The Interview
Fuck North Korea. Saw this on Christmas and finally gathered my thoughts about this movie. Its a pretty good movie. It has really funny quotable lines, but it does wear down a bit when the they get repeated over and over. Something I do wish though is that there is a minor mention of Dave Skylark's dad in the movie, and it's used as a connecting point between him and Un. I would have liked to have seen a flashback to a young Dave and his dad to further develop the character but the movie is fine as it is. Is it a dumb movie? hell yes. It involves drugs, sex, and immature body humor, so stay away if you're not a fan of that. |
Batman - This movie was my introduction to Batman when I was at the age of 7. As a child, it was also the first VHS tape I ever bought with my own movie and was a movie I watched religiously as a child. As an adult, it is still an incredible movie, it does justice to the comics, but is far from perfect. It has a lot of excellent atmosphere around it as Burton was able to perfectly capture the look and tone of Gotham City. The bat suit in this movie is hands down the best bat suit ever done in live action to this day. Keaton plays off an incredible Batman, but his Bruce takes a few big missteps. He has the look of Wayne down, but there are times when he just fumbles the role, especially when it comes to Vicki. I also do not like that he does not change his voice between Wayne and Batman. Jack Nicholson does an excellent job at playing Jack Torrence wearing the Joker's clothes, but like Keaton's Wayne, I don't full feel like Jack is Joker. He has the look, but something feels off about his personality. I do like that they kept to the origins established in the comics of him falling in the chemicals, but two of the movie's biggest downfalls is he being the one who killed Bruce's parents and his demise. I feel they both take a way from the movie immensely. Another misstep the movie has is with Gordon and Harvey, as they appear to be there just for the sake of being there rather than being a part of the universe Burton was creating. In fact, that is the only thing this movie is missing, giving us development of the other characters. I understand it is a Batman movie, but if no one else, Gordon is an intricate part of Batman's life. Here, you could just give him any name and it would change nothing because he adds nothing. The same goes for Dent. The Batmobile kicks all kinds of ass, and like the bat suit, it is still the best Batmobile on screen to date. Bassinger does a good job as Vicky even though she has the wrong hair color. Knox is pretty much pointless too. Finally though, Elfman's score is freaking fantastic. Easily the best Batman movie score to date. Overall, the movie's aging is a mixed bag. Some areas have aged quite well, others not so much. Nevertheless, it is an incredible movie that as I said gets the Batman character nearly right, has an extremely well done Gotham, and a phenomenal score. I am torn as to whether I give it an 8 or a 9/10.

Hobbit: Battle of Five Armies
This movie was one long ass fight scene with Smaug at one end, and Bilbo's return home at the end. The action was good and it was cool to see everyone come together to fight the orcs. While there is a lot being wrapped up in this movie, not much is going on in terms of the overall plot, just one big ass battle with sides having shifting goals. I have one major complaint about this movie though. The scene between Bilbo and Gandalf at the end where Gandalf knew Bilbo had the ring. The fuck? Why? WHY? WHYYYYYY? Seriosuly, why did they make Gandalf know and not do anything about it. This entire fucking trilogy they've taken care to have Bilbo be out of sight from everyone when putting on the ring and now he knows? Plus, doesn't that sort of changes Bilbo's characterization a bit. Granted, the ring causes people to do the my precious thing, but it was much more cognicent lying then I remember the ring influencing. |
Notorious - I have to be honest, I wasn't blown away by this one. It is a really good movie, and there are a lot of great moments in it, but it felt more like a romance rather than a Film Noir. Cary Grant is awesome though. I'm three for three in movies I have seen him in now. Of course, Claude Rains is also friggin phenomenal too. I give it a 7/10 stars.

Dr No - A pretty good start to a great franchise. The movie itself drags on quite a bit but it still good nonetheless. A 7/10.
Rebecca - The performances are nothing short of wonderful here, and the story is very well done, but I do feel the movie dragged on a little bit. That aside, for what was Hitchcock's first American film it is a brilliant one. I think my favorite scene is when they are watching the film of their honey moon due to how the light is used, especially when Maxim starts staring at his wife angrily. Overall, I give it an fantastic 8/10. |
Total self promotional plug here, and I do not feel ashamed for it. Batman review folks!

