitty and Nightcrawler, but for the most part, it's kind of bland. |
Well I just completed the first Uncanny Omnibus and my god I am so impressed with this entire series right now. Chris and gang have provided some of the best comics I have ever read and I have read a ton of stuff. These may even be better than the best Spider-Man stories I have ever read, and a ton of DC stuff.
Nevertheless, that doesn't mean everything was perfect. I don't remember exactly where I last gave my insight on what I read, but there were some so-so things that occured in this batch. First, I loved that the X-Men got their asses handed to them by Magneto and never really came out on top despite stopping him for the time being. The Savage Land stuff with Garrock was a mixed bag. I enjoyed it, but they never bothered to explain who Sauron or Garrock were, so if I had no knowledge of them before (or the animated adaptation of this story), I would have been lost. As such, even though I enjoyed it, I have to nitpick the poor writing. The same goes for the story in Japan, sadly. I enjoyed it, but it was poorly paced and I have no idea who this Magnum guy was as I had never heard of him before. Also, who the hell is Colleen? She just appears, is suddenly in love with Cyclops, makes no mention of Jean, and they are going out with each other like nothing. But then she is never mentioned again the moment Cyke finds out Jean is still alive. I'm getting ahead of myself though. I'm not really a fan of Alpha Flight, but I would be lying if I said the two issues with them were bad. That was a really great way to introduce this team for the very first time as they made great rivals to the X-Men. Still trying to figure out why the government doesn't suddenly recognize Wolverine's resignation when they had no issue with it in Giant Sized though. The Murderworld arc was fantastic. I highly enjoyed that and felt like the writing finally started to get back on top, especially as we entered the Proteus story. Holy ****, that was dark and intense, especially coming off just recently watching the animated version of that story. And then of course, it ends with the first three issues of the Dark Phoenix Saga that I read last month, but to have them in better quality and bigger is wonderful. In fact, I can't see myself ever reading these stories again in normal comic book size. I do need to address the biggest poorly written story in this book though, and that was the Annual. Perez's art was great, but the rest of the story was pretty bad. Not as bad as the animated version of it where they gave Storm stockholm syndrome, but still bad enough compared to the rest of the stories. This random guy shows up, threatens to kill Jarvis because reasons, and then heads off to beat the crap out of the X-Men because he wants Storm. He teleports Storm to his world against her will but then the next time we see her, which is probably like an hour later, she is willing to sacrifice her life for this planet because... why? We don't see anything nor are told anything that makes her want to willingly help these people out. None of it makes any sense and the whole story is just bad. Then Arkon just suddenly has a compelte personality change in the last few pages, which goes against how he acted throughout the entire story and it sounds like he acted this way in his previous appearances. This story could have used another 20 pages to tell its story as it feels like an abridged version to it. The other thing that bothers me about the whole series is how much they belittled Phoenix in the middle of it. It's like they made her so powerful they had no idea what to do with her, so they had to dumb her down. Fortunately, the writing is so good that I can easily let it slide, but I did feel the need to mention it. Well that is it until the next volume arrives, which looks like it should be hopefully tomorrow. In the meantime, I guess I should read through my backlog of Rebirth comics. |
