They're employers that provide room and board.

She works for them and lives upstairs of their bakery.

Oh, okay now that explains it. I thought she was their daughter or niece or... something like that.

Nah. You get to see Pinkie's real family in Season 1, Episode 23, Cutie Mark Chronicles.

Hence my confusion as to why she lives with the Cakes.

Well...she IS an adult.

Pinkie's apparently Amish family that people assume are named after Pac-Man Ghosts.

That or she's an orphaned Gypsy who's hometown was engulfed by fire.

Okay just finished A Friend in Deed. Yet another good episode with some great moments for Pinkie Pie and probably one of the best "characters of the day" with CDD. Also that one clip of Rainbow Dash reading one of the Daring Doo books was a nice touch, really help to show her growth as a character.

On that note Rainbow Dash definitely is the character that has grown the most over the course of the series thus far and I appreciate the fact that the animators (and to a lesser extent the writers) took the time in the episode to further reinforce it. It's a small touch, but an effective one.

Anyway, Dash certainly does experience growth. You can see the fruits of her development in Hurricane Fluttershy (Also the episode that features the two worst beings ever put to animation).