Spellbound - Unfortunately, I had a hard time really getting into this movie and I am not sure why. It just didn't grip me as much as the other Hitchcock movies have. I loved the dream sequence bit, and the last half hour of the movie was well done, but I was kind of bored. It isn't my least favorite Hitchcock movie, as that still goes to Saboteur and Family Plot, but it is a pretty weak movie overall. I give it a 6/10 stars.

Psycho Remake 1998 - This is without a doubt the absolute worst, most unnecessary, pointless remake I have ever seen in my life, and that is saying A LOT!! The only thing I learned from this movie is that Vince Vaughn can do a good imitation of Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates. Honestly, I don't get the purpose of this remake other than to spit over Hitchcock's vision. The movie added nothing original to the story. The actors were just reading their lines. I don't even know what the point of having Danny Elfman be there for when the entire soundtrack was just taken off of the original. Hell, they could have just had the actors in this movie lip sync to the original dialog. This was like watching a High School reenactment of Psycho. Everyone was completely miscast with William Macy being the absolute worst of the cast. The only actor that seemed to care was James Remar, but that was probably because he did not have to suffer through the movie for probably more than a day of shooting. Also, for being in the 90s, NOTHING even felt like the 90s. The dialog was still 60s dialog. The way everything was done was still 60s. For example, I'm quite certain cops in the 90s did not just look at the license and registration and compare it to their license plate And I'm sure Bates would have had a computer SOMEWHERE!! As I said, this is without a doubt the worst remake ever made, and maybe even the worst movie ever made. It has knocked Battlefield Earth out of my number one spot for that category.

Waltz with Bashir: Director Ari Folman takes us on a journey through 1982 Lebanon War in an effort to clear his memories, as he meets many of the people that defined his life during said time.
When one thinks documentaries it's hard not to imagine a bunch of people seated in front of a camera taking with the occasional dramatization, and this is not the exception, but a little detail here changes everything. It's animated. Aniamted documentaries are not something common, and somehow this decision makes a world of diffference, everything feels more striking, you get more caugth up in the tale, by shwoing us the history with an animated filter it ends up feeling more real. The narrative is interesting, the events are fascinating and the animation wraps up everything, making for one unforgettable flick. |
Highlander-
Pure 80s finery. Great action and an amazing soundtrack. Plot's a bit thin though. And the casting just baffles me. The title character is meant to be from the Scottish Highlands (duh) but is played by a French/Belgian immigrant. Meanwhile in a supporting role you have Sean Connery, ie the most Scottish human being who ever set foot in Hollywood playing an Egyptian pretending to be Spanish. 7/10. |
Sunset Boulevard - We went to see this tonight at the Alamo Drafthouse and it was a truly magnificent movie. Normally, over acting is not good, but here, it was done in such a down right incredible manner that I couldn't picture the movie without it. What is even more interesting is that everything they say Hollywood was like back then still seems to hold true to even this day. The characters were great even if they were not likable, but that was the point. The fact the movie is narrated by a dead man is even more impressive. However, that scene at the end on the staircase was just epic. That is two movies now I have watched in the last two weeks that have had an amazingly suspenseful ridden and wonderfully shot scene of people coming down the stairs. I loved how those on the case were all still until it was their moment to move. That was incredible. I think I am going to give this movie an excellent 9/10 stars.

From Russia with Love - This is my favorite James Bond movie, and it is easily one of the best movies in the entire franchise, if not the best. The music and action are great. It has excellent pacing and acting. Robert Shaw is just incredible as Grant. Plus, a portion of the movie takes place on a train, which also makes it amazing. I give it a 9/10 stars.

The Interview. My 10th time watching it.

Hitchcock - After finally seeing a ton of Hitchcock movies I figured it was time to finally check this one out. It was quite good. Anthony Hopkins seemed dead on as Hitchcock and I was surprised to not see him do any of his normal Anthony Hopkins quirks (such as saying "Yeeesssssssss"). In fact, except for Johanssen, I felt everyone was wonderful in their roles while she felt miscast. I do not know who I would have had play Leigh instead, so there might not have been a better choice, but something still felt off with her. Overall, I give the movie a nice 8/10 stars.

Two movies.
X-Men: Days of Future Past. This movie was a mix of cool and fucking stupid. I don't feel like posting an extended review on my thoughts or ideas concerning it, so I'll keep it brief. I understand what they were doing, but they executed it so dully that I just didn't feel it. It felt like a roller coaster, really, in terms of quality. And not enough Quicksilver. He was hilarious. 7/10 My Little Pony: Equestria Girls - Rainbow Rocks I finally got to see this legit (As in, without someone having a seizure while holding an iPhone in a theater). It was better than I initially thought now that everything didn't sound underwater and the music was a lot clearer. I found the normal EG to be just 'Okay', so I'm surprised how much fun I was having with this movie. Still, it clearly aims for the target demographic a lot harder than the show does, and it's difficult to get past that at times. Dazzlings are awesome, though. 8/10 |
Goldfinger - A fantastic movie with some awesome moments. I love the conversations between Bond and Goldfinger and it was nice to see a villain that was really going to kill Bond had it not been for his associates freaking out. My main issues come with the female characters in the movie as they were utterly useless and despite it all being a hoax with the gas to kill the army, those planes would have been shot down the moment they touched Knox's airspace. Nevertheless, I give it an 8/10.
|
Maleficent - I am so glad we borrowed it from the library rather than spend a dime on it because it sucked!! First off, the movie should have been about Maleficent and only Maleficent. There should have been no Aurora in it. The movie should have ended where the Sleeping Beauty story begins. Secondly, that leads into my next complaint, the movement of time. The pacing was down right terrible. Time moved so quickly that you could never even enjoy a moment of it because it was gone in an instant. Stephan's betrayal just came out of the blue with no rhyme or reason for it. We should have had a good hour spent before he cut off her wings, not 10 minutes. The CGI was awful, especially on the pixies. Good god their heads were huge. Another negative was its acting. Except for Jolie, the acting was atrocious, especially Stephan's, whose acting was down right laughable because of how bad it was. That scene when he is stabs the sword into the table was hilarious. It is unfortunate at how bad this movie was because there were some really great moments throughout the movie where it really shined, especially when Maleficent turned the Moar into darkness. That was awesome. Like I said, the movie should have been about her decent into madness rather than spend 5 minutes turning her evil and the remaining 70 redeeming her. Another positive was its music and that was well done. Overall, I have no choice but to give this turd a 4/10 stars. Let's hope Disney does Cinderella better and actually give the movie time to develop something.
|
The Kingsmen - We got to see an advanced screening of The Kingsmen tonight and the trailers were completely misleading on this movie. This movie was utterly fantastic. It had a ton of great one liners mixed with some pretty damn stylish action scenes. All of the actors were phenomenal in their roles with both Colin Firth and Samuel L Jackson being at their A game here. The story was interesting with some nice nods to old school spy movies along with a ton of comedy that did not feel forced in. There is not too much more I can say about the movie without giving it away other than this is one of the best Not James Bond James Bond movies movies all time. I give it an 8/10 and it more than makes up for the lackluster movies that have plagued theaters these last few weeks.

We did a Robocop double feature with the original and remake as I have seen none of them before.
Original - It was a pretty good movie. I loved the build up to Alex becoming a machine and everything that came after. I liked that they declared him dead and tried to keep him memories erased in order to have a perfect machine. Watching him naturally return to his human thoughts felt natural and was well done. I also liked that the movie was just just one giant action scene after another and they paced themselves. There were quite a few of awesome actors to be found here too. Finally, they did a nice job of making Detroit look run down, dirty, and ridden with crime. Overall, I give the movie a 7/10 stars. Remake - I have to be honest, this was actually not that bad. I liked that they tried to do their own thing with it rather than making it a shot for shot remake. The only problem is that it came off as generic and unoriginal. I have seen this plot done in the past and done better. There was too much action in it and I did not feel anything for Murphy. Also, Detroit was way too clean and did not feel like they were in need of a robot police force. Another negative is I felt like I was watching a movie set in the Metal Gear Solid 4 world because the Ed209s felt too much like the Gekkos rather than ED209s. Finally, the black was just ugly and this is coming from somewhere who wears black all of the time. There was no need for it other than to make it edgy. Still, as I said, I give it a lot of credit for doing its own thing, but I do miss the made up commercials the original had, especially Nuke'Em. Overall, I give it a 6/10. |
The Star Wars Saga (1977 - 2005):
Wow. All it took was a rewatch of the six movies to rekindle my love for Star Wars. While the first two movies (in chronological order (Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones)) weren't that great, the other four movies were just amazing! Personally, my favorite out of the six is 2005's Revenge of the Sith, with 1980's The Empire Strikes Back in second place. The other two, Star Wars and Return of the Jedi, were ok in my opinion. Star Wars (A New Hope) was somewhat predictable, while Return of the Jedi seemed to drag on a lot. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace - 5/10 Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones - 4/10 Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - 8/10 Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope - 6/10 Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back - 7.8/10 Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi - 7/10 |
What makes Empire a 7.8? That just seems like an odd score. And really, a 6 for ANH?

The Town That Dreaded Sundown (1976)
This was a very great movie. It was a great little crime drama that was shot very well, had some good fast pacing to it, and was rather suspenseful at times. It has some hokey moments that kinda take you out of it, but overall it's great. I highly recommend it. |
Finally found the time to go and watch Birdman. I have to let that one sink in a bit before I can really say alot about it but I absolutely loved it. This movie does so much with so little its incredible. It talks about love, to be loved, identity, what it means to be an actor, how we see the industry, how the industry sees us, how it sees itself and much much more. It was absolutely exciting to see the journey of a broken man trying to figure out his place in this world and what he wants out of life. The acting in this movie was incredible and I cant wait for the Blu-Ray to come out so I can watch it again in english to really see Michael Keatons incredible performance in all of its glory.
Cant recomend this movie enough. |

You Only Live Twice - Another great Bond movie that also features two actresses from a few Godzilla movies. I love Donald Pleasance as Blofeld even though he really didn't do much here. On the other hand, I never thought about this movie being racist in the slightest until two of my friends said as such. Either I just don't care enough or they are way too sensitive, but whatever. I give it a 7/10 stars.
Ebirah Horror of the Deep - Finally watched this BD and wow, the video quality was amazing. Too bad they can not fix the hissing sound in the audio whenever the Fairy twins sing though. Anyway, I'll give more in my review, which I hope to have up by the middle of the week. |
The Wolf of Wall Street
I really enjoyed this movie alot. The three hour run time went by so incredibly fast and I never got bored at any point in this movie. Dicaprios performance was absolutely breathtaking and engaging to watch. What I really loved about this movie is that it never judges the actions of Jordan Belfort. It just presents the story as is but leaves it to the viewer to decide what to make of it. |
Vertigo - Got to see it on the big screen yesterday. Amazing. 9/10
|
Wow, there was nothing like finally getting to see the original Transformers movie from 1986 in theaters for the first time. The Alamo Drafthouse had an excellent 35mm print of it and it looked fantastic. Easily one of the best movies based on a cartoon series ever. 8/10.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service - This movie is just awesome. It has great pacing, tries to add some new ideas to the formula, and it has amazing set pieces and action scenes. Not to mention the powerful tragic ending. The only downside is that Lazenby tries to just copy Connery's performance as Bond instead of trying to put his own persona into the character. I give it a wonderful 9/10. |

Diamonds are Forever - By far Connery's weakest movie with some of the worst action scenes in the franchise this far. Its saving graces are Wint and Kidd and the fact that it completes the Blofeld storyline. For that alone, I give it a 6.5/10.
